By the way, I have (defun todos () (interactive) (grep-compute-defaults) (rgrep "\\<todo\\|\\<TODO\\|\\<fixme\\|\\<FIXME" "*"))
Which does essentially that.
jlf
that joke deserves severe punishment
cvandusen
ggole: I don't get it. Was that the punchline?
nmvictor
sbryant: *WEIRED ERROR* i did M-x flymake -mode and i got some dialog-like box, its width surpused my screen width of my screen so all i could read were some class path, C-m dismissed the dialog whose button i could not see, i went to *Messages* buffer and all i saw was Flymake disabled[2 time], thats not just weird to me, quite SCARY!
JordiGH
Is it even a pun? I put the accent on the last syllable of occur. Am I doing it wrong?
ggole
cvandusen: no, it was regarding nmvictor's todo idea.
JordiGH
nmvictor: ,,yow
fsbot
MMM-MM!! So THIS is BIO-NEBULATION!
legumbre
(Action) is baffled too

sbryant
nmvictor: turn the debugger on and find out what's going on
jlf
turbofail: see what you did? you've baffled everybody.
ggole
Well, he is called turbofail. Maybe we're just witnessing an outbreak of eponysteria.
nmvictor
sbryant: how do i do that?
cvandusen
debugger?! I hardly know 'er
JordiGH
See, that works.
sbryant
,toggle-debug-on-error

Try: debug tdoe

on multiple levels
legumbre
oh I see
sbryant
, tdoe
fsbot
tdoe is [0] type M-x toggle-debug-on-error RET, reproduce the problem, then lisppaste the contents of the backtrace buffer.
[1] NOTE: you dont *have* to lisppaste, just contemplating the backtrace will often give you enlightenment
turbofail
mission accomplished, it seems
cvandusen
I think Bush said that
"I'm wearing a flight suit. That must mean the mission is accomplished."
turbofail
in my office, we have competitions to see who can come up with the worst usage of "I barely know 'er"
i always win
jlf
a likely story
JordiGH
A cool story.
legumbre
(Action) ponders exile in #emacs-es
jlf
in my office it's, "damn near /killed/ 'im!"
nmvictor
sbryant: i did M-x debug, then tried turing flymake on which obviously failed, revisited the *backtrace* buffer and i was just as i had left it, any chance i could resize this dialog and read it?

JordiGH
legumbre: I keep forgetting that place exists.
legumbre
JordiGH: we should not forget
jlf
#emacs-es: #emacs with more upside-down punctuation
sbryant
nmvictor: drag the mode line or the gutters/
JordiGH
¿!¿¡WHAT YOU SAY?!?!
jlf
¡si!
(Action) wonders if there's an upside-down interrobang
cvandusen
how did you turn your keyboard upside down while typing that?

,df kill-whole-line
fsbot
kill-whole-line is an interactive compiled Lisp function in
`simple.el'.
It is bound to <C-S-backspace>.
(kill-whole-line &optional ARG)
Kill current line.
With prefix ARG, kill that many lines starting from the current line.
If ARG is negative, kill backward. Also kill the preceding newline. ..[Type ,more]
Gryllida
ok
JordiGH
CrazyEddy: C-S-<backspace>
It's the best thing ever and I can't believe it took me this long to discover it.
legumbre
ok, I'll say it. I find that 'dd' entry offensive.
leo2007
climacs didn't really take off I think because of its buggy slow redisplay engine.
nmvictor

Why would OS X jump to to space 5 whenever I hover over a modeline?
Gryllida
I type 'C' and it writes 'C'
cvandusen
Gryllida: C is Control key
legumbre
Gryllida: that means control+shift+backspace
sbryant
nmvictor: uh, that makes very little sense to me.
jlf
thunk: "space"?
Gryllida
^C-S-RET is ok

how do I delete a paragraph I'm currently in?
jlf
oh, /me forgot spaces existed
Gryllida
...
ggole
,df mark-paragraph
fsbot
mark-paragraph is an interactive compiled Lisp function in
`paragraphs.el'.
It is bound to M-h.
(mark-paragraph &optional ARG ALLOW-EXTEND)
Put point at beginning of this paragraph, mark at end.
The paragraph marked is the one that contains point or follows point. ..[Type ,more]
ggole
Gryllida: that, then C-d
nmvictor
sbryant: i did C-h f mouse-drag-mode-line and I saw,in red: <color=red>[This function is adviced]</color>
ggole
(or C-w if you might want to get it back later)
Gryllida
M-h C-d just deletes next char
awe
it switches me to another buffer
ggole
Did you change your key bindings?
Gryllida
C-h C-d switches me to another buffer, M-h C-d deletes next char, I didn't change anything
ggole
Hmm
jlf
Gryllida: you know that M- means meta (typically the Alt key) right?
ggole
Maybe that's a setting of mine... one moment
Gryllida
right
ggole
Ah, I have delete-selection mode on
Either turn that on, or use C-w
Gryllida
C-w works
Astrobe
so ok I got fetchmail that connects to the mail account, but it insists on sending it to an MDA using SMTP. W.H.Y. don't you just put that sh_t there, man?
ggole
Gryllida: C-w is actually cut, not delete.
But it does the job.
cvandusen
cut??
fsbot
I'm telling you, you don't want to know.
ggole
Cut. As in, the universally understood term for what emacs calls "kill".
jlf
emacs, i wanna kill!! kill!!! see dead, obsolete code in my kill-ring! kill!!
ggole
Hmm, text editing sounds kind of violent.
Gryllida
ggole, cut is ok since the text no longer exists ; and I'm able to paste it if the deletion was accidental as well.
ggole
(Action) nods
cvandusen
it's kill or be killed
ggole
Gryllida: if it was accidental you can always get it back with undo
,df undo
fsbot
undo is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `simple.el'.
It is bound to C-/, <undo>, C-_, <menu-bar> <edit> <undo>.
Gryllida
right
fsbot
(undo &optional ARG)
Undo some previous changes.
Repeat this command to undo more changes.
A numeric ARG serves as a repeat count. ..[Type ,more]
cvandusen
sometimes called "unkill"
Gryllida
yay , this shortcut works as well
cvandusen
:)
Gryllida
can emacs run in terminal instead of gui window in x11?
ggole
Yeah, emacs -nw
Gryllida
ok, I'll try to use it in terminal and learn these keyboard shortcuts
JordiGH
They're called keybindings.
Gryllida
Okay.
JordiGH
It's a window; it's a frame.
It's not a window, but a frame, that is.
It's not word-wrap, but auto-fill.
ggole
JordiGH: stop confusing the newbies.
JordiGH
Etc.
Astrobe

Gryllida
Feel free, it's difficult to confuse me
ggole
JordiGH: continue confusing the newbies.
JordiGH
Gryllida: If I may interject for a moment, what you're ferring to as Linux is more accurately as GN+Linux, or as I've taken to calling it, GNU/Linux.
Gryllida
:-P
legumbre

Astrobe
ggole: what? you call me noob?
ggole
Astrobe: nope.

Given the available technology, forcing everyone on a plane to watch the same movie is archaic
and when I say "archaic", you know what I mean
legumbre
cvandusen: where's your sense of community?
