is it possible to pipe the result of one command back in to exim, something like this??
command = /home/derek/exim/redirect.pl | /usr/sbin/exim -oMr redirected -bS
this is in my transports
with driver = pipe
simplechat
hi, i'm running exim on debian lenny stable i've just set it up and mail to root is ending up in /var/mail/mail rather then /var/mail/root
is there any way to correct this?
henk
simplechat: read README.Debian.gz
simplechat
henk, where would i find that?
henk
simplechat: /usr/share/dovecot/exim4/
uhm...
simplechat: /usr/share/doc/exim4/
simplechat
-bash: cd: /usr/share/doc/exim4/: No such file or directory
henk
simplechat: 'sigh' install exim4-doc
simplechat

exim4-doc-info
?
henk
if you like the info format...

simplechat
well its exim4-doc-info or exim4-doc-html
henk
looks like /usr/share/doc/exim4 is just a symlink to /usr/share/doc/exim4-base
simplechat
is there a plain text version
?
this is on a remote server
so i can't see any of the html/etc. docs
henk
is gzipped plaintext over here: /usr/share/dovecot/exim4/README.Debian.gz

why is it failing for f29d6663-a897-4dd3-8271-50dbfca4680c@online16.com
o nm, clearly they arent all digits
henk
:-p
simplechat
henk, thanks :)
henk, and that will tell me what to do?
henk
simplechat: nope, it will tell you something about the mails for root. search it for "root"

hi
how can I limit max number of exim processes?
ShaunR
can the spool directory be specified in the exim.conf?
djce
ShaunR: yes. http://exim.org/exim-html-current/doc/html/spec_html/ch14.html#SECID97
gngkai: http://exim.org/exim-html-current/doc/html/spec_html/ch14.html#SECID105
Depends on what your exim processes are doing (assuming you currently have more than you want).
Are they accepting incoming connections? Then see smtp_accept_max.
Are they queue runners? Then see queue_run_max.
gngkai
/usr/sbin/exim
-bd -q60m
ShaunR
how well does exim's lsearch scale on servers with large /etc/aliases or /etc/localdomains. For example say my /etc/localdomains file has 10K lines(domains) and my /etc/aliases have 100K lines(aliases). How well is exim going to be able to perform?
djce
lsearch by definition scales badly; but it depends on how busy your system is, etc.
Suck it and see.
Or use something other than lsearch.
ShaunR
it seams like it would scale badly
what other options are there?
djce
exim -bV | grep Lookups:
to see what's compiled in to your exim.
Then read in the docs to find out about each one.
ShaunR
Lookups: lsearch wildlsearch nwildlsearch iplsearch cdb dbm dbmnz dnsdb dsearch ldap ldapdn ldapm mysql nis nis0 nisplus passwd pgsql sqlite
hmm, wonder how well mysql works.
Cyndre
(Action) swears @ the scam that is www.backscatterer.org
so should I turn off sender verification checking to make backscatterer.org happy?
Saiko
how can I monitor exim, I dont want to use mailwatch and scanner
TTimo
hello .. I have some exim installs configured as 'mail sent by smarthost; received via SMTP or fetchmail' .. so I can have an MTA somewhere on our network and still configure apps to talk to an SMTP on 127.0.0.1 .. however I would like /etc/aliases to still work, so I can do a few remapping, in particular for 'root' and such accounts .. suggestions ?

CunningPike
Cyndre: Oh My God, yes
Cyndre: You'll making a lot more people less unhappy with you, too
Cyndre
CunningPike: all I am doing is a sender verify
** Sender Verification [?]
Verify that the domain mail reports as it origin actually exists
I have sender verification callouts disabled
personally I think its do to something out of my control though
a server that I have no say over accepts all mail for delivery then forwards it to me - sender confirmation service (ewall)
not sure what I can do
djce
Cyndre: depends why backscatter.org listed you.
Perhaps because you accept+bounce, instead of rejecting bad recipients during the transaction?
Cyndre
thats what Im assuming - and I have no control over that
djce
Why so?
Cyndre
in order to bounce for a non existant user the confirmation server accepts the mail, then delivers it to me, at which point I reject it with a bounce - repeatedly asked them to fix it and the senior sysadmin bash's me everytime I suggest it has a serious problem
djce
heh. Not good :-(
Cyndre
very much so
actually almost got fired for trying to remove $1000 worth of incomming cash everymonth
so next step is to escalate it to the senior sysadmin and just tell him until ewall is fixed/changed/removed I am unable to properly administer our mail server
djce
Well, it sounds like bs.org have you listed because of the bounces - they have no reason to list you because of (callout-less) verification.
Cyndre
doing the sender verification after delivery should get me blocked as well though right?
djce
Depends, but in a normal configuration, a callout-less sender verify is just a DNS lookup,
