jlf: use -Y instead of -X ?!
(not sure if i understood your real issue)
kovrik
hi everyone! I'm getting the following error when trying to create a stash in magit 2.1: 'apply: Spawning child process: exec format error'. How to fix it?
snacktoa
has anyone found a fix for weird powerline colors around triangles on OSX
im using zenburn which seems like it should have colors set for powerline
jlf
cluck: same result
cluck
jlf: not sure what's your issue then
jlf
ssh -Y lux.local -> jlf@lux:~$ sudo rxvt -> [sudo] password for jlf: -> X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication. -> urxvt: can't open display localhost:10.0, aborting.
mdupont
bremner , that works! ctrl-g

anyone remember tricks to modify C-s searching as you go?
offby1: maybe?
mshroyer
parsnip: see help for isearch-forward; this documents that M-r toggles regex mode, M-c toggles case sensitivity, etc.

parsnip
Ah, for example, C-M-w is useful. Often I want to modify with DEL, but first that takes me back through recent hits.
M-s e also
... will put cursor to edit back in minibuffer to edit search string.
mshroyer: thank you
aidalgol
rudybot: wgreenhouse
rudybot
aidalgol: what movie is that screenie from wgreenhouse?
aidalgol
rudybot: seen wgreenhouse
rudybot
aidalgol: wgreenhouse was seen joining in #emacs eight hours ago, and then wgreenhouse was seen quitting eight hours ago, saying "Ping timeout: 256 seconds"

Is it only me or wsj.com (The Wall Street Journal) is hacked....because it's redirecting to shirtcity..a store for tshirts!
aidalgol
Is there something like an interactive version of scp?
jlf
sftp?
baelor
aidalgol: http://xuanji.appspot.com/isicp/
woops
nvm
aidalgol
HAHA!
mshroyer
antimass: am reading wsj.com right now, not seeing that on my end
antimass
perhaps problem with my ISP then...
aidalgol
jlf: Oh, hey, noice! I thought that was just a protocol, and you had to use something like lftp, which leaves you with all the crap normal FTP commands.
and all their quirks

jlf: Where would I need to start digging to figure out whether the Novena's FPGAs could be used to create a SATA interface?
jlf
aidalgol: i'd look at the fpga documentation linked from http://www.kosagi.com/w/index.php?title=Novena_PVT_Components and the schematic at http://bunniefoo.com/novena/pvt2_release/SCH-novena_pvt2.PDF
"Separate point-to-point AC-coupled LVDS links are used for physical transmission between host and drive."
there might even be a spare lvds interface on the board, but if not it should be feasible via the gpbb, though perhaps constrained to lower data rates depending on signal integrity
Nick_E
hey guys
aidalgol
AC-coupled? How does it do that when the board's power input is DC?
Nick_E
is there a way to have emacs not change the default-directory every single time I open a file?

aidalgol
Oscillator somewhere on the board?
Nick_E
i use "make" to trigger a build, but if I open a file in a subdir, emacs doesn't find the Makefile
jlf
aidalgol
Nick_E: `default-directory' is buffer-local, and *should* be set to the directory of the file associated with the buffer. It also makes sense because subdirs in a project often have their own Makefiles. I suggest keeping the Makefile open in a buffer, and switch to that before running M-x compile
Nick_E
thanks
aidalgol
Maybe define a key-macro to switch to the buffer.
Nick_E
i just read this http://emacswiki.org/emacs/CompileCommand
aidalgol
*more quickly
Nick_E
which left me with the same conclusion
aidalgol
...or you could use the code snippet under the "Running Make with the closest Makefile" heading on that page. :P
Nick_E
well
im not sure if that'll use the default-directory as the output dir
which would suck
aidalgol
hmm, yeah, looks like it
it doesn't cd to the location of the Makefile it found.
Nick_E
isn't there some way to set a anchor point for things like make, regardless of which buffer I have open
offby1
parsnip: about the only way I modify an active isearch is by yanking the rest of the word, or the line. The keybinding for the latter changed in (I think) emacs 24; it used to be C-y but is now Alt+Shift+Cokebottle+StandOnLeftFoot+i or something
aidalgol
Nick_E: Maybe with one of the project-oriented packages.
All of those suck, IMO, but then I hate IDEs with a passion.
Nick_E
agree, which is why i've recently switched over to emacs
how do you feel about evil-mode ?
aidalgol
Never tried it.
turbofail
there's nothing wrong with IDE's in principle. i just haven't figured out how to use them
Nick_E
im fairly new to emacs and really couldn't find love for the key bindings
aidalgol
jlf: If I'm reading the FPGA datasheet right, it can't manage anywhere near the speeds of SATA3.
offby1
Nick_E: it helps to be experienced with 40-year-old operating systems
Nick_E: occasionally people try to modernize the bindings, but those efforts never go anywhere, as far as I know.
jlf
aidalgol: you're almost certainly not :)
aidalgol
jlf: wouldn't surprise me
I'm looking at page 1 of http://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/data_sheets/ds160.pdf
Nick_E
offby1: helps to have a 40 year old keyboard as well, from what I've read
aidalgol
Nick_E: not just old, but a *particular type* of old keyboard
or an ergodox
Nick_E
aidalgol: yep, thats what i mean
aidalgol
jlf: "Up to 1,080 Mb/s data transfer rate per differential I/O"
Nick_E: Or go into denial, and become a follower of ergomac, and espouse its wonder.
Seriously though, stay the hell away from ,,starter-kits,,
fsbot
[->] starter-kit is [0] See https://github.com/technomancy/emacs-starter-kit for an explanation of why you shouldn't use a starter kit
[1] see also better-defaults
Nick_E
aidalgol: i'm loving evil mode
aidalgol
yeah, that seems to be a popular one, and not just among ex-vimmers.
jlf
aidalgol: check the following category
Nick_E
i feel like i'm cheating myself out of the "authentic" emacs experience
but then, I quickly talk myself out of that silly though
offby1
Nick_E: All I know is how _I_ learned, which was with sticks and rocks and grunting. We didn't have no starter kits back in the 19th century
aidalgol
jlf: "High-speed GTP serial transceivers in the LXT FPGAs"?
jlf
almost there.....
Nick_E
offby1: I grew up on DOS, so it was PC-standard at that point
i'm staying away from "starter-kits" but definitely needed something so I dont end up with this "emacs-pinky"
jlf
High-speed interfaces including: Serial ATA, Aurora,
1G Ethernet, PCI Express, OBSAI, CPRI, EPON, GPON, DisplayPort, and XAUI
aidalgol
Oh, OK. :P
So is that saying it already has those interfaces in hardware, or...
brb
offby1
Nick_E: I wouldn't worry about "emacs pinky". Maybe turn your caps lock key into a control key.
Nick_E: I've been emacsing for 30 years(!) on a couple of different kinds of keyboards, and have never had any hand or wrist trouble. (And I'm just the sort of whiner who would.)
ryouma
whining does not make you sick
Nick_E
maybe i'll try that
can you do that just in emacs, or do I have to mangle my OS X ?
