if you want something different, dr. slump would also be an option
maybe I should just watch jackie chan's movies instead
they have this similiar quality of being comparably simple in their execution, but way more satisfying than the average action flick I get to see
didi
Nothing like using casts to silence the compiler.
catern
doop doop doop
dazed_and_amused
Compiler: uhh, you can't really do that
didi: THIS IS A FLOAT DAMMIT SHUTUP
didi
dazed_and_amused: You joke...
"dude, you can't really do arithmetic with these" "lol, k, (cast)"
dazed_and_amused
say it with me: this is a float
but its not
SAY IT
seriously its not
(float)YOU'LL SAY IT AND YOU'LL LIKE IT
......*sigh...fine
poor gcc
it doesn't deserve a tenth of what I make it do

dear #emacs
why does undo-tree-mode not make a tool-bar button for redo
it should, don't you think, #emacs?
also, why does undo-tree-mode not have a hook
e1f
hanging people on an undo tree brings them back to life
didi
I thought it was burying them in a pet sematary.

demize
(Was that an intentional misspelling?)
e1f
stephen king book
demize
I'm aware of the book, which is why I'm unsure whether it was intentional or not. ;p
jisfon
Okay, so, I started reading SICP... Come to find out, there's Calculus in the book later. How in the hell am I going to tackle that? Do I really have to know Calculus to proceed pass that point?
didi
jisfon: No, but it helps.
wgreenhouse
it's not surprising that a course for EE students might exoect calculus
*expect
jisfon
Can I pick up the Calculus in the book easily?
But, I only made it to Algebra, Functions, and Data Analysis in high school.
wgreenhouse
it might help to do outside reading, like have a university calc text from the library handy
aidalgol
Why on Earth does the SEP not have an article on fascism?
wasamasa
(Action) waits for the usual SICP bait to happen
hodapp
SICP bait?
mns
jisfon: spend some time at khanacademy.org to learn basic calculus. that might help.
wasamasa
,sicp-bait
fsbot
<grizzlydeer> Someone in another channel just told me that SICP is too advanced for a typical programmer, despite being aimed at beginners. \:
wgreenhouse
wasamasa: typical programmers haven't taken calculus?
ouch
wasamasa
wgreenhouse: I wouldn't know
aidalgol
I must've missed the calculus when I read it.
Or maybe I just skimmed over that section too quickly
wasamasa
considering I did switch to a college to avoid actually learning maths
yet I found the first chapter of SICP to be mildly challenging
jisfon
wasamasa: Same here. I was expecting it to be easier, for sure.
e1f
khan academy should have lots of calculus courses

Fuco
wasamasa: haha I was about to notify you about the sicp bait :D
wasamasa
jisfon: doeet
Fuco
I see its all settled
aidalgol
I think I got to chapter 4 and went, "OK, I pretty much know all this," and just skimmed it.
(and the rest)
e1f
cs students don't require calculus, but ee students are required to
jisfon
wasamasa: "To avoid maths..." How did you tackle the calculus then?
Fuco
aidalgol: I got to page 2 with your strategy
aidalgol
jisfon: May I suggest http://htdp.org/
jisfon
elf: Yeah, I'm interested in EE
aidalgol
Fuco: Same, but I found the philosophical side of the early chapters interesting, nonetheless.
wasamasa
jisfon: what is done there is hardly maths
hodapp
jisfon: interested in EE, or studying EE?
wasamasa
jisfon: it hardly requires you to actually do proofs, to actually study what makes up mathematics, to redo all the foundations necessary for a deep understanding for it
Fuco
I feel like I should read it if only for having some real arguments when I argue about it
wasamasa
jisfon: no, you just learn some basic rules about differentials and integrals and that's pretty much it
jisfon
hodapp: interested; I have no plans for college, if that's what you're asking.
hodapp
jisfon: the math involved in EE can be quite involved if you want to understand any amount of the theory.
aidalgol
Interested in EE, but no plans for college. That might be a problem...
Fuco
<e1f> hanging people on an undo tree brings them back to life << too bad I'm not the maintainer of that package... I would so use that on a logo
and it's true, the default undo system almost made me commit suicide
jisfon
aidalgol: How so?
aidalgol: I have SICP as stellar and solid intro, don't I?
Fuco
hodapp: please, math in EE is just physics
aidalgol
Reminds me of one of my high-school classmates who wanted to be an architect, but didn't even want to study algebra.
Fuco
(now we wait for jordi to bait too :D)
hodapp
Fuco: no, it's not just physics...
aidalgol
jisfon: For EE? Not really.
wasamasa
jisfon: ah, stellar and solid
jisfon: you're getting closer to the baiting phase
aidalgol
hodapp: your troll detector needs to be recalibrated.
wasamasa
,sicp-bait
fsbot
<crusty_the_fig> What do you guys think about the SICP Python redesign: http://composingprograms.com/
tali713
aidalgol: you can basically skip over the calculus problems without losing much if anything.
hodapp
wasamasa D:
tali713
aidalgol: and they're only in the first couple of chapters.
jisfon
aidalgol: But, the theory and mathematical logic is provides is a solid foundation, is it not?
aidalgol
tali713: In SICP? Oh, *now* I remember. They were just some examples.
wasamasa
,sicp-bait
fsbot
<ghost_runner> I'm a beginner and I'm curious: What will SICP/Scheme teach me/help me learn? :)
Fuco
hodapp: well, I don't really know what EE is, so there... but I don't think it touches much of math...
nb. I don't consider learning how to calculate X doing math
aidalgol
wasamasa: *Now* we're talking.
tali713
aidalgol: indeed, not much to worry about since the goal isn't teaching calculus, just using math you are probably taking at the same time in another course.
hodapp
Fuco: It includes quite a bit of applied math when it gets into signal processing and image processing, both of which are traditionally EE domains.
aidalgol
jisfon: OK, let's assume it is. What's your next step?
Fuco: EE = Electrical Engineering
Fuco
Heh, my roomate does image processing.
aidalgol: well I know that... but what is Electrical Engineering...
I would never say image processing is EE
jisfon
aidalgol: Learning C, binary, hex, Asm, etc.
Fuco
I would say it's making/designing circuits or something like that
