wasamasa: Oh, yeah! I saw that Polandball comic today. It was so cute. And Polen was so sweet.
Fuco: Yeah, the GNU changelog format was meant for a time when we didn't have VCSes.
aidalgol
JordiGH: Any tips for a new Octave user?
JordiGH
aidalgol: One that already knows a programming language?
Or one that doesn't?
aidalgol
JordiGH: yes.
does
JordiGH
aidalgol: Beware the global namespace. It is shared by functions and variables. You can overwrite a function with a variable and get very obscure error messages. Since all variables are matrices, a(x) can be a function call or indexing.

forcer: yeah, I poked at salt a little bit too (because some nutball started using it _after_ I'd settled on ansible, and it's always good to have 12 different ways to do things); it seemed complex and fragile :-|

ryouma: Oversight is mostly postmortems on programs that are already running or have already crashed; CBO is mostly forecasting the future of programs
timthelion
Argh, I've got emacs pinky again :( Maybe I should shift my homerow to the left and use `g` for control.
aidalgol
JordiGH: thanks

forcer
offby1: I can confirm that
JordiGH
aidalgol: In particular, you can do fun things like error = 42 in the global namespace and never again see an error message.
wgreenhouse
ryouma: mostly I was just punning on the word meaning both "investigation" and "forgetful mistake"
offby1
to me, "oversight" means less "investigation" and more "supervision"
forcer
offby1: I like some of it more than ansible, but for the most part, ansible has the more straightforward usability.
offby1
on the other hand, I despise YAML
wgreenhouse
offby1: either way it's one of those word-is-its-own-antonym thingies
either supervision or what happens when there is none
taylan
THE SWITCH HAS BEEN MADE -- I'm taylan from now on
JordiGH
taylan: bring back the ub
offby1
who is this stranger?!
legumbre
uber taylan
wgreenhouse
"it was an oversight, to prevent future oversights we need more oversight"
^ perfectly valid English
offby1
(Action) nods
forcer
offby1: Oh? I have come to like YAML by now. At least I do not know of a better alternative.
aidalgol
offby1, forcer: I wanted to use ansible, but its Windows support is worse than salt's, so I'm trying to set that up now.
timthelion
taylan: does that mean I can register "tylanub" now and confuse the heck out of everyone?
forcer
aidalgol: Good luck
offby1
forcer: in theory, I like "toml" better -- but I've never actually used it
holomorph
now your color is different
taylan
timthelion: you could already do that. if you meant taylanub, I still own that.

offby1
forcer: YAML's string-escaping rules are about as nasty as the shell's
timthelion
offby1: that's the case for me as well. Toml is vaguely interesting, would be more interesting if there were parsers for it.
There are people walking down the street singing drunken songs and hitting cars. Luckly, I hate cars.
forcer
offby1: Oh? "If in doubt, use JSON" seemed rather straightforward to me
offby1
forcer: yeah, I probably should have tried that
timthelion: you must be in Europe
forcer
Succeeded: 207 Failed: 0 - salt run from scratch. I guess I can deploy to prod now.
timthelion
offby1: judging by what, the time zone? Or do people not drink where you're at?
benaiah
taylan: what is this sorcery
