benaiah: I wouldn't know, I'm a schemer after all
benaiah
I would be a schemer if I still used languages I liked
wasamasa
benaiah: but yeah, it's an error there to do (map 'foo ...)
benaiah
blech
why does map use a symbol anyway, instead of just passing in the function as a variable?
wasamasa
ok, it would be an error anyways as their map is different from scheme's map
benaiah
I feel like that's a dumb question, but I don't know why
wasamasa
or hm
I don't get an error with mapcar
maybe there's something more profound about it...

hi #emacs

benaiah: something about lisp-2
prsteele
hello isomer
isomer
how goes the battle these days?
benaiah
wasamasa: ah, right. I always forget about the lisp-2 gotchas
wasamasa
benaiah: but I'm sure someone from their camp will intervene and explain how it's all about it being industrial-strength and not a lisp-2
benaiah
rudybot: quote

hi robobr
robobr
i've been puzzling over a minor issue with emacsclient.
it seems "emacsclient -c" does a (menu-bar-mode +1) somewhere as it starts which reverses the (menu-bar-mode -1) in my init.el.
benaiah
I find it unbelievable that rudybot's database is so filled with "let's x" that "rudybot: quote" almost inevitably produces one
though I'm assuming quote pulls something at random, which I suppose might not be entirely true.
robobr: no, it's just that menu-bar-mode is frame-local IIRC
you'll need to put that in a frame start hook if so
bremner
rudybot: eval (random 10)
rudybot
bremner: your sandbox is ready
bremner: ; Value: 4
wasamasa
benaiah: I suspect it's one of its few commands actually
benaiah: not sure why some of the input gives you a help response though
benaiah
wasamasa: it must be, otherwise it would give me sentences with "quote" in them
wasamasa
robobr
i thought using before-make-frame-hook, but if i have a few "emacsclient -t" running, running an "emacsclient -c" causes the menu-mode to +1 for all clients!

benaiah
wasamasa: I see. I thought it was pulling from the same db as his normal insanity.
rudybot: you're a good bot aren't you boy
rudybot
benaiah: s/boy/bot/

,df menu-bar-mode
fsbot
menu-bar-mode is an interactive compiled Lisp function in
`menu-bar.el'.
(menu-bar-mode &optional ARG)
Toggle display of a menu bar on each frame (Menu Bar mode).
With a prefix argument ARG, enable Menu Bar mode if ARG is
positive, and disable it otherwise. If called from Lisp, enable
Menu Bar mode if ARG is omitted or nil. ..[Type ,more]

This command applies to all frames that exist and frames to be
created in the future.
benaiah
well nvm then
that is weird

so menu-bar-mode does get set correctly when starting the server. all the terminal based clients attest to that.
once a cocoa frame is made, menu-bars-start popping up everywhere.
and running (menu-bar-mode -1) in the cocoa client doesn't remove the menu-bar.
but it does in the terminal clients.
benaiah
oh, it's cocoa. I remember running inot this.
if only I could recall how I fixed ti

I'm not mad....I'm dissapointed

benaiah: do tell do tell. at least i can say i'm not insane

nzst: well some are trolling, but some, i find, actually answer questions that you did not ask because they are excited! to answer a question that they know. even if it isn't what you asked.
should be names for hose behaviors. even if we have to come up with an eponymous one based on a cartoon character or something. but nitpicker is one good word.
benaiah
robobr: I remember something about emacsclient cocoa frames not getting rid of the menu
I never got TUI+GUI frames working off the same server on os x
robobr
damn!
i am running gnu 24.5.1
benaiah
robobr: I can't find anything in my mac.el that has to do with that, though
and I don't have an OS X machine to screw around on right now
I seem to remember figuring out how to turn off the menu bar by looking around on the menu bar for an option. You could try that.
rullie
(menu-bar-mode 0) (tool-bar-mode 0) (scroll-bar-mode -1) is what i have in my .emacs and i like it that way.
robobr
benaiah: thanks. i will do that.
rullie
and i don't have a menu bar.
benaiah
(tool-bar-mode 0) might be what I was thinking of
escondida
rullie: Gotta love the consistency of the settings to disable 'em, though
wasamasa
using -1 consistently works, too
rullie
escondida: the software's older than me. i have nothing but respect towards its legacy.
didi-ng
Don't forget M-x customize
robobr
it's the cocoa client that doesn't respond to it.
escondida
wasamasa: Ah, good.
rullie: Don't put it on a pedestal, or it will never improve (-:
wasamasa
escondida: as long as the integers aren't positive...
rullie
escondida: of course, that'd be vim's mindset ;)
didi-ng
rudybot: There is not enough love for M-x customize.
rudybot
didi-ng: thanks. i just love customize :)
wasamasa
escondida: the calling convention for disabling minor modes programmatically is weird as heck, but eh
didi-ng
Good robot. Good.
wasamasa
escondida: I pretty much never need to do that
escondida
wasamasa: Yeah, I've only occasionally needed to do anything with that, thankfully

let's make rudybot require food
