other channels??
fsbot
Ask yourself, do you really want to know?
parsnip
(Action) finally takes a moment to check how to open in external application from ranger
legumbre
aidalgol: played TIS-100 yet?
aidalgol
legumbre: no, never even heard of it
Hm, sounds mind-bending.

SQUEEZE HIM!!
legumbre
aidalgol: yeah, it looks interesting

incal: i'm too lazy and distracted to figure out what your sentence means
incal: you're welcome to rephrase

So, anyone here use spacemacs? I can't seem to get C-j in the scratch buffer to evaluate lisp. What is the command/function that evaluates the last sexp and appends it to the buffer?
parsnip
bashed: try emacs -q to open up a vanilla instance
Nafai
bashed: You'd get better Spacemacs specific help in the gitter channel. But note, for reasons, the *scratch* buffer in Spacemacs is in Text mode, not emacs-lisp-mode.
parsnip
bashed: then do C-h k C-j in scratch
holomorph
bashed: you can easily find out in emacs -Q
bashed
Ah ok. I'll give that a try. Thanks!
incal
ryouma: sorry, I'm too busy boasting how lazy I am
ryouma
incal: hmm
parsnip
hmm, when i click on file links in org-mode, it opens with external application. it does this with emacs -q. i don't remember this being the way.
ryouma
parsnip: org has an alist, and so does browse-url
aidalgol
"Requires: .NET 2.0, running as Administrator" What the hell is your game doing that it only works when run as admin?
parsnip
ryouma: okay. but emacs -q?
ryouma
parsnip: without emacs version changing?
holomorph
wreckin' ur sh*t
parsnip
(Action) is checking in a gnu/linux emacs
aidalgol
legumbre: I tried one of his earlier puzzle games and didn't get into it. I'd love to see something like this as the "hacking" minigame within a game like Deus Ex, though.
ryouma
aidalgol: lol
aidalgol
ryouma: ?
ryouma
and you ran it?
well, i suppose you ahve to install too
parsnip
ryouma: org 8.2.10, emacs 24.5.1 on OSX, org 8.2.10, emacs 24.4.1 on Xubuntu 15.04.
emacsforosx
i guess i'll start digging into their alist now

aidalgol
ryouma: I didn't run it, no. I was quoting the system requirements on http://www.zachtronics.com/ruckingenur-ii/
ThatOtherGuy
So. In a shell, in emacs, and ssh over to another machine.
Tab completion doesn't work for folders/filenames. Information or resources you guys can point me at?
parsnip
can someone check in osx if following file links in org-mode uses external application?
aidalgol
Don't run ssh in Emacs?
akkad
ssh-agent.el helps
aidalgol
`shell', `term', and `ansi-term' are more convenience hacks than something to rely upon.
bremner
ThatOtherGuy: where is the completion failing, in the remote shell? at a guess tab is not reaching the remote shell. or the remote shell sucks
aidalgol
bremner: We don't even know how the top-level shell is being run.
bremner
(Action) looks blank
aidalgol
bremner: i.e. M-x shell or M-x term
akkad
yeah they suck so bad... and no one uses them. really?
bremner
sure, but ssh foobarhost in that window?
akkad: what makes you think suckage decreases the number of users?
madrik
I use M-x shell
akkad
ansi-term is good enough
bremner
good, glad it works for you. Personally I prefer a real terminal emulator, mainly for scrolling speed.
parsnip
hmm, #linux is quiet. any ideas where to ask about remapping the alt-right-click windows resize thingy in gnu/linux?
oh, maybe X11?
ThatOtherGuy
bremner: sorry, was afk. Yes. It's the remote shell. Works normally, just not through an emacs shell that ssh'd in
Tab complete issue if you forgot me.
bremner
ThatOtherGuy: what about C-c TAB ?
emacs is probably eating the tab
parsnip: sounds specific to a given windo manager?
ThatOtherGuy
bremner: C-c TAB is not defined.
bremner
grmbl
ThatOtherGuy: what mode (shell? eshell? ansi-term?
)
ThatOtherGuy
And like I said, the shell works with tab complete. Only fails when I use the shell to ssh, and try to autocomplete a file on remote machine
Just shell
M-x shell
parsnip
bremner: okay, but it seems it's present in so many. maybe xorg? i'm in xubuntu, but.. not sure that's right level.
bremner
ThatOtherGuy: ah, so emacs is definitely supposed to do completion then. You can see with C-h k <tab>
parsnip
bremner: gnu/linux, xorg, debian, ubuntu, xubuntu, xfce?
ThatOtherGuy
bremner: I think it's because emacs doesn't know about the files on the remote machine. Not sure how to tell it about them though.
bremner
parsnip: xfce, I'd guess. or xubuntu if it has a reasonable support group
ThatOtherGuy
bremner: just confirmed. When in the SSH session, emacs can auto complete my LOCAL files, like it's still in the same place, but doesn't complete the remote (through ssh) files because it doesn't see them
bremner
ThatOtherGuy: yeah, I can't see offhand how to make it work with M-x shell, but I'm only an occasional user. You could use M-x term instead for a different set of tradeoffs
ThatOtherGuy
I'm open to change. What kind of tradeoffs are we talking? I literally only need basic system commands and ssh from it.
bremner
ThatOtherGuy: it's harder to send keys to emacs in M-x term, you have to use some escape key to switch back. So for me, I'd just as soon give key commands to the window manager. YMMV
Woodi
hi ! is it possible to edit html in WYSIWYG fashion in emacs ?
bremner
not really
parsnip
ryouma: getting further now. C-h k RET gives me org-return, which next significant command appears to be org-open-at-point, which for instance tells me C-u RET will open with emacs. this is my quick fix for now in osx. funny that it behaves differently in osx and gnu/linux.
Woodi
brandon-: thanx
bremner: you too :)
parsnip

No, it's trivial!
ryouma
parsnip: open xdg-open
parsnip
ryouma: huh? you mean look inside xdg-open in gnu/linux?
ryouma
parsnip: look at the alists!
parsnip
okay
ryouma: you mean the dired guess shell alists?
but emacs -q?
ryouma
parsnip: no
parsnip
i apropos'd for org alist, didn't see anything for applications
