ok
kodein
a.out?
damd
i hate a.out, it always seems to segfault
dim
ok try-completion seems working
JordiGH
(Action) is tempted to add "buzzword-compliant" in his CV.
damd
i still don't understand why a backlog is called a backlog
doesn't feel like "back" nor "log" at all
elly
it is a log of the work you had to have done a while ago?
damd
why don't they just call it a TODO list? have i misunderstood the concept?
JordiGH
damd: It's not made out of wood? Is that the complaint?

kodein
burndown chart?
JordiGH
It's better than bad, it's good!
elly
damd: well, a todo list is generically stuff you need to do, but a backlog is specifically a list of stuff that was supposed to be done previously
bpalmer
damd: it's the idea of something that's built up
yeah, as elly says
damd
i see
so basically a TODO list is a superset of a backlog?
that kind of makes sense
s/kind of//
bpalmer
only if you intend everything in the backlog be done.
damd
"to do"... "done"...
"backlog" = "stuff that was supposed to be done"
dim
it seems completing-read wants the collection function to return only 1 match
how do I choose...
lisppaste
dim pasted "fuzzy completing read" at http://paste.lisp.org/display/111821
dim
madpickle: bronson: here's a first sketch, too tired now to have the completing-read working
but try-completion is happy
bronson
dim, heh, I'll have to play with that.
dim
I think it does what you want but the plumbing ain't right yet
and it'll need a max-depth setting too, so that you don't wait for eternity or end of recursive walking on huge reps
bronson: test code would be (try-completion "pi.el" 'walk-path-complete) in your directory, I use M-x ielm for this
well, pi.js, you get it :)
emvitch
since i use emacs literally _every_ day, i would like to donate money to the awesome people involved in developing emacs. how would i go about doing that?
the web page only mentions a way of making a general donation to the fsf, not directly to the development of emacs.
damd
emvitch: i don't think there is any way to donate directly to emacs
turbofail
there's a lot of people who work on emacs... it'd be hard to get money to "them" specifically
emvitch
i see, but fsf just seems like a bit to general - you know?
turbofail
if you want to donate money, choose a particular subsection of emacs you particularly like and contact whoever's working on it
damd
i don't think anyone receives money to work on emacs?
turbofail
and maybe they'll work something out
e1f
gerd molleman was a paid programmer when he was lead developer for emacs

emvitch
turbofail: yea, good idea. i might just do that.
e1f
johnsu01 might know a way to donate to a specific project as he works for the fsf
hober
*moellmann
e1f
ah thanks
i couldn't remember and chose the simpsons spelling
hober
or möllmann, iirc
mrak
Möölemann?
Möllemann?
e1f
surprising how many sex-position apps there are for the idevice; though none of them are ergonomic positions leading to rsi
hober
m C-x 8 " o llmann :)
johnsu01
we're working on a new system to help fund project expenses, but there isn't a way via the FSF to make a specific donation to emacs -- giving money to specific developers is always fine
donations to the FSF do help emacs via supporting the GNU development infrastructure
shabble
e1f: xah is probably working on an ergo-app :)
e1f
ah yes
probably involving an ergo keyboard
shabble
it'll involve quite a lot of surgery, and a painful adaptation process
but it'll be better!
emvitch
johnsu01: alright, thanks for clearing that up. it'll be great to have a system for funding project expenses - if it existed today, i would use it now.
shabble
wasn't there a plan for bug/feature bounties on the wiki?
although I guess it depends if you want to reward existing development, or encourage more.
icelandjack
Question,
is there any reason to use the Xemacs rather than emacs?
turbofail
if you need bignums maybe
for some reason
icelandjack
ok..
because the only thing it seems to provide is...
well maybe help for LaTeX
but buttons for "Save" and "Open"
turbofail
it can also be extended with dynamically loaded C modules
icelandjack
and the possibility of opening another window with the same session
oh
bpalmer
icelandjack: a developed package system.
nice internals.
icelandjack
xemacs has a package system?
bpalmer
of course. It's had one for many years.
parolang
shabble: Might be interesting if there was a way that donations could influence the direction that emacs development went into.
icelandjack
but emacs hasn't?
bpalmer
correct.
icelandjack
(it's just that it looks a bit odd seeing a terminal inside a GTK window)
turbofail
i think they just merged one in to gnu emacs actually
bpalmer
cvs emacs has recently added elpa
parolang
shabble: And I don't mean a direct $$$ = control, but there would be a way for users to vote with their money.
turbofail
emacs's internals are pretty horrifying
parolang
Soon...there will be an elpa for that.
shabble
most bounty systems seem to be "I have this problem, and would pay for a competent hacker to fix it for me"
johnsu01
icelandjack: you don't have to have xemacs to have an X window, emacs does that as well
shabble
adding money to the core development seems like a recipe for disaster.
bpalmer
I believe xemacs still builds and runs on DOS, but emacs doesn't ^_^
turbofail
interesting
bpalmer
that's an unsourced rumour, though.
johnsu01
(Action) writes bpalmer up for failing to distribute source
turbofail
good 'ol DOS
bpalmer
Send a written request to 1060 W Addison, Chicago, Illinois
turbofail
abort, retry, fail?
bpalmer
at any rate, icelandjack , I use xemacs and am happy with it.
the vast majority of programs work with both emacs and xemacs.
icelandjack
ok
shabble
cedet? :)
icelandjack
thanks
bpalmer
shabble: I think it works as well for xemacs as emacs.
turbofail
i'm still waiting for the goddamned lexbind branch to find its way in somewhere
oh hm... looks like there's actually been some movement on that recently
e1f
(Action) is home today avoiding the downtown protestor madness
turbofail
Let's punish the many for the sins of the few.
e1f
sounds like a plan
the $1B price for security was a surprise to everyone
turbofail
where'd we get security for only 1 G$?
parolang
What are they protesting?
rryouumaa
poritesters?
damd

slocate
hi, i'm trying to configure JDIbug, but I keep gettng failed connections
yates
i've noticed that my focus gets stock a lot on the toolbar (under gnome/fedora 13). is there a keystroke to get from there back to the edit window?
JordiGH
yates: C-g
(maybe)
yates
no, that doesn't work
nixeagle
yates: ESC ESC ESC?
damd
C-x o?
yates
nope
slocate
nobody has tried JDIbug?
yates
damd: nope
nixeagle: nope
nixeagle
yates: M-: (current-buffer)
what does that give
yates
the only way i've seen how to do it is to click a menu bar item
nixeagle
when you are in the problem spot that is
turbofail
somebody else reported that problem yesterday
it's been reported to bug-gnu-emacs already
nixeagle
oh awesome :D
yates
good - thanks turbofail
i meant "to click a toolbar item" - specifically, the help icon seems to work well
nixeagle
what I was going to ask: Does anyone know how to get flymake to read more then one line for an error? I'm talking about programming it to handle a new compiler's error diagnostics. The compiler is rock and it likes to send more then one line explaining what broke and such.
I tamed cc-mode :>
turbofail
yates: hm actually the problem reported yesterday was dealign with the menu button
er... menu bar
but it might be the same problem... sounds that way to me anyway
yates
turbofail: could be - i haven't characterized it very closely
is there a way to disable the toolbar in your init.el?
tuvwx
what is it exactly that C-y does in the i-search prompt (C-s) ?
nixeagle
tuvwx: isearch-yank-line
turbofail
yates: (tool-bar-mode 0)
nixeagle
tuvwx: you can find that one out by doing C-s C-h k C-y RET
fledermaus
yates: customise default-frame-alist and set tool-bar-lins to 0, or call tool-bar-mode in your .emacs
yates
thanks
JordiGH
init.el?
nixeagle
JordiGH: ~/.emacs.d/init.el
tuvwx
isearch-yank-line: Pull rest of line from buffer into search string. so how do i search for something in the killring?
JordiGH
It's called an .emacs, son
nixeagle
JordiGH: yes but its another name for it that some people use
I think some of the use of it comes from things like emacs-starter-kit which use it.
yates
paste it and search normally
JordiGH
I feared as much.
technomancy: This is all your fault.
First you call it init.el, then it'll be emacs.ini, and before you know it cuda-mode will be the default.
nixeagle
I doubt cuda-mode will ever be default :|
turbofail
and then there will be no one to speak up for you
tuvwx
yates: how do i paste it in the i-search prompt? C-y doesn't look in the kill-ring in i-search
nixeagle
JordiGH: I don't like it because it actually overrides the .emacs ... which means the first time I did not know someone was using emacs-starter-kit I wasted hours trying to figure out why my stuff was not working.. it turns out init.el overrides .emacs and emacs won't even look for it :D.
fledermaus
JordiGH: if they aver make cua the default, we can a) kill the devs firstborn b) salt the earth so nothing will grow near their homes again c) fork the project
ever
nixeagle
tuvwx: M-x yank RET :D
JordiGH
Near their ~ you mean?
fledermaus
salt their passwords!
tuvwx
nixeagle: nope. that pasted into the buffer, not the i-search prompt
JordiGH
fledermaus: The fork will be called "Neckbeard Emacs"
nixeagle
tuvwx: wow, I'm clueless
turbofail
this weather is bullsh*t... there is no way in which this can be described as "summer"
i blame iceland
ALL OF IT
icelandjack
....wha
turbofail: ...wha?
turbofail
volcanos and such
icelandjack
I... see
fledermaus
turbofail: where are you experiencing this weather?
turbofail
california
icelandjack
The weather here is great
tuvwx
found it: Type M-y to yank the last string of killed text.
fledermaus
turbofail: wrong way for eyjafjallajökull ash.
the weather in the UK was pretty "meh" upto now but it's started improving.
