barx: No, they report exactly the same.
barx
huh
bremner
prolly the usual MacOS hijinx with not finding binaries
ivan_n
Specifically, "GNU Emacs 24.3.1 (x86_64-apple-darwin, NS apple-appkit-1038.36) of 2013.03.12 on bob.porkrind.org".
ryouma
(Action) wonders what proportion of humans are not animalists
ivan_n
Is there some way I can add this to the status line of the dock-started one, regardless?
wasamasa
blackwind_123: there is a place where you can run the original TECO emacs
blackwind_123: and it's for free :P
bremner
ivan_n: M-: (executable-find "git")
legumbre
offby1: seen this yet? https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/431908798/send-idle-words-to-antarctica

ivan_n: if that reports nil, ask a mac person how to fix the exec-path
wasamasa
(Action) is sad M-x term is too slow to do the telnet nyan cat
it would have been awesome to have it with the modeline nyan cat
blackwind_123
wasamasa : which location...?
wasamasa
blackwind_123: see the first paragraph of http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/TecoEmacs
kovrik
ivan_n: to fix exec-path on OS X install package 'exec-path-from-shell'
wasamasa
blackwind_123: I dunno about you, but I find history pretty interesting
slugobers
is there any way to restrict which text C-s searches in? sort of like "invisible", but "unsearchable"
benaiah
blackwind_123: I use a Digital Ocean VPS to do what you're talking about. I've been very happy with it so far
slugobers: you can use narrowing
try M-x narrow-to-region with a selection of what you want to search in
slugobers
benaiah: not quite. imagine a dired buffer with lots of files, where you want to find a number in a filename. however, filesize and modification date will get in the way
you cannot restrict because filenames don't form a single region
benaiah
slugobers: in that specific scenario you can just use dired-details-hide
and then search
I don't know of a more general solution
avshalom
blackwind_123: vultr.com has been treating me well. you can also upload a custom ISO with whatever operating system you wish
benaiah
(Action) is sad M-x term is
slugobers
benaiah: nice, i didn't know that. but anyway, this was just an example, so i'd need a generic solution, if it exists
blackwind_123
avshalom : benaiah : tnx for input
taylanub
day 2 of *very* low carbs (and probably low calories as a result because I just can't eat enough fat): feeling absolutely fu*king horrible. might give up, depending on how I feel tomorrow; I'm also cycling 23km to work and back every day this week and it might get unbearable. 22:35 and I'm going to bed because too tired. ;_;
blackwind_123
slugobers : what you are trying to do with dired mode and file name matching...?
wasamasa
benaiah: that got cut off
slugobers
blackwind_123: it was just an example to illustrate what i would need
benaiah
wasamasa: no it didn't

turbofail
wat. if you're cycling 23km you need carbs
wasamasa
benaiah: .___.
benaiah
wasamasa: I just don't like M-x term
NemesisD
so the org-mode docs say that C-c / d should be bound to org-check-deadlines but it isn't. i tried to bind it via: (define-key org-mode-map (kbd "C-c / d") 'org-check-deadlines and got "Key sequence C-c / d starts with non-prefix key C-c /"
wasamasa
benaiah: maybe someone will write something binary and an emacs mode to speak to it
benaiah: and then we'll have a fast-enough terminal emulator in emacs
Oejet
taylanub: Are you on a diet?
benaiah
wasamasa: you could call the binary part a "shell" and the emacs mode a "term...
wait a sec
wasamasa
...
benaiah
I do find it a little amusing that nearly every idea I get to improve emacs involves writing a separate binary and communicating with it
cluck
wasamasa: run gnu screen as your shell (seriously)
wasamasa
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/kmscon/libtsm/
cluck: I need more than nethack-style error messages
benaiah: maybe once modules are there...
cluck
wasamasa: gnu screen can be configured to not draw some content when scrolling above a certain speed
gnomon
taylanub, that's a tough row to hoe - the carb avoidance thing, I mean, less the cycling. When did you start?
NemesisD
nm i've got it
benaiah
wasamasa: modules?
wasamasa
benaiah: yes
cluck
wasamasa: gnu screen can also be configured to act on certain content (ie scripted behavior)
wasamasa
benaiah: there is FFI for calling single C functions and there are modules for writing extensions to emacs in C
benaiah: the latter is more bothersome as you'll need to write the same kind of C as in emacs, but it avoids recompiling emacs itself
benaiah: quotemstr is working on it
cluck
wasamasa: emacs with screen is almost a top of the line term
benaiah
wasamasa: ah, nice. It's pretty ungoogleable (no thanks to erc's use of the word "module" to mean something totally different)
wasamasa
benaiah: somewhere on emacs-devel...
benaiah
cluck: I use emacs inside of tmux
cluck
benaiah: meh
benaiah
it's pretty nice except that terminals have really sh*tty keyboard support
wasamasa
uhuh
benaiah
cluck: why do you dislike tmux?
bremner
it's not GNU!?!!1!!11!!!
benaiah
cf. ,,benaiah-terminal-fix
fsbot
Keyboard shortcuts in the terminal can usually be fixed by losing all hope and drinking yourself to death.
wasamasa
it's actively developed!!!??
fsbot
Improbable
parsnip
i just use it cuz the pretty green trim
ivan_n
kovrik: Thank you, took some fiddling but that did the trick!
bremner: Thanks for the pointer.
cluck
benaiah: because it's halfassed crap written by people that seem to have never used a term/multiplexer seriously
parsnip
let's solve it with a one-liner or give up
cluck: hmm, interesting, can you be more specific??
fsbot
Yes
bremner
ivan_n: glad it worked out.
parsnip
,mouth-to-mouth fsbot
fsbot
parsnip, Maybe your life has something to do with this.
benaiah
cluck: yeah but it can split vertically
wasamasa
benaiah: you know, there is a solution to the keybinding suckiness
benaiah
wasamasa: there is?
wasamasa
benaiah: never wondered why vim got no meta-keybindings?
cluck
benaiah: and fwiw i like gnu but i'm not an extremist (this message sent from emacs_w32)
blaenk
anyone know how to reset a single file in magit-status?
wasamasa
benaiah: in other words, being as conservative as vim when it comes to keybindings
cluck
benaiah: yes, it can
bremner
cat has no problem with keybindings
cluck
benaiah: even without patches
benaiah
wasamasa: "don't do that" isn't really a "solution" to "I want to do this and it doesn't work"
cluck
benaiah: youneed better trolling matterial
parsnip
ironically, i saw a cat attacking the mouse pointer yesterday
JordiGH
Man, I really dig this thinkpad, exceeeeeept, the right modifier keys are all slightly on the wrong position. They're all a few cm more left than they should be. My fingers keep pressing the wrong buttons.
wasamasa
benaiah: well, it works pretty well for a text editor most of its user base is using in the terminal
benaiah: just saying
benaiah
cluck: I'm not actually trolling, that's just what I ran into using screen. if there's a better version of screen that I missed then my bad
