tell me something I don't know
qsammy
woo we have 24 lift-off
ryouma
i use rcirc's loggging feature. recently i discovered that it just stops logging sometimes. for example, last night somebody highlighted me on #debian at oftc, and the scrollback no longer contains the dialog, so i went to the logs. the last log is [2015-09-28 Mon 16:52]. it's still not logging.
(Action) wonders if he should put the effort into znc, circe, or erc, but if possible would prefer to just have rcirc work again
jsgrant
ryouma: Circe is pretty nice for (my thusfar very trivial) logging.
(Action) still hasn't ever touched znc.
neale
znc is pretty nice for when you occasionally disconnect
(Action) rcirc user
ryouma
neale: how much time does it take to get it to be reasonable?
neale
hard to say, maybe an hour? I spent a lot of time hacking rcirc to make it play nice so my time spent is sort of high (but you can just merge the changes)

jsgrant
ryouma: I know they have a webgui module-thing now, so I assume the basic entry level now is not that steep.
neale
yeah the web-ui is pretty good
and there's a CLI "initial setup" where you answer a few questions and then you're off to the races
benaiah
znc is pretty nice but it's kind of a pain to work with
ryouma
neale: merge changes?
neale: is that dpkg-reconfigure enabled or something you do yourself?
neale
https://github.com/nealey/rcirc/commit/ec9e3fa273712c27965e1d7c24a8cfa5c86dbc7e ryouma, changes

jsgrant
ryouma: I think it's like zsh on some systems, where it's an automatic prompt if it doesn't pick up any config files on a given user.
ryouma
neale: oic you had to hack on rcirc.el
neale
yeah, in order to have it connect to the same host/port multiple times (and make pretty buffer names)
benaiah
(Action) still needs to make znc stop spamming him with banlists when he connects a second client
neale
but now you can reap the benefits of the pain I endured!
ryouma
neale: thanks. strangely, i shy away from merging in patches, even though git should in prinicple reduce that barrier.
i.e. next time i upgrade emacs i don't wnat to merge patches in, unless it's a big win
neale
(Action) shrugs
ryouma
oh i suppose i just grab your version
neale
you could do that too.
ryouma
and then youd o all the work :)
neale
or you could pester me to submit my changes to the FSF
ryouma
/maybe/ i should try circe, given that it probably has modern features persumably built in, similar to rcirc. it just means another package to deal with and set up to my specs. (rcirc works perfectly for me except for logging bug, an input cycling bug, and (i think) lack of proxy.) erc i never got to do what i do with rcirc.
neale
you could run all three at the same time and see which you prefer
have conversations with yourself
it'd be super
ryouma
ok, my options seem to be: try to fix logging or ask about it, circe, bare znc, and neale's rcirc patch + znc

benaiah
neale: IME if you try to run more than one emacs irc client at a time emacs dies of blood loss pretty rapidly
ryouma
is znc commonly used in #emacs? it does not get mentioned much.
although that might be because it works flawlessly, yet, um, boringly, so people neither bi**h nor gush
bremner
I used to use it, but then I switch to bip. I had no real objections to znc, but I had a kindof kneejerk reaction against "download this code from the wiki and run it"
ryouma
you have to do that?
that's a dealbreaker for me
gnomon
(Action) pines for the simple days of curl ... | sudo bash
Kids these days with their fancy "copy code from the wiki"...
ryouma
i will go look up bip, which is in debian
bremner
ryouma: well, I forget what extension I wanted that I needed the wiki for. znc is also in Debian
benaiah
ryouma: I think wasamasa uses it, and I do
dunno about any others
ryouma
benaiah: znc or bip?
benaiah
ryouma: znc
wasamasa
yes, I do
why wouldn't I
I'm not crazy enough to write my own bouncer and ZNC is good enough
ryouma
did you guys investigate bip?
Nafai
I used to use bip, around 2006 or so.

qDot_
(Action) been super happy with znc too
lswart
(Action) happy znc user, and uses znc-erc client for emacs
qDot_
znc-erc client?
lswart
There's a znc docker image as well, if you're into docker: https://hub.docker.com/r/jimeh/znc/
yeah, I run `M-x znc-erc` and I'm in
