johnw
what is that?
benny
inability to realize how incompetent you are
e1f
last sunday's ny times magazine had a cover story on ibm's watson ai. there's a photo with the design team (mostly "old timers") seated with blackthinkpads on their laps, except for one young guy with a macbook air
benny
I don't quite understand why jlf said that though
do you really see the world through apple filters?
johnw
i'd rather see it through apple fritters
shabble
the world is delicious and unhealthy?
jlf
benny: it was apropos of nothing
benny
so you're the new `bark'

in magit, i have an "unmerged" file, with the <<<<< type markers. k does not kill it. how to just get rid of all that?
Han
,magit
fsbot
magit is [0] http://zagadka.vm.bytemark.co.uk/magit/
[1] a relatively full-featured Emacs interface to git,
[2] see screencast at http://vimeo.com/2871241
rryouumaa
stashes really get me confused in magit sometimes
well, merging does too i suppose

i'm trying to get emacs to work with 256 colors in the terminal; the problem is that the machine i'm on doesn't have recent termcap/terminfo databases, so i get a cryptic error message if i try to invoke emacs after setting TERM=xterm-256color
is there a way to tell emacs to ignore my TERM variable and just use 256 colors anyway
marioxcc
eck: ¿how do you want to emacs use 256 colors, if it ignores the protocol of your terminal?
pointless
eck
maybe, but vi seems to be finee
i.e. you can tell vim to just use 256 colors even though your terminal doesn't know that it supports it
marioxcc
hmm
then i don't know
i use emacs in X11
eck
i guess i'll see if i can install a newer termcap/terminfo in my home directory, or something like that
that's probably the most straightforward route
kensanata
All I know is this: http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/XTermColors
jlf
eck: "cryptic error message" is rather vague
eck
jlf: it's like this http://paste.pocoo.org/show/228221/
jlf
see, that's not cryptic :)

Is there a way to copy the contents of a file, such as a skeleton XHTML file, to the current buffer/file (other than C-x C-f skel.html RET C-x C-h C-x M-w C-x C-b RET C-y)?
h, rather than C-h - see, it's a pain!...

bremner
C-x i ?
rgr
Can I rotate a window split? e.g make a vertical split into a horizontal one?
e1f
there is ,,skeleton-mode
fsbot
try: RecipeForSkeletonMode SkeletonMode
edev
bremner: Perfect! Thank you!
e1f
so you can pre-program skeletons
ohnoes i answered two emacs-related questions this week
i have upset the balance of the universe
edev
e1f: Interesting - I'll check it out, though I often need more flexibility (or think I do). Thank you!
rgr
brr, I gave up trying to use emacs in screen in a term for anything more than basic things - termcap and keybindings and x integration were a minefield.
In fact I can state that nothing in IT ever screwed my mind up more than trying to understand termcap settings and how clients read it and act on it.
Ygnus
Looks like most people here use erc.
rryouumaa
for a casual user, rcirc and erc are pretty much the same imo
__yhvh__
hey, anyone know how to get some padding between linenums and text?
rryouumaa
,skeletonmode
fsbot
rryouumaa, hmm, SkeletonMode is [0] at http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?SkeletonMode

[2] see AutoInsertMode

__yhvh__: ,,dv linum-format

Either a format string like "%7d", `dynamic' to adapt the width

bozhidar`: about?
rgr
if I switch from erc to another buzffer when I come back the buffer is sometimes scrolled to half way up as opposed to being at the end. Any ideas?

there should be an erc config to stay at end I think
fledermaus
,dv erc-scrolltobottom-mode
fsbot
Non-nil if Erc-Scrolltobottom mode is enabled.
See the command `erc-scrolltobottom-mode' for a description of this minor mode.
Setting this variable directly does not take effect;
either customize it (see the info node `Easy Customization')
or call the function `erc-scrolltobottom-mode'. ..[Type ,more]
ober
do you use ecb too?
rgr
no
does that need to be called for all erc buffers do you know?
fledermaus

fsbot
You can customize this variable.
Defined in `/usr/share/emacs/23.1/lisp/erc/erc-goodies.elc'.
pizzledizzle
what's the difference between (string #o223) and "\223". equal func returns nil, but if i string-to-char both and then run them through equal, it returns t
is that a stupid question? :|
qDot
Encoding, maybe?
fledermaus
strings don't have an encoding.
it could be one is multibyte and the other not though.
qDot
Yeah, that's what I was going for.
fledermaus
(multibyte-string-p (string #o223)) => t

jlf
,cocoaemacs
fsbot
jlf: From memory, cocoaemacs is [0] nightly builds for cocoa emacs 23 on os x http://atomized.org/wp-content/cocoa-emacs-nightly/

dang`r`us
alrighty ... I'm more of a build-from-source guy but I'll give it a shot - thx!
Riviera, stop stalking me plz kthx
jlf
dang`r`us: you can build from source too
./configure --with-ns is all you need iirc
dang`r`us
yeah, well, I want to use the macports system ... just wondering whether emacs-app is still current
Riviera
dang`r`us: k
dang`r`us
it says version 23.2 so it should be
rryouumaa
full screen still broken on osx
marioxcc
dang`r`us: i think GNU Emacs supports OS X
rryouumaa
btw, should this work? it doesn't for me. git pull;./configure --with-jpeg=no --with-png=no --with-gif=no --with-tiff=no --with-ns;make clean;make
marioxcc
but anyway, OS X is a propietary operating system and contains DRM, maybe you want to switch to a free OS as is GNU/Linux: http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html
rryouumaa
:)
marioxcc
you can use -mm instead of --fullscreen
dang`r`us
marioxcc, indeed it does
marioxcc
this starts emacs in a maximized windws
as large as you windows manager can provide
if you need more space, and fullscreen is broken, try removing the bars and the fringes
(menu-bar-mode 0)
(tool-bar-mode 0)
(scroll-bar-mode 0)
rryouumaa
with the font i use, that's not enough, i think
marioxcc
rryouumaa: if you can use rest programs at not fullscreen, ¿why not emacs?
emacs is one of the software more concerned about screen real estate, try using the same face as with rest programs
dang`r`us
how do I remove the kernel?
marioxcc
dang`r`us: ¿kernel?
do you mean the kernel of the OS?
dang`r`us
nevermind ...
marioxcc
hi people
[QUESTION]: ¿how i can edit a register?
technomancy
[ANSWER]: .you can use the set-register function.
marioxcc
technomancy: isn't there something like edit-register than open a buffer and update the register body as I do type?
ggole
marioxcc: nope. Easiest thing is to insert the register, edit it, mark it, then copy it to the register again.
marioxcc
hmm :S, ok, thanks
maybe i should use buffers instead of registers?
ggole
Yeah, maybe
C-x i makes inserting them pretty easy
marioxcc
ggole: sure :)

Does anyone know how to get tempo-mode to properly insert the region in a template? Here's my practice template: http://pastebin.com/yyPuD7mt

marioxcc
the question: ¿how can i set up rat or stump to be my
windows manager?
i know how to start it manually, but my X by default set up gdm
and gdm don't let me choise ratpoison
jlindsay
You need a .desktop file for it, added in with the existing xsession files
_danb_
marioxcc: I had a vague idea I had to go into gconf-editor and change a setting in there (to replace gnome-wm) (if you're using gnome)
ggole

i hate gdm anyway
