heddwch
benaiah: Ah, fair enough heh
pytnik
I have a question...Is it true way to use ERC or whatever as IRC client?
hodapp
that question doesn't make sense
tetheno
Yes, I don't understand it either
Sketch
not sure plan9 is exactly ancient
heddwch
It's been about 20 years since it was relevant, so I'd say so
Sketch
Plan 9 from Bell Labs is a distributed operating system, originally developed by the Computing Sciences Research Center at Bell Labs between the mid-1980s and 2002.
pytnik
No, I use weechat in console, and now, as I become emacs addicted I think, it's better to go inside emacs
Sketch
hmm, guess it is pretty old

benaiah
Sketch: I'd even typed up "in before arguments over what constitutes ancient" but didn't send it
tetheno
pytnik I do use ERC and I'm happy with it. Circe is another good option.
cestdiego
anyone uses gitter?
wasamasa
you I bet
benaiah
lol
,anyone
fsbot
Just ask your question. It's the best way to know if anyone can help.
cestdiego
it'd be cool if there was an ERC-gitter that syntax highlight code snippets
benaiah
wasamasa: I actually like that response better than ,anyone
cestdiego
wasamasa: lol
benaiah
cestdiego: you mean using gitter's IRC bridge?
wasamasa
benaiah: well, to be pulled off properly, it's best if you've encountered that person using it
cestdiego
benyeah
wasamasa
benaiah: and in this case, I'm pretty sure since I've spotted them there for the first time
pytnik
//say tetheno: thx bro u have pushed me to learn erc
cestdiego
benaiah: yeah
wasamasa: btw I finished the assembler today it takes like 1 min to go through the PingPong code though (> 2k lines)
wasamasa
cestdiego: hmk
cestdiego: is its code public?
benaiah
cestdiego: pretty sure to be usable it'd need server-side stuff. irc messages are too short and abbreviated to do much useful highlighting based on heuristic text analysis, I'd guess
cestdiego
haven't pushed yet. I don't know if the rules of the course will let me D: So I'll try and make a major mode out of it :)
wasamasa
cestdiego: if they won't, time to change courses
e1f
let's create a glitter disco theme for emacs

cestdiego
benaiah: it helps that the first line is always something like ```elisp, ```python
I was wondering what would it take to make such a plugin for ERC :O
benaiah
cestdiego: right gitter has that whole ubiquitous use of newlines in ims
wasamasa
cestdiego: I can tell you if you were using circe...
wgreenhouse
cestdiego: you might look at ,,erc-tex,, for inspiration
fsbot
erc-tex is [0] http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/erc-tex.el
[1] compatible with http://code.google.com/p/pidgintex/
[2] compatible with weechat.el's inline LaTeX rendering
cestdiego
thanks wgreenhouse
although I never managed to make erc-tex work on my setup :(
benaiah
the only thing I find more hilarious than gitter are the people who try to use slack for public chat
hodapp
whaaaa?
(Action) realizes he hasn't used Slack in months
wgreenhouse
yes, many thousands of them. despite there being no official setup for guest users or public channels yet
hodapp
...whoops.
cestdiego
it's fun and stuff until you lose your messages
when you hit the 5k limit
wasamasa
ouch
why are they using that instead of like, IRC then?
cestdiego
I bet it's all the GIFs
wasamasa
that must be it
I'd get it if it were for work and someone paid it for you
but for opensource projects, eh
seangrove
I'd like prettify-symbols to replace % with x, right now I'm using (push '("%" . "?x?€") prettify-symbols-alist), but that gives me a different char
wgreenhouse
cestdiego: I thought the 5K limit was the equivalent of an IRC bouncer's offline message buffer
parsnip
well, slack seems to manage things for ppl.
wgreenhouse
what happens when you exceed it?
cestdiego
wgreenhouse: messages get deleted FIFO
wgreenhouse
cestdiego: that's exactly what my ZNC would do, which is part of why I don't ZNC anymore
cestdiego
and in an IRC bouncer you can log your messages and they'll be safe.
wgreenhouse
perfectly possible to miss messages while using a bouncer if you're away long enough
cestdiego
don't they? D:
wgreenhouse
cestdiego: if you enabled logging anyway
in ZNC buffering and logging are separate
seangrove
Is it possible to replace a string of characters with a different string with prettify-symbols, or only can it only use a single char as a replacement?
wasamasa
seangrove: IIRC it's limited to a single char
cestdiego
seangrove: AFAIK it's only symbols
wgreenhouse
cestdiego: also a message in the logs that's too old to still be buffered won't alert you to its existence in any way
so you'd have to grovel over the logs
cestdiego
ye...but if it's that old, you won't be scrolling up... you just do a find grep into your logs
wgreenhouse
sure
cestdiego
for the keywords or usernames you might remember
wgreenhouse
and that sometimes been a useful way for me to re-find weird config tricks and such
cestdiego
ye I know that feeling :)
wgreenhouse
idk, I'm finding life better in a single client than with a bouncer
seangrove
cestdiego: bummer
cestdiego
seangrove: if you find out a way, tell me though :P
wgreenhouse: what do you mean?
seangrove
cestdiego: I'm looking for unicode characters with built in subscripts to get around it ;)
wasamasa
seangrove: use gucharmap
cestdiego
maybe...use an overlay?
wasamasa
don't if you care about performance
the pretty-symbols thing is done by adding a composition text property anyways
wgreenhouse
cestdiego: I now use erc in a long-lived emacs process accessible over ssh+tmux, instead of involving a separate bouncer
I find fewer consistency and coherence issues in reading channels
my place in the buffer is even kept with erc-keep-place, so I can see where I stopped reading the channel
cestdiego
that looks cool
does that approach work for X forwarding?
I like to preview images that are sent on some "channels"
wgreenhouse
cestdiego: I'm on that emacs over X right now actually, because I'm in the same building as the machine that hosts it :P
cestdiego
so what if that emacs vps crashes though ? D:
wgreenhouse
sometimes the connections I'm on don't support it, though
cestdiego
will you loose everything? ;_; or you have logging every 3 min or so
wgreenhouse
you can set up variou logging strategies, even in the hook that gets triggered when a message arrives and is printed in the buffer if you're especially paranoid
*various
cestdiego
hmmm... sounds cool :)
wonder if a RaspPi can handle emacs and ERC
tali713
yes, easily
