knob
Hello everyone! =)
rudybot
hello Mr/Ms knob
quotemstr
Let's record Emacs Gone Wild.
rudybot: Are you a fan of amateur Emacs action?
rudybot
quotemstr: any tips on learning languages, with you being an amateur linguist and all?
kodein
M-x spring-break
quotemstr
rudybot: It's "cunning linguist".
rudybot
quotemstr: there's ipa, but of course, no-one but an academic linguist actually understands ipa....
knob
Hello =)
quotemstr
rudybot: You really don't get it, do you?

rudybot
quotemstr: yes, ubuntu one seems very complicated for what is really pretty simple
quotemstr
(Action) gives up.
kodein
greetings!!!
knob
I'm starting out using eMacs for the first time!
rudybot
hello Mr/Ms kodein
kodein
cool
rudybot
It's just me, pulling the strings behind the scenes
offby1
(Action) whistles innocently
knob
(Action) writes in the /me space
offby1
still, you can have a sort of synasthetic conversation
parolang
(Action) hasn't tried an eMac or an iMac.
offby1
rudybot: demonstrate your brilliant Turing-test-passing skillz
rudybot
*offby1: I thought that maybe emacs intelligently inferred from my recently discovered info skillz that I would rather read about ...
scymtym_
manicman: you have two trailing closing parens in line 5
kodein
parolang: I'd send you an eMac, but they're heavy and stuff
knob
eMacs can't cross borders... it's in a Convention or something
offby1
Big Macs can, though
knob
They copied the name...
now I want a Big Mac
=\
offby1
mua ha ha
quotemstr
Big Mac..
... now with enough hormones to grow tits on a frog!

fledermaus
or, more applicably, with enough lard to grow moobs on a guy.
cluck
fledermaus: i think it's to blame on the cultural behavior too, i go to restaurants and see people leaving with leftovers on their plates because they feel full, then when i see the same people eating on mcdonald's they shove everything down forcefully
fledermaus
cluck: I believe McDs and other fast food has actualy been shown to be so loaded with fat and calories that it's actually addictive, since our bodies are geared to treat that stuff as a rare treat that they should make the most of
marioxcc
hi
┬┐how do i format a integer with 4 places?
manicman
scymtym_: thx!
marioxcc
ie: 1 must become 0001
999 0999
and so :)
fledermaus
(format "%04d" 1)
cluck
fledermaus: i don't deny the likelihood of that but i should point i'm below 60kg (i'm 1,72m) and i often eat at mcds (i'm not claiming in any way i'm a significant statistical sample, my behavior may be though)
quotemstr
I eat at McDonalds when I travel and have ceased to explode.
When it comes to food, everything except total caloric input is a second-order effect
Speaking of which: I start my magical mystery tour soon.
cluck
quotemstr: explode?
quotemstr
cluck: Expand.
cluck
ah
pjb``
Indeed, "Inconceivable". Otherwise I would have asked to quotemstr what's the point of travelling then?
kodein
I don't think that word means what you think it means.
avdi
Anyone know of a way to intelligently clean up old buffers? Like, kill all buffers I haven't used in X minutes?
kensanata
Wow, I'd never do that.
kodein
I've seen something like that
pjb``
kodein: yes, it means the same in French.
kensanata
If there's anything in buffer management, it's probably in ibuffer.
kodein
http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/MidnightMode
cluck
,midnight
fsbot
From memory, midnight.el is Runs code at midnight
kodein
pjb``: so much for my Princess Bride reference :/
cluck
,midnight.el
fsbot
I heard midnight.el is Runs code at midnight
cluck
...
kodein
.....
,cleanbufferlist
fsbot
kodein
fsbot: stupid!
fsbot
kodein
fsbot
created.
kensanata
fsbot: cleanbufferlist is described at http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/CleanBufferList
fsbot
whoops, cleanbufferlist is already something else.. Use 'is also'..
Currently: http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/CleanBufferList
kensanata
Gaah
fsbot: cleanbufferlist is also will kill buffers that havent been visited in 3 days, or in the last hour in the case of special buffers that are named either
fsbot
Added entry to the term "cleanbufferlist"
kensanata
fsbot: s/special.*/some special buffers/ in cleanbufferlist 1
fsbot
Replaced string "special.*" with "some special buffers".
jlf`
,cleanbufferlist
fsbot
cleanbufferlist -- [0] http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/CleanBufferList
[1] will kill buffers that havent been visited in 3 days, or in the last hour in the case of some special buffers
jlf`
huh, i thought fsbot's s/// was actually just a string replacement
avdi
Thanks, those are perfect
fledermaus
jlf`: it is
avdi
Running every night is actually exactly what I want
kodein
there you go then ;)
jlf`
fledermaus: then how did kensanata's replacement (special.*) succeed?
kensanata
jlf`: I fixed it in the background.
fledermaus
it replaced that string 0 times
jlf`
heh i see
fledermaus
so fsbot is telling you something that is technically true but totally unhelpful
scott_
Hello, I used to have a keybinding for backspace so that it would kill all whitespace back to the last non-whitespace character (including removing newlines in-between). I can't find it on emacswiki now, has anyone heard of this?
jlf`
scott_: you should be able to bind it to (lambda () (delete-horizontal-space t))
scott_
That doesn't do what I described, though.
Oh, maybe the t changes it,.
hmm
jlf`
the interactive version would be C-u M-\ if you want to try it
offby1
sounds vaguely familiar
jlf`
although it doesn't cross newlines
scott_
Yeah, I want it to cross newlines
offby1
the word "hungry" comes to mind, as in "c-hungry-delete-space" or something
scott_
Hmm, I wonder where I found it originally
offby1
,hungry
(Action) clears throat
fsbot
HungryDelete is (info "(emacs)Hungry Delete")
jlf`
you win this round, offby1
scott_
Strange, it's just in C mode?
legumbre
,deletingwhitespace
fsbot
I heard DeletingWhitespace is at http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?DeletingWhitespace
scott_
I was looking there
legumbre
scott_: isn't whack-whitespace what you described?
scott_
c-hungry-delete-backwards is
I can only use it in C mode right now
I just (require 'cc-cmds) and use 'c-hungry-backspace, it does exactly what I was remembering
kodein
omnomnom whitespaces?
scott_
hmm, problems using that with paredit
avdi
Blah, I forgot how to grep withing a single buffer
sepult
M-x grep-bla
M-x grep-TAB will show you alternatives
or use occur
kensanata
M-x occur is the best.
I love to add occur to the isearch map -- then I can type C-s foo C-o and get an occur buffer for foo.
benny
same here, it is great
jlf`
kensanata: isn't it already bound to M-o in the isearch map?
(Action) .oO("or did i do that?")
kensanata
Maybe I missed it.
I find the isearch map to be the crude joke on newbies.
jlf`
they added a lot of new bindings in 23 i think
kensanata
C-y to yank except in isearch map where it's M-y ... wtf?
jlf`
oh it's C-s M-s o
fledermaus

sigjuice
I have as the first line in my buffer: shopping list -*- mode: org; -*-
but it doesn't set the mode to Org mode. Any suggestions on what I might be missing?
sepult
mode: org-mode
try that
benny
sigjuice: is it behind a comment?
sepult
the identifier is not solely org
i think
benny
it is
sigjuice
benny: no. This is just a text file called shopping-list.txt
benny
works for me
sigjuice
perhaps I need to turn on interpretation of -*- somehow?
sepult
then get rid of the file suffix
or make it .el .lisp or so
benny
you don't need that either
sigjuice: try emacs -nw -Q shopping-list.txt
what major mode is selected?
parolang
.org extension opens in org-mode by default
sigjuice
I guess I have something in my .emacs. It works for me on a different system.
ceptorial
hi all... i'm trying to do clojure development in emacs with viper-mode. i have (setq viper-mode t) in my init.el (from emacs starter kit) which works fine when i open up emacs, but anytime i start a repl or start debugging i get switched back to emacs mode. anyone know how to permanently turn on viper mode across all buffers?
benny
,dv viper-mode
fsbot
not documented as a variable.
Defined in `viper'.
benny
are you sure you're doing this correctly?
ceptorial
nope
but that line does result in viper-mode enabled when i startup emacs
(setq viper-mode t)
benny
you can add a viper-mode hook to every major-mode basically, for example: (add-hook 'after-change-major-mode-hook 'viper-mode)
you can also read the viper.el file and see that this is a known problem
ceptorial
ah yes, that seems to fix it. thanks. another question.. where is the best place to put the require for vimpulse? i get this error "Error in post-command-hook: (void-function region-active-p)" when i put it in my init.el
benny
that shouldn't happen, you can probably fix it by saying (require 'simple) (require 'vimpulse) though
sigjuice
Looks like I set enable-local-variables to nil a while ago and forgot about it.
offby1
does icicles have a feature similar to ido: I can type C-x b, and then it displays lots of possible buffer names in the minibuffer, and as I type keys, it updates the display to contain only those buffers whose names contain what I typed?
docs for icicles are sort of overwhelming
ceptorial
benny: hm, does not seem to help, still getting the error
benny
ceptorial: put (require 'simple) as the very first line in your init.el and check again
ceptorial
benny: nope
benny
emacs --debug-init and see what's happening, because region-active-p is defined in simple.el
ceptorial
hm, i ran it w/ that option but it just seems to load normally... (with the error)
benny
put (setq debug-on-error t) as the first line and see what's happening then
maybe because it's inside a post-command-hook the debugging is not as easy as it should be
and if that doesn't work, this should definitely work as line #1: (load "simple")
unless your distro emacs config does something crazy
ceptorial
it's the mac carbon emacs port, i believe
sshelagh
offby1: icicles *is* over whelming
how does one whelm by the way?
offby1
I think it involves a cauldron, and boiling oil
it's so complex that I _assume_ it's capable of doing all sorts of useful cool things.
But having installed it, all I can tell that it's done is tweak the colors in the minibuffer, and use a smaller font in the *Completions* buffer
mxey
Maybe you should read the feature list on the wiki to get an impression what you can do? :)
offby1
I think I did already
there's like 200 pages on the wiki about icicles
mxey
Yes.
offby1
I hate that wiki. It's not as bad as (* shudder *) "forums", but it's still a mess
scott_
How can I have window focus follow my mouse (without clicking)?
offby1
scott_: I think that's between you and your window manager
scott_
I mean emacs windows.
My window manager already does.
I think I found it
http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/follow-mouse.el
benny
great stuff
offby1
WHY ARE RESTAURANT MENUS ALWAYS PDFS?!
(Action) gnashes teeth, rends garment
legumbre
offby1: it's either that or a huge .swf
offby1
hmm, decisions
I should send a large check to Craigslist, just because
sshelagh
scott_: thanks for finding follow-mouse. I like it
