Let's make a movie that combines Emacs with the normal early '80s portrayal of computers as big frightening mainframes.
didi
We already use Emacs on a terminal, so WIP.
i jaaaaail-break k
It's on my head now.

I don't know that

never heard before

Oh well. I am glad I was the one to introduce you to it. Who knows what could have happened otherwise.

I thought duck duck go was powered by google

Let's change default search engine in opposition to google logo update

I like its !bang feature.

i use those a lot

nullie: What will it do?
nullie
search for code patterns and error codes
and errors in general
didi
I don't get it.
Like regexps?
nullie
like strings
didi
Doesn't it do it already?

at least
no they tend to reorder

Even with double quotes?

Hi! Is there any nice Jabber/XMPP for emacs? I'm looking for advanced stuff with OTR, file transfer, etc.
alpha-
well, there is an irc client
and there is an irc<->xmpp gateway (bitlbee)
so that might be one option.
sysx1000
i can run mcabber in *terminal* but it's not funny ;)
alpha-
I don't know if any of the emacses terminals support 256 colors yet
ansi-term and such
last time I checked they did not
sysx1000
jabber.el looks promising

Anyone has recommendations on org-mode tutorials?

Hey all
Fuco
> Searle claims that Watson, like other computational machines, is capable only of manipulating symbols, but has no ability to understand the meaning of those symbols ... but what other is thinking than manipulating symbols :O
jkaye``
Anyone here use idris-mode
Fuco
how can a computer ever be intelligent by such a definition... it is always symbol manipulation
nobody knows what things are :O
jkaye``
I'm not sure if the mode is just not very nice or if something is wrong with my setup
tali713
Fuco: when people say things like "conscious" "intelligent" or "soul", I ask them to stop and explain what they mean before continuing.

Query replace regex in rectangle anyone?
jlf
ok, idgi. ln -s foo bar fails with "ln: failed to create symbolic link `bar': Read-only file system", but echo hi >baz succeeds. this is in a virtualbox folder shared from a windows host to an ubuntu guest. anyone have insight?
oh, it's intentional behavior for security reasons
tali713
n.m. was about to check to make sure it wasn't using some archaic symlink incompatible fs.
jlf
there's a "New" bug about it.. from 4 years ago :/
Shambles_
I seem to have run into another problem that is probably me not understanding some part of Emacs... I'm trying to get whitespace-cleanup-mode set up ( https://github.com/purcell/whitespace-cleanup-mode ). I've followed the instructions, and everything seems to have gone fine. I added a mode hook for text-mode and prog-mode, and that seems to be working (judging from the mode list).
However, I do not get a warning either in the minibuffer nor in the *Messages* buffer when I set this: (setq whitespace-action '(report-on-bogus))
I have determined that the value is being seen (it appears in multiple buffers, not just the one I set it in). I have made sure to open the buffer with a clean file, and to 'mess it up' (adding trailing whitespace, to be specific).
I'm at a loss as to what is wrong.
wasamasa
you could trace `whitespace-report'
Shambles_
It does appear to be a list type, not a symbol. Originally I set it as a quoted symbol and got an error in the *Messages* buffer, and when I customize it it sets the value to a quoted list.
(Action) tries to figure out how to do that.
scrubbrush
Hello, I am trying to install elpy according to the instructions at https://github.com/jorgenschaefer/elpy
wasamasa
M-x trace-function
scrubbrush
When I do the step M-x package-install RET elpy RET, I get a not found on elpy
wasamasa
this allows you to see whether the traced function was called and with which arguments
catau
hi, question for any evil-mode folks here: is it possible to emacsify "xnoremap p pgvy"? Like, (define-key evil-visual-state-map (kbd "p") 'SomethingSomething)? would (kbd "pgvy") work for the 2nd argument?
wasamasa
nope
because it would be applied recursively
so you'd get an infinite loop of NOPE and that's not what you'd want
catau
wasamasa, I see, the p would recurse?
wasamasa
catau: yes
catau: write a proper command and bind that instead
catau
wasamasa, I have not used elisp before, does each letter in visual mode correspond to a function in elisp (in order for me to compose those four functions for pgvy)?
wasamasa
catau: not necessarily
Shambles_
wasamasa: It does not seem to be being called.
wasamasa
Shambles_: well, time to hit the sources then
