Guest32943: notably there is a #org-mode channel

thanks khaije1!

hmm, time to finally take charge of my gnus-group-line-format
going to try to make a hybrid of the abbreviated group names
i want the server name abbreviated, but the folder names less so
(inspiration to consider this again was a recent topic of nil'ing the primary select method, with (setq gnus-select-method '(nnnil "")))
benaiah
(Action) 's office is freezing cold despite supposedly being set to 71
parsnip
hmm, i really don't see gnus-group-uncollapsed-levels actually doing anything.
despite having an "Short (collapsed) group name: %c\n"
didi
71!1! o.O
parsnip
wow, pretty cool: (info "(gnus) Advanced Formatting")

I'm trying to do photoshop->html on a computer with >512mb of vram. photoshop is so fu*king slow.
josteink
so in te last 2 days Ive had a flood of people star my awesome uml-mode
Im not sure I trust this :P
And since its all hosted on github, I cant even follow http referers to see who caused it
first world problems, eh?

parsnip
(Action) have to draw the line at gnus-user-format-function-X today
*may have to
dakrone
josteink: github has traffic graphs with referrers for repos now
https://github.com/<user>/<repo>/graphs/traffic
parsnip
hmm, this example is pretty legit, if i wanted to put on the bondage gear http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/GnusFormatting#toc8
josteink
dakrone: oh really? thanks
TIL

Let's promote organic programs.
Or maybe silicon machines?
This is confusing.
benaiah
computers have got to have carbon in them somewhere
parsnip
well, this will do as an improvement for today: %(%0,1c:%G%)
(prints first letter of server, ":", and full path to folder

Has anybody noticed occasional errors in compiled .elc files generated by emacs, necessitating re-installation of packages?
josteink
dakrone: according to that, I had 500+ unique people check out my stuff yesterday
out of nowwhere
benaiah
healer: you shouldn't need to reinstall. you should just be able to byte-compile
josteink
I have a few users who are university employees... wonder if one of those used it in a lecture :P
benaiah
josteink: my first guess would be that a company switched to your stuff en masse, but I dunno what companies use emacs in those kind of numbers
healer
Well, i initially thought they were bugs in the sources, and it took me some hair-pulling to realize that the errors were coming from the compilation of valid source programs
josteink
ah well
if any of those translate into real users, Im sure I will see bug-reports soon :P
benaiah
healer: right, so an C-0 M-x byte-recompile-directory <dir> should fix it for you
josteink
maybe that will help unravel the mystery

healer
Thanks
benaiah
josteink: "I'm seeing some weird indenta..." "WHO ARE YOU?"
josteink
REVEAL YOURSELF
Go completely LOTR on them before I'm willing to fix bugs
sounds like a plan
benaiah
josteink: BACK TO THE SHADOWS
healer
I only want to know how others have been able to detect problems in packages as due to compilation errors; i almost filed a bug report for non-bug!
josteink
healer: there is a (setq) for that, I think
benaiah
healer: I usually just recompile if I notice the bug coming from a .elc file, and if it persists I'll continue with my normal process of spending 20 mintues trying to fix it and ignoring it forever
josteink
;; avoid ever loading old code from outdated ELC-files
(setq load-prefer-newer t)
I have it in my init.el :)
healer
Okay, thanks
benaiah

healer
I'll add it to mine

I'd like to remove excess parens from a data structure. Is there a function to do this?
elarson
is there a package to get more esoteric unicode characters like "pile of poo" to actually have an image?
khaije1
I should say, the data structure is a list.
elarson
(Action) checks the package listing
benaiah
khaije1: wdym by "excess parens"
Sketch
elarson: that's called a font ;)
khaije1
benaiah: for example: '((((data that I care about)))) should be '(data that I care about)
do i just caaaar my way to victory?
Yanez
khaije1: so basically if your list has length=1 you take its car, and repeat?
elarson
Sketch: in that case, do you know why menlo doesn't have silly emoticon unicode characters ;)
benaiah
khaije1: do you want this in the context of lisp data structures or text?
Yanez
khaije1: BTW, there is no guarantee that those parentheses are unnecessary, maybe they *had* to be there...
khaije1
Yanez: not confident, but that sounds correct ... benaiah: lisp data structures please
Yanez: sure, but I'm parsing out data for down stream processing so it's ok to drop certain things
benaiah
cause smartparens might have something to do that textually, and if it doesn't then you could pretty easily write one using sp functions
catern
dear #emacs
didi
Here it comes...
bentham90120
can i setup an org command to group by todo, then heading?
agenda command*
catern
what should I cover in an emacs workshop for beginners besides what's in the tutorial?
Yanez
khaije1: then you can use something like this (defun remp (l) (if (and (consp l) (= (length l) 1)) (rempar (car l)) l))
benaiah
Yanez: what is "rempar"?
didi
catern: Are they programmers?
benaiah
did you mean to reinvoke "remp"?
catern
didi: novice ones, but yes
didi
catern: Maybe a programming workflow? If python, show M-x run-python. If C, show M-x compile.
Yanez
benaiah: sorry, I meant to call the function rempar, not remp
benaiah
Yanez: ah, ok
Yanez
(defun rempar (l) (if (and (consp l) (= (length l) 1)) (rempar (car l)) l))
catern
didi: very good idea!
keep 'em coming :)
didi
I will stop while I am on top!
benaiah
Yanez: that won't work though if the final list has one element
didi
(Action) drops mic
benaiah
say, '((((((a))))))
dakrone
catern: perhaps basic dired usage?
Yanez
benaiah: true... but the question did not specify what to do in that case. it was a quick and dirty suggestion :)
catern
dakrone: nah
since i don't even know that :)
