benaiah
taylan: you say after announcing it in all caps
holomorph
taylan: DON'T CHANGE MY DEFAULTS
benaiah
taylan: you've gone from a cheery blue to a muddy brownish gray
timthelion
taylan: getting a legal name change on IRC is almost as racy as changing your sex I guess.
benaiah
irc is legal?
taylan
legal name change on IRC .. wot :D
offby1
timthelion: judging both by time zone and behavior
JordiGH
Whoa, am I now a bigot for wanting the ub?

timthelion
taylan: you are now a registered ____
taylan
timthelion: huh?
timthelion
offby1: Prague
Digit
there are ilegal names? too sexually explicit or something? ^_^
offby1
timthelion: people of course do drink here, but singing and smashing up cars just says "soccer" to me
timthelion
offby1: by george, it should say "footbal"!
benaiah
Digit: not afaik on irc, though you'd probably get banned from a lot of channels if you picked a nasty enough one and were active
s/irc/freenode/
Digit
i shant /nick smegeye then
timthelion
taylan: you have a registered nick...
taylan
timthelion: I have taylan and taylanub registered, yes... always had the latter.
wasamasa
Digit: "di*ks" got banned pretty quickly on #archlinux-offtopic
benaiah
(Action) may have to up his font size after running out of contacts
wasamasa
who would have thought
nzst
wasamasa: how unpunk
benaiah
doesn't him getting banned make it more punk
wasamasa
yes it does
there's still quotegrabs for it
benaiah
quotegrabs?
wasamasa
like, "* di*ks jumping all around"
nzst
i suppose so, benaiah
taylan
"Dick" is a real name though, isn't it? oh, Dick Cheney, heh.
most fitting name of the century

wasamasa
benaiah: it's like a manual variant of rudybot
benaiah: you can record someone's silliness on the #archlinux* channels with !grab nick
benaiah
wasamasa: ah, I see
Fuco
taylan: Dick is short for Richard
taylan
Fuco: wow, that makes a lot of sense ... not
rudybot: Dick Stallman?
rudybot
taylan: well, do you have a di*k and a blender?
nzst
lol, god no
Fuco
taylan: Like 'Bill' meaning 'William'?
taylan
I had no idea of that either O_o
Fuco
(that actually makes sense ^)
taylan
if you're Japanese and pronounce v/w as b maybe?
Fuco
yes, but it's not exported from japan
taylan
no, that would be Biru
forcer
"Lautverschiebung", whatever that is in English
Fuco

forcer
Tonal shift?
Fuco

taylan
ok, I can understand William -> Will -> Bill, but how come Rich-- thanks
Fuco
taylan: I actually learned this from Karl May book :D There were two tramps Dick and Will, and in one book they gave their real names
I think it was at the funeral (spoiler alert)
I read it when I was 12 or so
Dick Stone and WIll Parker
(Action) nostalgia'd

eshell was created in a fit of rage when someone realized cmd.exe is the best terminal windows has to offer
taylan
s/terminal/shell/ but w/e
Fuco
cmd.exe is also terminal
well in some sense anyway... it's not VT
benaiah
(Action) always thought cmd.exe was the terminal emulator and batch was the shell
Sketch
i think cmd.exe is both
though it barely qualifies as a terminal emulator
benaiah
it barely qualifies as a program
Sketch
well, it is a shell with a built in scripting language.
a terribly ugly, limited scripting language.
but i think it's enough to quality as a program
Fuco
Sketch: I refuse to call something a program if it can't handle non-ascii! :D
varaindemian
is emacs-prelude good for beginners? I followed the tutorial and now I want emacs for python programming and learning bash scripting. https://github.com/bbatsov/prelude
Shambles_
Fuco: I remember when batch couldn't handle basic arithmetic. Dark times.
Sketch
Fuco: python people must hate you
JordiGH
varaindemian: I'm of the opinion that you have to build your own init, not grab anyone else's.
bpalmer
Fuco: it's a program iff it (only) handles EBCDIC.
aidalgol
,tell varaindemian about starter-kits
fsbot
varaindemian: varaindemian: [->] starter-kit -- [0] See https://github.com/technomancy/emacs-starter-kit for an explanation of why you shouldn't use a starter kit
[1] see also better-defaults
Sketch
Shambles_: i was kinda surprised to see they had improved it a lot since the DOS days. it's still terrible, but it's slightly less awful.
bpalmer
otherwise, buy a real computer, kid.
Sketch
Let's declare EBCDIC the official channel encoding.
aidalgol
,EBCDIC
Shambles_
varaindemian: Starting with stock Emacs means the documentation 'works'. That will probably make the transition, which is unlikely to be especially easy at first, easier. If you need to add a mode for Python that should not be much of a problem, and may hurt you less, in terms of learning curve, than using a 'starter kit'.
fsbot
EbcdicTable: at http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/EbcdicTable
cvandusen
varaindemian: also ,,bootcamp
Shambles_
I think Emacs comes with python-mode though.
fsbot
hmm, bootcamp is [0/11] learning Emacs the hard way -- correctly
[1] bringing your own or using other people's .emacs is forbidden
[2] only 1 hour of .emacs play is allowed at the end of the day
[3] forced use of the keyboard
[4] your mouse is thrown in the garbage
[5] you will use the standard key bindings
Fuco
Shambles_: I don't remember that because I never used cmd.exe for anything other than launching git/bash :D but yes... terrible
fsbot
[6] you will use the online help, not the help online ..[Type ,more]
