legumbre
let's borrow a ferrari
vivien_
Well, I also have a precise question... If I type a word (command) under a terminal, and then press M-backspace to erase it, the word disapears, but if I press RET, the command is executed anyway.
Something like: "ls M-backspace RET" will run "ls" also it does not appear on the line anymore.
stepnem
sounds like a nice bug
vivien_
s/also/although
stepnem
vivien_: if it doesn't happen in the terminal you use in multi-term, you prolly have to report it to the multi-term maintainer (certain ahei)
vivien_
stepnem: Thanks. Sure, I will report.
I might be banned for that :) , but I would like to know what multi-term users think about it, or past users that were not satisfied....
stepnem
I never tried it, so, dunno...
vivien_
The good point is that it behaves almost exactly as a terminal. You can launch top, less, alsamixer, ...
stepnem
well, AFAIK it only makes the standard Emacs terminal emulators "more convenient" to use -- some switching commands etc.
I haven't looked at the code, neither have I used it, but I guess that's about it :-)

vivien_
Yes, it is like M-x term
with improvements. It is more convenient than M-x shell or M-x eshell, in my opinion. But I have not played long enough with it, so...
ysph
there is also a multi-eshell that operates in similar fashion
stepnem
that it caused the bug you describe above is interesting, but well, anything is possible with elisp libraries, only more so when written by Andy I guess
but did you actually confirm it doesn't happen w/o multi-term?
vivien_
Actually I have just found the problem originates from M-x term itself, which is built-in
stepnem
haha, there we go
vivien_
:P
stepnem
you use ansi-term or what?
vivien_
I do not know. M-x term simply.
M-x ansi-term has the same issue
Riviera
Aren't they the same?
stepnem
hm... I can't confirm that
Riviera: in current Emacs they are I think
vivien_: what shell do you use?
vivien_
Here, they look the same. The Emacs wiki claims M-x term has no colors, but it has here
stepnem: Bash
Maybe the problem comes from my prompt, although it is not complex.
stepnem
hm, no; it works alright here
vivien_
No, even PS1= gives the same problem
stepnem
what Emacs version?
and, did you try with emacs -Q?
vivien_
Emacs 23.1.1, from Ubuntu 10.04
Yes, good idea. Should have done that already
No problem with emacs -q
stepnem
then it's YOUR problem :-P
vivien_
I guess so! :) Well, at the moment at least!
Thanks
The problem is in multi-term. Once it is launched, it contaminates term and ansi-term. I reported the bug.
stepnem
wonderful
ggole
Mmm, magit is pretty nice.
stepnem
indeed, particularly with current trunk's Emacs

vivien_
ggole: confirmed
stepnem: what is new in the trunk in magit?
stepnem
vivien_: not in Magit, but in Emacs
vivien_
Ooops, magit is not part of Emacs yet. Forgot
stepnem
certain cunning changes to terminal handling seem to have made Magit unusable
s/terminal/process/
vivien_
BTW, are there plans for asynchronous TRAMP? and asynchronous GNUS calls (sendmail...)?
I hate those calls that freeze the whole emacsclient...
stepnem
in Emacs there are plans for a lot of things :-)); and yes, these are some of them
JordiGH
Man, why did xah lee call us tech geekers what the fu*k motherfu*k for whitespace-mode?
stepnem
oh, those plans
JordiGH
(Action) kinda loves whitespace-mode.
damd
JordiGH: what did you say xah lee said about whitespace-mode?
my brain caught a SyntaxError exception when reading that
e1f
ah yes, the infamous emacs planning committee bureau cabal department
yonkeltron
yes
legumbre
no
stepnem
note that cabal is NOT the same as cabal-install!
e1f
did you know that when they meet, they wear fur hats with gnu horns on them
stepnem
like the apprentice in OGLAF?
AimHere
When emacs users meet, they sacrifice a vi-user to Beelzebub
jlf
is there an actual gnu lapel/hat pin out there in the world?
as seen in ,,che
fsbot
[Too many DB matches] [google] http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/ErBotItalian
http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/LanguageIdentification
jlf
fsbot
created.
e1f
hmmm... a gnu lapel pin doesn't make sense as most emacs users wear t-shirts
unless tshirts have lapels
but that's not a bad idea
JordiGH
jlf: I prefer: http://jordi.platinum.linux.pl/piccies/tux-guevera.png
e1f
we can sell t-shirts with lapels and then sell lapel pins
Sketch
JordiGH: 404
stepnem
The requested URL /piccies/tux-guevera.png was not found on this server.
Sketch
shouldn't that be tux-gnuevara
JordiGH
stepnem

JordiGH
lolz
e1f
there's a company called kingpins in canada that makes lapel pins
JordiGH
e1f: Happy syrup/beaver day.
jlf
e1f: they'd go nice on backpacks/laptop cases
or beards
ggole
,rainbow
fsbot
hmm, rainbow-mode is [0] http://julien.danjou.info/rainbow-mode.html
[1] <3
ggole
Such an obvious idea now that somebody has gone and done it.
johnw
haha, that is so true
(Action) slaps head
this is brilliant
i love simple ideas like this that everyone should have thought of 30 years ago
ggole
Yeah, it has that feeling of rightness to it.
JordiGH
It's the best thing ever.
e1f
there were no colours 30 years ago. the world was black and white
JordiGH
It works awesomely for doing CSS.
e1f
you were lucky to have grey
leo2007
because programmers don't write css.
johnw
ok, true
JordiGH
leo2007: :<
johnw
in 86 I had color, but it wasn't terribly common
e1f
that guy also wrote the google maps mode
JordiGH
Yeah.
jlf
CGA!
JordiGH
Okay, I need to scribble a signature on a PDF.
What's the latest fashion for doing that?
With commie software, kplzthx.
shabble
on an existing pdf?
JordiGH
Yeah.
jlf
gpg
shabble
hrmm
technomancy
JordiGH: xournal is what I used
shabble
I ended up doing it with photoshop and a huge amount of hassle
JordiGH
jlf: For the uneducated rabble.
shabble: I guess I can gimp it.
technomancy: alright, let me try..
Just got a job offer from a place that seems like they might actually pay me.
jlf
gpg fingerprint of something, encoded with a QR mark
shabble
you could probably do some magic with pdftk, but that'll invovle finding offsets by hand and other messy thins
JordiGH
shabble: there was some other scribbler.
shabble
I assume you have a scanned sig already?
JordiGH
No, I'm gonna sign with the touchpad.
ggole
JordiGH: are they still not paying you?
JordiGH
ggole: More like they didn't pay me again.
ggole: I stopped going there. Today I've been sending CVs. If there's no response in two more days, I'm suing.
ggole
Isn't that the same thing? Or did they pay you inbetween the two periods of not paying you?
jlf
,pdfedit
fsbot
jlf, I need a little more detail please.
jlf
,g pdfedit
fsbot
[google] http://pdfedit.petricek.net/

JordiGH
ggole: They paid me the last paycheque but only part of it, without taxes. So the taxes they should pay they want me to pay instead, I guess. Oh, and they also didn't pay for 5 days in May. And I haven't heard a peep from them this week when I was supposed to get another paycheque.
Screw this crap, gimme my money, I'm going to a different company.
ggole
Does sound pretty flaky. :/
JordiGH
They promised me a contract three weeks ago and haven't delivered either.
shabble
is this your previously ideal crypto thing?
e1f
ok, so it looks like google's purchase of ita is complete. iirc, there were a couple of people here working at ita
JordiGH
shabble: :-(
shabble
JordiGH: :/
jlf
JordiGH: you going to mention all that in your company-wide resignation email?
JordiGH
shabble: the job itself is lovely, and the workplace is great. The company that was supposed to pay me is being huge di*ks.
jlf: Haha. I don't think the others care. They are hired by a different puppet company.
e1f
iirc, theire code is done in lisp
shabble
is it through an agency or something?
JordiGH
jlf: Mexican companies do a weird dance of creating puppet companies to get taxed less. I think they do this so that they can declare that the hiring company isn't making any profits and the actual company has no employees to give benefits to.
shabble: Yeah, I guess it's an agency or something.
jlf
strange that the company is tolerating that though as the turnover and associated costs must be very high
ggole
e1f: yeah, ita are a big CL shop.
I wouldn't have picked them to be eaten by Google.
technomancy
probably the largest CL shop?
johnw
someone should buy them and then rewrite it in C, just to make Paul happy
jlf
johnw: more likely python
following norvig's trajectory
e1f
pretty sure rahul was one of them
holy crap, he founded symbolics?
JordiGH
technomancy: That worked pretty nicely: http://jordi.platinum.linux.pl/piccies/Screenshot-1.png
johnw
then they can blog forever about how awesome CL is, despite the fact even still nobody is using it
jlf
e1f: who?
technomancy
(Action) signs for JordiGH's credit card
JordiGH
Haha.
It's so stupid we still accept signatures as legally valid.
It's even stupider that anything is a valid signature.
You can still do an X if you want, can't you?
mstr
(Action) uses JordiGH's signature to sign a confession about kicking neighbours dog
JordiGH
mstr: D:
e1f
jlf: rahul jain
johnw
i think you can only do an X if you've always done an X
cluck
johnw: those are not mutually exclusive you know, just like a product can be crap but still be used by 90% of the population despite the existence of alternatives
e1f
there's no way the cofounder of symbolics would be hanging out on #emacs
johnw
he also hangs out in #lisp to cleanse the taint
jlf
e1f: not according to http://danweinreb.org/blog/rebuttal-to-stallmans-story-about-the-formation-of-symbolics-and-lmi
e1f
i'm not seeing any google hits for his name and symbolics
jlf
the only names i recognize on that list are tom knight, david moon, and dan weinreb
e1f
yeah, i can see him hanging out on #lisp, because it's mostly clever people there
there was only a single document which is no longer on the web with those keywords and the google cache has been wiped
hosted on cl-user.net
jlf
archive.org?
sako
any python developers that are on emacs?
cluck
,ask
fsbot
I think ask is [0] Go ahead and ask :-) ... and some one will try to help.. if not right now, whenever they happen to wander over to the computer
[1] don't ask to ask and don't ask if someone has or can. Just ask your question and everybody will be happy ;-)
sako
i am currently using textmate, i wanted to make the switch
JordiGH
sako: ,,anyone
fsbot
Please do not ask if anyone uses, knows, is good with, can help you with <some program or library>. Instead, ask your real question and someone will answer if they can help.
sako
i apologize
JordiGH
sako: It works pretty nicely for me.
johnw
people just love to invoke ,,ask
fsbot
ask is, like, [0] Go ahead and ask :-) ... and some one will try to help.. if not right now, whenever they happen to wander over to the computer
[1] don't ask to ask and don't ask if someone has or can. Just ask your question and everybody will be happy ;-)
johnw
should I ,,ask about ask too?
fsbot
From memory, dlgs-phrases is [0] Property is theft! (Pierre-Joseph Proudhon)
[1] Freedom without Socialism is privilege and injustice. Socialism without freedom is slavery and brutality. (Michael Bakunin),
[2] Freedom is always the freedom of the one who thinks differently (Rosa Luxemburg), ..[Type ,more]

however the google search blurb has an ellipsis between the relevant bits "Programmer and independent Lisp consultant. Rahul Jain .... Co-Founder of Symbolics, Inc. Currently working at ITA Software"
sako
JordiGH got any tips for productivity?
JordiGH
Isn't symbolics the guys who closed up Macsyma?
