For my ally is the Force. And a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. It's energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we...not this crude matter.
cvandusen
where's ,yowda?
,yowda
fsbot
cvandusen: Could you continue.
cvandusen
,yowda??
fsbot
Yes
cvandusen
great
madpickle
rudybot: do you like yoda?
rudybot
madpickle: ,yoda

jlf
,yow
fsbot
Why was I BORN?
madpickle
that bot's dumber than some of the people i work with.
cvandusen
madpickle: I would have said the opposite
bpalmer
rudybot: do you enjoy working with madpickle ?
rudybot
bpalmer: the only important thing is to enjoy what you're doing
madpickle
hm.
that was profound.
cvandusen
regardless of how dumb wocorkers are
madpickle
profoundly stupid.
cvandusen
owcorkers
madpickle
rudybot: do you have stupid coworkers?
rudybot
madpickle: One of $cow-orkers bought one in order to play space invaders on low-lying cloud banks
jlf
rudybot: do you consider offby1 a benefactor or an oppressor?
rudybot
jlf: C-x and C-x are easy to type with one hand. Also consider that C-z, C-a, C-s, and C-d (the other keys that are equally easy to type) already have other well-defined meanings.
jlf
rudybot: it's ok if you're afraid to say
rudybot
jlf: I'm afraid #emacs is not a good place to pick up women. ;-)
madpickle
(Action) mutters something
lol
cvandusen
(Action) nods
madpickle
this place is a roaring sausage fest
cvandusen
so says the madpickle

fsbot: quote
fsbot
JordiGH, I heard quote is http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/csquotes/
JordiGH
fsbot, say something funny.
fsbot
something funny.
JordiGH
...
madpickle
haha
cvandusen
fsbot: regurgitate
fsbot
madpickle
hmm
so I'm reading Hyperion / Fall of Hyperion
jlf
.tell rudybot hello
birny
I don't know that term. Type ".index h" to see the terms in my database starting with 'h'.
madpickle
is Endymion / Fall of Endymion just as good?
JordiGH
Oh, god, more bots.
birny: what are you?
I want a chatbot RFC, and I want every bot to answer to the 'what are you?' query.
JordiGH's first law of chatbotics.
jlf
i might be spurred to write a bot if i could call myself a chatboticist
cvandusen
I still want to write a bot that responds to ,yow on Twitter.
madpickle
zippy the pinhead's the best
paris hilton's twitter feed is pretty close to nonsensical. that'd be a good place to mine.
cvandusen
There used to be a bot called Markov II that disassociated some good stuff. It quit several months ago.
madpickle
bots are fun to write. i wrote an infobot clone (what fsbot / erbot is losely based off) ages ago and it was a huge success with the people i hung out with.
cvandusen
Or, a new site (Blabber, maybe?) that disassociates the current timeline from Twitter. They might take issue with that, though.
JordiGH
So the product I'm working on has "arse" in its name.
Should this be cause for concern?
It's a server.

jlf: Why are those news 5 years old?
Not new news.
cvandusen
slow news day
ecadre
hello
jlf
JordiGH: it's "news classic"
JordiGH
Haha.
jlf
i'm guessing it's not one of birny's more popular features
JordiGH
Spammy as hell too.
jlf
,give birny a botsnack
fsbot
(Action) gives birny a botsnack
ecadre
is there a way of getting shell or eshell to show characters correctly over an ssh connection?
jlf
ecadre: such as?
ecadre
jlf: well, if I use eshell/shell to connect to another machine over ssh, the output includes all sorts of extra characters etc.
jlf
,repro
fsbot
tell us EXACTLY 1) what you typed; 2) what you saw; and 3) what you expected to see.
technoma`
(add-to-list 'eshell-visual-commands "ssh") ; <= will open ssh connections from eshell in their own buffers
might try that
ecadre
well, on doing "ls", I get a result:
[01;34mvar[0m
instead of
jlf
,ansi
fsbot
hmm, ANSI is [0] see ansi-color-for-comint-mode-on
[1] see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANSI_escape_code
ecadre
var
bpalmer
colorized ls is an abomination.
jlf
bpalmer: take it back!
bpalmer
it's like eating shellfish.
jlf
ecadre: see ,,ansi-color-for-comint-mode-on
fsbot
Try: acfcmo ANSI ansi-color-in-shell AnsiColor
jlf
,s/ansi/ ,df ansi/ in ansi 0
fsbot
Replaced string "ansi" with " ,df ansi".
jlf
,ansi
fsbot
hmm, ANSI is [0] see ,df ansi-color-for-comint-mode-on
[1] see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANSI_escape_code
technomancy
dang, nice
bpalmer
let's exile ANSI to Canada.
cvandusen
heh. C-l in Safari behaves as expected.
ecadre
well, that line completely screwed up my emacs.
JordiGH
So 12 hour workdays for a week plus 8 hour weekends.
A gay old time indeed.
cvandusen
JordiGH: Did they tell you that up front?
JordiGH
No, just today the CEO gave us a pep talk this morning.
Except I'm on some weird external contract.
cvandusen
Egods, the "pep talk"
JordiGH
cvandusen: We're about to TRANSFORM THIS NATION, more or less.
cvandusen
When I grow up & become a CEO, I'm going to use the word "transmogrify" ceaselessly.
JordiGH
Will you "boink!"?
cvandusen
No "boinking", no "going forward".
jlf
JordiGH: one of the engineering higher ups in a former life used to call that submarine mode.. 'you on the submarine now. you leave port, go underwater. no see family, only work. you surface when work done.'
cvandusen
Ever gotten the "carrot & stick" talk?
tromey
no, what's that?
cvandusen
"You will get a shiny new carrot after we beat you with a stick for the next x months, 12 hours a day, 8 hours a day on weekends."
tromey
ugh
JordiGH
Well, I understand the beating with the stick will only happen for one week.
Frankly, I'm kinda excited. I haven't felt this much stress since university.
jlf
the carrot usually comes in the form of options which are diluted to worthlessness by the time they're vested
man i've made some poor career choices come to think of it
cvandusen
Problem was, the project was hopelessly behind already. After a couple of months, the developers were made sacrificial lambs and the project was rescoped.
JordiGH
Sacrificial lambs or scapegoats?
cvandusen
Well, we were all let go, so both.
JordiGH
Lazy programmers! Lazy! No job for you!
cvandusen
exactly
The HR lady was so disturbed by it, she quit a few weeks later.
cluck
cvandusen: will you have a tiger too?
cvandusen
cluck: ?
JordiGH
the HR tiger
It seems like an oblique attempt at humour.
cluck: Correct?
cluck
cvandusen: calvin transmogrifies, but he has hobbes
JordiGH
Oh, I missed the mark.
Thought it was the lady and the tiger.
(Action) really doesn't get most of Calvin & Hobbes. It's fun, but it's not the best thing ever, and the latter strips are just Watterson bi**hing from Calvin's mouth.
cvandusen
The lady or the tiger, however I digress pedantically so
cluck: only Acid Tiger
,g Acid Tiger

cluck
JordiGH: if you're implying i'm a sophisticated person i'll beat you to a pulp with my C++ reference manual
JordiGH
C++ doesn't have a reference manual.
God, I hope Twitter dies out.
cluck
JordiGH: sure it does, it's a bootleg copy of K&R plus four stripes of black duct tape :P
JordiGH
So do musicians now have twitter pages instead of MySpace?
e1f
just wow http://developer.apple.com/safaridemos/
JordiGH
e1f: So... we don't need no steenkin flash?
e1f
yeah. adobe can just go home now
cluck
e1f: that's not html5
technomancy
(Action) gripes at pages that conflate use the term "PC" to mean "Windows"
JordiGH
technomancy: "PC" means "not Apple".
cluck
e1f: also, they filter out browsers with better standards support than safari
technomancy
JordiGH: ironic since they practically invented the PC
cluck
google.com/pacman/ now that's js put to good use
JordiGH
Story of e1f.
And Sir Stephen Jobs.
e1f
cluck: you may gripe to sjobs@apple.com
JordiGH
Hey, a Dilbert that actually made me laugh: http://dribibu.xs4all.nl/dilbert20100504.html
ysph
cluck: what did you do to type not in bold?
jlf
is this bold?
cluck
e1f: i just pure evil and so i really like to make you moody when you're feeling good about apple
ysph
no, it's ^Bthis^B
and not was ^Bnot^B
cluck
^ isn't C-
ysph
i'm typing it that way so you guys can see it
jlf
cluck: historically ^x signified what we call C-x
ysph
this is in bold right?
cluck
i'm just typing that to make you not take yourself too seriously
jlf
ysph: my ^Bthis^B shows bold here.. i guess it's your irc client
e1f
cluck: if stuff works the way i want it, i'm happy. right now i'm happy with my mac and with apple.
ggole

yes, i should be on #erc

let's stop the play, people are starting to take it as srs bsnss
JordiGH
e1f: I know why the caged bird sings.
e1f
JordiGH: i also have the keys to the cage
cluck
or at least you think you do
JordiGH
Not the big cage you don't: http://infoworld.com/print/125854
cluck
but let's not go there, data is not ours anymore (sadly and regardless of platform)
jlf
,yow
fsbot
Yow! Am I JOGGING yet??
cvandusen
The article is not completely factual.
e1f
are there any apple critics that use apple products?
cvandusen
The supposed citation for this line: Steve Jobs never wanted third-party developers tinkering with his platform in the first place -- he thought Safari-based Web apps [1] would be enough
e1f
i wonder
JordiGH
e1f: Only when forced to.
cvandusen
Does not support the statement in the article
e1f
are they holding a gun to your head?
JordiGH
e1f: No, a paycheque.
e1f: and only after I accepted the job. But anyways, your point is that I'm not qualified to criticise Apple because I don't like it enough to use it out of my own free will?
e1f
no, that's not what i'm saying
JordiGH
I've used it. I've hated it. And not just on freedom grounds.
e1f
i find that once you begin to use apple products, i felt so much more happier, psycologically
