ville: that's silly
escondida
ville: The return value of the last function run is the return value
tali713
ville: why not do (identity (identity var)) or even (identity (identity (identity var)))? or you know, just plain old var.
ville
escondida: yeah that's why i do the idenitity function
tali713: wasn't aware i could do that
tali713
ville: that's because escondida lied to you, the value of the last /sexp/ is the value an implicit or explicit progn evaluates to.
escondida
tali713: Ah, yes, quite right.
ville: For future reference, the elisp manual is an invaluable reference
tali713
agreed.
ryouma
can weight bold be modified? for example, making it brighter or more bold?
the contrast between regular and bold is slightly too low
JordiGH
BOLDER

ryouma
no, i don't live there
hit and run
tali713
ville: in general though, if you have to do that a lot, you should try to reconsider the way you are solving problems, it shouldn't come up often.
wgreenhouse
ryouma: (info "(elisp) Face Attributes") says that "extra-bold" is a possible weight
I'm not sure what the font rendering is meant to do with that, however
ryouma
wgreenhouse: thanks, i tried that a while back, but it was not subjectively different iirc
wasamasa
whether it's honored is a different question
ryouma
right
ville
tali713: yeah just banging at the keyboard trying put something together and i'm not-a-lisp-programmer is my excuse too!
ryouma
i'm trying to find an attribute that will make num3 be ignorable but also stand out. this soudns like a contradiction, but i find that a dull bg makes it stand out without being ignorable, while bold makes it ignorable but also stand out. just want it slightly more standy outy.
Fuco
this book is hilarious... so they find bones of some aliens who digged on earth for $metal and... they send letters to each other to communicate
I love old scifi books
tali713
ville: like, don't (let ((ans 0) (number-list (number-sequence 0 10))) (dolist (i number-list) (setq ans (+ ans i))) ans) it's wrong on two levels.
Fuco
or rather... this is more like alternative history with realistic technology... it's still hilarious
tali713
billymeter: first of all `dolist' takes an argument for what you want it to evaluate to, and secondly (apply '+ (number-list 0 10)) is much more succinct.
ville: oops meant for you ^^
wgreenhouse
ryouma: it's likely you have no font that satisfies the fontconfig style ExtraBold
I don't
ryouma
interesting
wgreenhouse
I did have exactly one that satisfied ExtraLight
billymeter
tali713: np :)
wgreenhouse
ryouma: try this madness: "fc-list : family style file spacing | grep ExtraBold"
ryouma
fc-list :family style file spacing | grep ExtraBold? fc-list : family style file spacing | grep ExtraBold? both return the empty string.
wgreenhouse
yes, the space following the colon was intentional
ryouma
am i shortchanging myself by just running fluxbox? that is, do de's do some sort of font thing that i should do also?

wgreenhouse
contrast e.g. "fc-list : family style file spacing | grep Italic" for what a non-empty list of eligible fonts would look like
ryouma: afaik fluxbox has nothing to do with font rendering in X clients (applications)
aside from rendering their titlebars and such if any
ville
tali713: yeah i've used that dolist "return value" thing. http://codepad.org/adG4rK0C here for example the input is something like "/a/b/c/d/" and the loop whitles it down "/a/b/c/, "/a/b/"... and stopping when it either runs out of path elements or gets non-nil
parsnip
Fuco: maybe it's scifi as long as there are scientifically plausible alternatives.
nzst
isn't that hard science fiction?
Fuco
yea, I guess
ryouma
wgreenhouse: well, after running flux for a long time, i learned that i had to run a "dbus" command in my .xinitrc. just wondering if i am supposed to run some sort of font server or font config program too, or something.
Fuco
it's in 1950s so they don't have internet and all the magic like that
they just send letters around :D
wgreenhouse
ryouma: no, I think you're just experiencing the median level of suck in gnu systems re: font options
ryouma
interestingly, it does say /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSans-ExtraLight.ttf: DejaVu Sans,DejaVu Sans Light:style=ExtraLight. does this imply :weight extra-light will work without modification or do i need to use that particular font (dejavusans-extralight or something) to do it? i think i use deja vu sans mono (default linux emacs)
wgreenhouse: ok
wgreenhouse: i'm not complaining too much as emacs's default font is mostly pretty good
making bold slightly bolder would be nice though
(or brighter. of course i could make it brighter by explicitly changing the color per face.)
but that's extensional vs. intensional specification (if i got the terms correct)
wgreenhouse
ryouma: it looks like it silently succeeds but doesn't actually do anything if you try setting the extra-light weight when your default face's font doesn't have it
ryouma
(explicit vs. calculated)
yeah
wgreenhouse
I have the same one face that provides ExtraLight
ryouma
but in this case i hoped it would work as i use deja vu by default. so i don't get how you'd get it to ever use extra light unless you specify your font to be extra light, which defeats the purpose of weights.
wgreenhouse
ryouma: yep. afaict emacs considers weights advisory
and just drops them on the ground if the default face's font doesn't support them
e.g. themes that contain italics don't show italics when I'm using my usual italicsless fonts
ryouma
so people actually specify deja vu light as their font? and you can't combine it with deja vu? i thought font families might have been invented for that purpose.
Fuco
are there any animals/creatures who don't have sense organs on their heads? (I'm thinking something higher in the ladder than worms)
obviously it's most economic to have it nearest to the brain, but I wonder... evolution doesn't always work the optimum
escondida
Fuco: I mean, there were a bunch of weird phyla back before one of the big extinction events...
Fuco
whichever do you mean
twainwek`
can you open speedbar in -nw mode
ryouma
wgreenhouse: how large do you find slack's repo compared to debian's? last night we were talking about arch as a possible refuge/exile from debian.
nzst
Fuco: octopi taste with their suction cups, supposedly
ryouma
i'm thinking debian tries to be too fancy, and if it did a reliable job of it, that would be great, but it sometimes is incomplete or makes assumptions that are violated
tali713
Fuco: I suppose that depends on what you mean by sense organs and head. My largest sensory organ covers the outside of my entire body.
Fuco
touch still weirds me out btw :D
tali713
nzst: sure, but they also distribute a bunch of their thinking out to their arms too, so is /that/ their head.
Fuco
like, when you touch yourself it should just break :D
tali713
you misspelled calibrate.
wasamasa
Fuco: let's touch each other
Fuco
let's
put your hand on your monitor
macrobat
you can't tickle yourself, your body anticipates the touch
wasamasa
boring
parsnip
hmm, can i do a -*- font: 10 -*- ?
tali713
macrobat: and tickling is weird, because there is an element of suppressed fear in it. it's hard to be tickled by someone you are genuinely afraid of.
macrobat
I think I'd succeed
Fuco
tali713: how the hell did they figure that out: O
holomorph
wow emacs 25 feature freeze
parsnip
all i remember is hate. i hate being tickled.
wgreenhouse
ryouma: slackware's formal repo is tiny, on the order of 1400 packages. with another 5600 or so in the community-maintained slackbuilds.org project (roughly equivalent to the Arch User Repository)
wasamasa
#chicken told me Stefan is stepping down
holomorph
and stefan is passing on the torch
wasamasa
I am disappoint
wgreenhouse
the official repo is tiny enough that that a full install consists of most of it
