which only crazy people would penalize.
Cyndre
okay - docs are fairly vague and I haven't researched it yet - ty
probably the bounces
djce
which docs? exim docs aren't vague at all. very comprehensive, in fact.
Cyndre
no, cpanels
djce
ah
Cyndre
just checked quickly
not something I normally spend anytime on - unless we get a complaint
djce
Does ewall not call forward to your server for each recipient?
Cyndre
djce: regretably no - thats something I have asked them to fix
djce
oh, http://sssolutions.net/images/ew-session.gif suggests that it does

Cyndre
I have had to completely white list this stupid server
djce
assuming I'm looking at the right product.
Cyndre

djce
unless by "SMTP service" they mean ewall's smtp, not the external one.
ShaunR
can exim store it's queue to mysql?
phx
ShaunR, hope not :)
DukeDrake
hi
Is it possible to include other files for search into virtual.users?
I want to make email forwards available to users for editing
phx
i would use a database for that
DukeDrake
hm .. I'm not too experienced with exim, tbh
henk
then become experienced...

hi, is there a default charset for exim and is there a way to change it? or: what was the default charset on my old exim 4.5 and what has changed since i moved to a new server with updated debian 5 and exim 4.6? it seems that german umlauts in subjects have problems since i moved. but i dont find an error. mails from e.g. aol or msn are almost have broken umlauts in the subject. some other mails will be correct. depends on the sender.
my gues sis that my server uses utf-8, i installed all locales. but didn't help here.
(yes, :)) i asked almost same question about 1 month ago, but i couldnt find a solution yet. now users complain a lot because of some broken umlauts :P, only in the subject)
the only technical change, not regarding new versions, is that i moved from sa-exim to exiscan (to call spamassassin)
phx
the mail headers should only contain us-ascii
vizzy
phx, yes i know that. but for some funny reason ... if i send an email on my own via my exim, i get utf8 headers. means te subject is not encoded in any way
i also had a look at the mailfiles at the server. they are also not have encoded subjects.
phx
are you checking it in a MUA or the plain mime message itself?
vizzy
i checked the message headers via show source in my client, and the mailsfile on the server in the imapdir
phx
well, tell the originators of these mails to read some RFCs
vizzy
hehe, but as i said, my mozilla also sends unencoded subjects
phx
report the bug for mozilla devs?
vizzy
so, i should tell thenm to not use umlauts in the subject? thats ok for me, but my customers complaint about it because it was working on my very old redhat 7.3 with exim 4.5
phx
tell them to encode the non us-ascii headers

vizzy
report to mozilla devs, aol devs, web.de devs, gmx.de devs? hmmmm
phx
it's a standard. your MUA doesn't seem to be standard-compliant
if you doesn't comform to a standard you can expect such a behaviour
vizzy
erm
phx
it's a rule not to cross the street at a red light. you are doing it AND complying because you are getting hit by the others
vizzy
yes, i understand, ... but how to explain that to the users and make them not cancel the service
.... ok, thx
phx
btw i don't have this issue, never had
only with idiot php developers' scripts, all MUAs are fine
vizzy
if i send mail witrh unencoded header, its full yreadable and not broken on the mailfile itself and looks good in the mua too
phx
and i'm running 4.69
vizzy
yes, mail() is a pain
for my php scripts i always use a smtp class that forms headers in a good way and encodes all headers, much better than a broken mua it seems ;)
phx
we're using the database at first and a different deamon submits the mails to the MTA service
it's such a pain to wait the dns timeout of a mistyped email address for the webserver
vizzy
exactly the same for my newsletter system
using php-cli in a cronjob. and configurable syntaxchecks
but the best thing is to have a good bouncemanagement and let the mta handle errors and dns stuff
phx
perl by me, and i also got a PoC C++ deamon for it
though the C++ will win because of the threaded capabilities
henk
best thing is avoiding php...
vizzy
i wrote my own tool :) and put it opensource (tellmatic)
php is die pest
phx
yes, bounces are also handled here :)
vizzy

report_charset UTF-8 ... in my local.cf for SA, put report to header....., hmmmm. i'm not sure if that will cause a reformatting of the header....
ouch, so its not the mua but my spamassassin.... maybe
phx
now SA, i actually do had some issues with that
reporting and non us-ascii characters
at the end, i just disabled it
henk
you pass your mails _through_ SA? why?
i just hand SA the mail and get back a result about its' "spamminess" but SA never has access to the mail itself.
phx
i'm also doing smtptime SA
henk
me too
phx: was that supposed to be an answer? :)
phx
but still, you can use various SA variables after the check, and those can contain non us chars
henk
hm, that's true but why would you replace the subject with one of those variables?
phx
i wouldn't
i had the problem with some added headers
zver
hello. can you help me? how i may see content of letter in exim mail queue?
ShaunR
can exim store it's queue to mysql?
CunningPike
zver: Check out eximon
ShaunR: Not sure how that would accomplish anything
zver
CunningPike: thanks
petemc
or use exim -Mvb msgid
ShaunR
with exim -bpc can you specify a domain for it to count?
i want to test exim via the CLI, what args need to be passed to it to allow stdin.
petemc
use exiqgrep or exipick
for the first question
man exim for the second
also worth noting that exim is sendmail compatible, so you can read guides that talk about using sendmail on the command line

Hi can someone tell me how to add trusted_users in exim4

this is a entry from the mainlog
and another forum sugested that i update the trusted_users field in the exim.conf file but there is no exim.conf with exim4 and when I try and update it via update-exim4.conf.conf nothing happens
cannonball
drop the second ".conf" off of that command.
