I can't get exim to work with pam - it justs issues a 535

EdwardIII
hey, i've got eximon working over ssh/x11 forwarding: http://www.madduck.co.uk/eximon.png
however but it seems to be devoid of the features i've read e.g. being able to freeze and unfreeze mail in the queue
any clues? i'm running exim-mon-4.63-3.el5 from the standard centos repo
artur
Hi, how to count number of messages per user? Have you some scripts for it?
Daviey
artur: ls -laR | wc -l
artur
Uhm, it should be done with script and mainlog parse maybe
I want have, number of messages sent/receved per user, or top10 of senders
phx
artur, you can have continue= lines with some logging, and there you can make your stats
currently i'm using this to log rejected mails to a database
artur
phx, can you show me an example?
phx
sure
this one is from an ACL:
continue = ${lookup pgsql{SELECT rejected('${quote_pgsql:${lc:$sender_address}}',\
'', NULL, '$sender_host_address', 'domaindenied', '$acl_c_helostatus')}}
artur, check the docs at exim.org for this directive
artur
thanks

hello. i'm new to mailservers and i'm running debian lenny. i cannot get my emails to reach my server without rejection error.
i have port 25 open, but i think i may not really understand the configuration and the hostnames... i'm running virtual hosting.
phx
check your logs, and try sending the mail while exim is in debug mode, and examine the debug output
t_pan
phx, i will try that.
another thing: starting and restarting exim is REALLY slow and sometimes hangs altogether... is this normal?
phx
no
also, debug log
t_pan
okay.
phx
maybe it has something to do with your dns resolver
t_pan
this is what i have done: i have 3 web addy's running to one IP resolved via Apache's virtual hosting configuration.
thats it... i have been able to get by without a local DNS
according to the docs on exim, it looks as though it should collect for multiple FQDN's as well.
phx
SMTP relies on a working NS
t_pan
but i do not have multiple PHYSICAL servers.
phx, i'm guess i need to understand how to run a DNS that simply points to its own physical address?
im sorry im so confused... this is new to me.
phx
well, you also have to understand how nameservers and domains are working
t_pan
my webpage scheme works.
phx
anyway, debug mode is your friend :)
t_pan
okay
artur
phx, How to write something to a file with continue directive with ACL? Where can i find documentation about these 'actions' on exim?
phx
artur, i don't know that, never done that. check the manual on file ops
t_pan
okay, email is not even touching exim... so i guess i need to start with the main config...
when i setup my machine, i just used an arbitrary hostname. does this hostname need to tie to some actual FQDN?
sorry.... *DOMAIN name
exploring my options, thanks.
EdwardIII
hey any of you badboys use eximon? i'm running it using XForwarding but it looks way deficient of features: www.madduck.co.uk/eximon.png
djce
EdwardIII: not used it. What sort of features are you after?
EdwardIII
djce: fairly comprehensive real time monitoring of what's going on usage wise on exim, e.g. mail per second/min etc
djce
Depends what you need - historical graphs, "right now" snapshots, queue?
For example, if you're interested in deliveries being made out of exim: tail -f main.log | grep ' [-=]> ' would be a start.
For queue stats and historical data I wrote my own scripts for those sorts of things. Not sure what else is available, but happy to share. Don't know if it would suit you / your needs though.

EdwardIII
djce: real time, right now, not really historical
mainly mails per second/minute overall
however i'd be happy to take a look at your script, historical records are not what i'm looking for today but who knows when they may come in handy?
djce
The script for that exposes various counters via SNMP, so that you can use (e.g.) mrtg to collect/graph the data.
Warning: contains sharp edges. No support :-)
Knowledge of snmpd/mrtg required.
Interested?
henk
o_O
EdwardIII
yeah thanks, although tbh i don't have any experience with mrtg it's something i probably should implement heh
henk
i wonder what your job is when you can stare at exim realtime graphs...
djce
(Action) needs an "exim main log to green Matrix glyphs" converter
EdwardIII
henk: smtp admin, perhaps?
henk
EdwardIII: i don't know, is it?
talin
hello. i have an exim server.. and some user claims that my server blocks his e-mail, because in the log it says "We do not authorize the use of this system to transport unsolicited and/or bulk e-mail"
but that's probably just a "welcome message" or something?
EdwardIII
henk: i don't know, i've never had time to sit around looking at graphs
henk
EdwardIII: then why do you want to start now? o_O
talin: perhaps. can you give more info?
EdwardIII
henk: that's actually not what i'm trying to do. i want to get real-time monitoring, my main objective is to see mail per sec/min
talin
henk: i'm not sure what kind of information to provide
EdwardIII
i got eximon working over X11 forwarding but i think rhel must package an old version or something as it doesn't seem to have th efeatures most docs refer to (e.g. click on a mail to and select freeze/unfreeze)
henk
talin: for example the verbatim log line or (on your side) the exim -bh output for your users' hosts.
EdwardIII: hm, i don't really see what that'd be good for apart from keeping me from work, but if you need it, good luck :) i've never used it so i can't help. sorry.
EdwardIII
henk: i'm trying to identify where the bottleneck is on a paticular server so i can massage it or delegate it to another machine
djce
Is there are particular problem? If so, what's the symptom?
EdwardIII
djce: high load and slow queue processing. free -m and vmstat seem to agree nothing bad is happening with swap so i don't think memory is an issue. i want to see if an unusual high quantity of emails is occuring when the system resources occur
i think it's down to i/o based on what i'm seeing in sar, so i want to identify which app needs tweaking/moving, but i'd also like to get an idea of what's happening with the mail real-time
sound reasonable or you think i'm some sort of crazy person?
djce
exiwhat might be a good start perhaps.
Failing that... I'd suggest a simple script to "tail -f" the main log for (say) 5 seconds, and count the number of lines matching various patterns. e.g. "'TCP/IP connection count'", "<=", "[=-]>", that sort of thing.
EdwardIII
ye i've used exiwhat, exiqsumm and other stuff in the past, perhaps a script that watches exiwhat might be a bit quicker to throw together
amimusa
hello, I am trying to set up mail server in my new debian5 box. I have dynamic ip, so I am trying to set gmail as smarthost. I follow this guide: http://blog.jorgeivanmeza.com/2009/07/utilizar-gmail-como-smarthost-desde-linux-debian-5/ but I encountered errors not commented there. the error I get is: http://pastebin.com/cR7qQE9r
i am using exim4 as MTA
anybodu around could help please ?
thanks in advance
henk
amimusa: what's the problem?
amimusa
http://pastebin.com/cR7qQE9r
henk
amimusa: what's your problem with that error?
amimusa
it should be authenticated or I am doing the process wrong
henk
very probably.
amimusa
could you help me ?
henk
with what?
amimusa
i have set the passwd.client file
i'd like to use gmail as smarthost for my email server
henk
are you sure your gmail account can do that? are you sure you are using the correct port? are you sure you are using the correct username and password? which authentication mechanisms are supported by gmail? do you use the correct one?
amimusa
here i poasted all i kwno now: http://pastebin.com/mEdLa40M
pasted, sorry
i think gmail can do this, at least there are info regarding on that
the port should be this one, I got it from a IT doc file in internet
username/password, works... i log in through the webmail
now i am watching here: http://typo.submonkey.net/articles/2005/9/9/use-gmail-as-a-smart-host
henk
hm looks fine to me...
amimusa
i didn't have the pop enabled on gmail, i am going to try with this
from http://typo.submonkey.net/articles/2005/9/9/use-gmail-as-a-smart-host --> Next, add a domain list to your exim configuration:
where should I add the domain, in which exim4 config file ?¿
henk, could I set up all mentioned in http://typo.submonkey.net/articles/2005/9/9/use-gmail-as-a-smart-host in the exim4.conf.template file ?¿
EdwardIII
CunningPike: hey again
CunningPike
Morning
EdwardIII
CunningPike: i got eximon working over X11 no hassle, but it doesn't seem to have, well, any features? http://www.madduck.co.uk/eximon.png
Zathraz
EdwardIII, try geximon
EdwardIII
hmm tried that, needed a gtk python plugin
so i got the module, then after that i run it but it just seems to hang - i guess i need to figure out howto switch it into debug mode?
i've still got that symlink
so essentially the config is in the default place
any clues, Zathraz?
whoa... just ran it with --help and it worked
how odd
maybe the problem was X11 forwarding not geximon at all
Zathraz
cool
hope it suits your needs better and stays stable
EdwardIII
looks pretty good Zathraz
