rolando
jordanb: it wasn't that game
jordanb: but soccer only has one ball in play
Sketch
jordanb: hockey? or is that curling?
jordanb
hockey is soccer on ice with a puck, yeah
rolando
and more fighting
jordanb
curling is this bizzare canadian game involving brooms and rocks.
Yeah, and fighting
Sketch
that's what i thought
jbms
Does the fighting happen in private games?
or is it just for entertainment value?
Sketch
i think it's like semi-sactioned cheating
jordanb
I think it comes with the canadian beer

Sketch
sanctioned
you can cheat, as long as you don't do it too much
jbms
Sketch: the fighting doesn't really influence the game, though, does it?
legumbre
rolando: http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/media/11627/1/11.jpg
Sketch
jbms: i think so
jordanb
actually I think soccer has a lot more fighting than hockey, it's just that with the latter, it's the players who do it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fighting_in_ice_hockey
Sketch
jbms: but the only ice hockey i've ever played was in 2d on an 8-bit computer, so my views may not be representative of real hockey
rolando
legumbre: that's the game
legumbre
(Action) used to play that game too
rolando
I had that game on my knockoff NES
those that come with 120 games or something, but 99% of them are hacks to a game
ashawley
Shouldn't pop-to-mark-command automatically push a mark in case you want to go back?
rolando
I had one that was like Super Mario Bros, but where the Mario was flying :P
legumbre
but my favorite sports game was Goal! 2
ashawley
What do other people do?
C-SPC before hitting C-u C-SPC?
jordanb
How do you know you're on IRC? A discussion of sports ends up as a discussion of NES.
jbms
I'm busy reading about Fighting_in_ice_hockey...
rolando
I'm busy researching how to cook rissoto rice
(Action) takes a look at M-x display-time-world
when is Knuth going to announce that he cracked the P=NP problem?
kodein
I can't say that I like risotto very much, but I guess some people like it
no, W3C is adapting TeX as HTML6.
rolando
kodein: my mother is going to try and cook some
this should be an enlightening experience
kodein
oh
well, good luck
rolando
10 minutes to Knuth speech
(Action) notices that Flyspell accepts Knuth as a word

technomancy
rolando: oh, it's not 5:30 pacific?
rolando
maybe he'll announce more volumes of TAOCP
technomancy: not sure
I was checking his website, but it doesn't say
if it's pacific, it's still 3 hours left
technomancy
he lives on the west coast, I think
rolando
It's possible
jbms
Sketch: it seems that the fighting has only a very slight effect on the normal hockey game itself
AimHere
5:30pm Local time
rolando
my college has the first 3 books of taocp
AimHere
And he lives in Stanford, wherever that is
rolando
I picked up one...
I went all O_o
well I still have a couple more decades of life to understand the books
AimHere
They're not inscrutable, really. Just dense
cluck
kodein: i doubt that, it'd be coming late by now (ie latexlab.org among others already do it, indirectly at least ;)
e1f
i wonder if the image caption is a typo or intentional http://1x.com/?viewpic=34720
kodein
rolando: they're already announced, really.
it seems the next volume is soon at hand
AimHere
Well the original plan was seven volumes
He seems to be down to 5 now
kodein
but the announcement might be who's going to write them after he will no longer be able to
AimHere
It might be TeX-related
e1f
or he's found a way to write them from THE BEYOND
kodein
AimHere: it's quite likely, as it's a TeX con
rolando
AimHere
They're going to freeze him Disney-style
rolando
kodein: I was saying that he would announce MORE books
as in "7 is not enough, let's aim for 10"
kodein
LaTeX 3 needs to happen ;)
jbms
It may just be that he found a minor error in one of the fonts
rolando
or maybe he'll place the TAOCP on the public domain, or in a copyleft licence
AimHere
Maybe he's just discovered Visual BASIC .NET and wants to spread the Good News
rolando
...well it would be earthshaking announcement :P
kodein
would it shake the earth?
rolando
kodein: there is only one way to find out
AimHere
Maybe it's a funny joke speech that has something to do with the San Andreas Fault
kodein
AimHere: C# instead of MMIX?
jbms
It doesn't seem like something worth me heading over to that hotel (I live in Berkeley which is only about a 30 minute train ride away)
AimHere
Announcing Microsoft Visual Studio MMIX
I'd travel 30 minutes to see Knuth speak
kodein
better be at the epicenter of earthshakingness?
vinjacob
how do I grow this frame?
kodein
yeah, I'm pretty sure I would too
give it lots of nourishment.
rolando
I would need something like a couple of hours to arrive there
kodein
then talk to your window manager
jbms
If it weren't a TUG, I'd definitely be inclined to go
but frankly a TeX announcement just doesn't sound that exciting
vinjacob
an inch or so more, would print the time on the same line.
AimHere
If he announces TeX version 3.2 that has profound consequences for all of Mathematics
kodein
vinjacob: you want to resize the window or the frame?
vinjacob: because I think you're confused about the terms
Astrobe
,scrolling-modeline
fsbot
nhak
how should i configure to automatically break the line when there are e.g more than 80 characters?
rolando
crap I forgot to place my writeroom code on github...
I need to go to the other computer
quidnunc
nhak: auto-fill-mode
jbms
nhak: there is a better way if you have emacs 23
nhak: well, different at least
http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/LineWrap
vinjacob
kodein, probably.
jbms
nhak: it is a question of whether you want it to actually insert new lines into the file, or simply display word-wrapped on your screen without inserting new lines
nhak: (which also means it will automatically adjust to whatever width window you use)
Astrobe
I was more thinking of a modeline that scrolls.
vinjacob
kodein: well, doen't matter I guess, reverted back to C-x 2
from C-x 3
nhak
jbms: thanks but i think i should use the auto-fill-mode as quidnunc said
vinjacob
(Action) needs to fiddle with emacs full screen, hope alloca bug is fixed.
kodein: you're right, C-x } is what I wanted.
kodein
vinjacob: happy to have been able to somehow be of help
now, I shall sleep, eagerly awaiting morning, when I can read what the earth-shaking announcement mr Knuth will have made is/was.
nhak
jbms: do i always have to keep hitting M-q to fill the paragraphs?
quidnunc
nhak: Did you turn on auto-fill-mode?
nhak
quidnunc: i have set (setq auto-fill-mode 1) in the config file
turbofail
Lvinjacob
whoop
s
quidnunc
nhak: Did you evaluate it? What does it say in your mode line?
vinjacob
turbofail: yes?
dto
hey. i'm asking about the new emacs 23.2 release. with cedet and semantic. anyone finding them useful for slime/lisp stuff?
turbofail
i was trying to search for your previous remarks in my erc buffer
vinjacob
turbofail: lastlog? :)
turbofail
yeah except i had custom bindings for it
that i hit wrong, apparently
nhak
quidnunc: how can i evaluate it ... i just test it by typing something more than 80 chars and it doesnt insert new lines :-S
rolando
(Action) just found out github has a 5 repos limit for a free account
quidnunc
nhak: Did you type one continuous stream of characters?
nhak
yes i did
i typed a stream with many words
quidnunc
nhak: I think the hook only get triggered when pressing space.
nhak: Were they separate words?
nhak
i understand what you mean :)
yeah
they are separate words
quidnunc
nhak: Try M-x auto-fill-mode
nhak: Also set-fill-column to something small (maybe 20 or 30) for testing
nhak
ok wait a sec
jc3
using emacs 23.2 on fedora 13, is it possible to make it use a different version of CEDET, without building from source?
quidnunc
nhak: Do this first: What is the value of auto-fill-function (use describe-variable or otherwise)
jbms
rolando: it claims to provide unlimited public repositories
nhak
quidnunc: ok after using M-x auto-fill-mode it worked but without that it did not
rolando
jbms: it does?
jbms
rolando: I haven't used it myself, but ... http://github.com/plans
nhak
i dont have any auto-fill-function in my .emacs
quidnunc
nhak: In the buffer that you think you have auto-fill-mode set, do M-x describe-variable auto-fill-function and tell me what the value is
nhak: Ah, never mind I didn't see your previous comment.
turbofail
i can't think of any good reason to pay github for private git hosting
quidnunc
nhak: When do you want auto-fill-mode enabled?
nhak
wait a sec
vinjacob
github sounds fishy to me
quidnunc
nhak: (are there specific modes)
nhak
can i define my own modes?
quidnunc
nhak: Yes
nhak
good :) and how
vinjacob
nhak: mode away.
cnk_
I love github
rolando
I can't find the new repository button...
I must be blind :P
quidnunc
nhak: There are several ways. define-derived-mode is the easiest way
nhak
quidnunc: the value of my auto-fill-function is nil --> it didnt work
cnk_
rolando: you logged in? It is in the bar with "Your repositories" on the right hand column
quidnunc
nhak: The issue is that auto-fill-function is a buffer local variable. You need to set it for each buffer or define a global setting (the latter is a bad idea). Now we need to discuss what the best way to set it for each buffer is. What types of buffers do you want it set for? Are there specific modes for which you want it set?
jbms
quidnunc: Typically the major mode takes care of that
rolando
cnk_: I am logged in
it's really weird
quidnunc
jbms: I'm sorry?
rolando
maybe I should check out gitorious
jbms
quidnunc: I don't think there is usually a need to manually set auto-fill-function
cnk_
rolando: and you are on your home page not your profile page, right?
quidnunc
jbms: I meant to say auto-fill-mode
nhak
good question :) but i think its not bad when i have that auto-fill-function as a global setting
jbms
quidnunc: oh okay
quidnunc
nhak: You definitely don't want it for writing code, for example.
nhak
true that
jbms
actually, it can be useful for comments
nhak
it seems that i have to define seperate modes for emacs
quidnunc
jbms: But not in general. Is there a way to enable it only for comments?
nhak: Why don't you explain exactly what you want to do and then I can give you specific advice.
jbms
quidnunc: I think that happens automatically
quidnunc
(or answer my questions: Is enabling it for text-mode good enough?)
nhak
ah i just want to editing some text files
not for writing code
quidnunc
jbms: I was not aware of that
Makes sense. It wouldn't be useful otherwise.
rolando
cnk_: yeah, I've found the button
cnk_
cool
quidnunc
nhak: Are they always '.txt' files?
nhak
yep
quidnunc
nhak: (add-hook 'text-mode-hook (lambda () (auto-fill-mode 1)))
nhak: Add that to your .emacs and you should be fine
nhak: (You need to evaluate it if you want to enable it for this session)
nhak
quidnunc: it still didnt work ... and how can i evaluate it?
vivien_
I use line highlighting, with "(global-hl-line-mode t)". How can I adapt the color of the line ("set-face-background 'hl-line ...") according to the background of the frame? I use the daemon: X frames have white background, while text frames have black background.
nhak
ah sorry
it works
