JordiGH
It's total militarisation, and it's massive, and it's gigantic.
parsnip
wgreenhouse: okay, i concede, but it's not all clear to me
turbofail
the US military is one of the largest employers in the US
wgreenhouse
JordiGH: It's fascism, literally, and I'm happy to say so all the time.
turbofail
actually i think it's just the largest, period
davidw
JordiGH, 'total' might be the most hyperbolic thing ever written, no?
wgreenhouse
JordiGH: propping up the economy through expansion of the military and propping up support for the government through glorification of the security services is literally fascism
and in that sense both parties here are fascistic
ryouma
how does wasting money prop up the economy? (did not read scrollback)
davidw
wgreenhouse, you do kind of lose people with those arguments, as even people who are not in favor of that kind of thing don't think the US is just like 1930ies Italy
my (Italian) wife's relatives lived through that and.... yeah, not the same thing

wgreenhouse
davidw: maybe not for you, because you're not currently among the targets of the demagoguery
davidw
which is not to say 'hey, everything is just fine'
wgreenhouse
davidw: and fwiw I'm related to Holocaust survivors and very much worried about the '30s parallels
ryouma: in the long term, it doesn't, because military investments are among the worst you can make (depreciation is very rapid, and you can't easily use e.g. an A-10 to spray crops)
ryouma: but in the short term, it's a way to fake your way to higher employment
and also a protected-by-law export industry
our only federal industrial policy pretty much is to sell weapons to NATO and Israel and Japan
turbofail
it also secures your access to certain natural resources in the short term
davidw
wgreenhouse, it's not a very productive rhetorical device to make 'extreme' comparisons - it'll make even people sympathetic to your POV kind of roll their eyes
wgreenhouse
davidw: I don't fu*king care because it's accurate
davidw: Making more moderate comparisons doesn't get people to listen either.
davidw
it's actually not very accurate in a lot of ways, if you read about Mussolini and company in fascist Italy.
you can draw parallels, of course, but... to go from that to say it's just like that is not very accurate
wgreenhouse
davidw: I'm using fascism to actually mean something in particular and not just as a generic disparagement. A certain brand of US politics right now is based on recovery of a lost empire (or respect in the world), being able to defeat militarily the next several countries, the notion that our rearmament is a different thing than, say, China's rearmament, etc.
Military glorification as politics and as economic planning
mollymorphic
I'm getting a weird behavior in magit, when I press space in a commit msg it inserts a linebreak, any ideas?
wgreenhouse
davidw: I don't just throw "fascist" out as a generic insult; I use it where I think it fits empirically
benaiah
does anyone know how to make circe highlight nicks in messages with the same colors they have as senders?
Mawile
mollymorphic: Maybe C-h k <Spc> might tell you something?
tali713
Indeed, it is literally fascist, not "like onto the state of affairs in italy during fascism". Even with political perspectives that are much more adored, I'd be hard pressed to find two countries that are identical to each other in nature just because they have the same form of government.
benaiah
enable-circe-highlight-all-nicks highlights them all the same color
Mawile
That will show what function the key is bound to
miskatonic
forcer knows everything about circe
benaiah
miskatonic: indeed
Mawile
(Of course, you would need to do that in Magit Commit)
wgreenhouse
davidw: Also Mussolini wasn't the only fascist regime. The Greek junta of the mid-20th century was also fascist, as was Franco's Spain and Peron's Argentina
the definition of fascism is not "exactly like Mussolini"
unver
Is fascism inherently bad?

turbofail
fascism worked out OK for taiwan
davidw
unver, pretty much
mollymorphic
Mawile: SPC runs the command self-insert-command, which is an interactive
Mawile
I disagree with it, but what's "bad" and not are just matters of opinion and execution
tali713
unver: no, it's consequentially bad.
Mawile
mollymorphic: Odd, that sounds about right
turbofail
huh, self-insert-command shouldn't ever insert a newline
mollymorphic
Mawile: yea :/
Mawile
C-h f self-insert-command?
mollymorphic
Mawile: it's weird because sometimes it will insert a space, and then start inserting new lines
Mawile
Maybe it's advised or something?
benaiah
I feel like there's a channel-wisdom in here somewhere, but I can't pick what to use
mollymorphic
Mawile: self-insert-command is an interactive built-in function in `C source
miskatonic
it comes from "fasci", which are bundles of sticks
ryouma
afaik fascism is more than just militarization and glorifiation of security services
Mawile
mollymorphic: Aye, though does it mention anything about it being "advised"?
mollymorphic
Mawile: nope
davidw
ryouma, the wikipedia page is decent
subopt
Is there a var that says which color-theme is currently loaded?
tali713
ryouma: yes, also strong business interests.
ryouma
it's typically also internal outgroups, emphasis on symbols, close collaboration with corporations, etc., isn't it?
slugobers
how do i retain only unique items in a list (already sorted)?
ryouma
and possibly things like a coddling and channeling of angry young male thugs
unver
characterization of fascism fills textbooks, good luck with a one liner
Mawile
mollymorphic: ...that's really odd, the only thing I can think it might be is your key layout doing something wacky.
benaiah
miskatonic: which come from the roman fasces, which was a symbol of authority carried by certain roman officials
tali713
ryouma: typically, yes. a dominant religion could also be bundled in. gives more control over more aspects of life. the trains will run on time!
wgreenhouse
ryouma: those are covered too
mollymorphic
Mawile: yea I dunno, this is a virtualized ubuntu machine inside of OSX so maybe somethings going haywire there...I guess I'll try restarting the vm
wgreenhouse
ryouma: if you think about it for a minute
davidw
not just 'strong business interests', but basically melding a lot of businesses into the state
Mawile
mollymorphic: If you can catch it again, see what is in C-h l
wgreenhouse
davidw: TPP
davidw
they weren't particularly 'free market' types
wgreenhouse
davidw: which is neither free market nor democratic
Mawile
Bleh, left
turbofail
let's base all of our foreign policy on access to molybdenum
ryouma
i can't speak to military topics, but plenty of internal outgroups and close collaboration with corporations in uk and us, e.g.
benaiah
ternaries in c-like languages always make me feel icky
davidw
wgreenhouse, mmmm more like if Boeing, say, got turned into *the* aircraft manufacturer for both civilian and military aircraft, and everything else was forced to merge with it or shut down
that kind of thing
rick42
slugobers: C-h f remove-duplicates
davidw
ryouma, in actual fascist countries, you could get the crap beat out of you - or worse - by quasi-governmental thugs for having the wrong political views
Mawile
So, question, does emailing emacs-orgmode@gnu.org post to the emacs-org mailing list?
slugobers
thanks
ryouma
davidw: indeed that is a valid consideration
Mawile
(I asked on #org-mode, but that place seems as dead as Moses)
cube`
hey guys, what would be the best way to write a key-bound function that will prompt for a search query, then get http://foo.org/?q=<query>, extract only the main content (via regxp?) and then render the remaining html into a temporary buffer?
ryouma
davidw: but suppose that's not necessary much any more with a sufficiently advanced propaganda apparatus?
escondida
Mawile: http://orgmode.org/community.html
ryouma
moses lives!
Mawile
escondida: Yes, I'm looking at that
Though, I sent a patch to it yesterday and never saw it show up
escondida
Mawile: Did you subscribe first?
Mawile
So I was wondering if they were just the same name, but with different endpoints
I did not
escondida
there you go
miskatonic
orgmode is not to be confused with Oregon ... oops, stupid joke
escondida
Mawile: In that case, it either went straight to /dev/null or is awaiting moderation
Mawile
Ah, I guess that means I shouldn't post it again after signing up in case it is the latter? :s
escondida
I'd say go ahead and do so, personally
