emacs-dwim: it should just work, although it may break your emacs.
justinlilly
anyone know how I can fix C-4 translating to C-/ on my keyboard? (console emacs on ubuntu)
JordiGH
justinlilly: What's your keyboard layout? Not US english, I bet.
justinlilly
JordiGH: it is, as far as I know.
JordiGH
Not international layout?
justinlilly
nope.
ubuntu lists it as usa.
JordiGH
That's all the ideas I had.
justinlilly
hrm. could possibly be a urxvt thing.
JordiGH
Oh, terminals.
Why do people open an X terminal to use Emacs? :-/

justinlilly
JordiGH: less alt+tabbing
AimHere
You tried it in a proper fullscreen console without X?
JordiGH
huh
How do you switch terminals?
justinlilly
:-/ its a terminal thin.g
JordiGH: currently: ^z#
where # is 0-4
helps me not alt-tab incessently.
(Action) just switches to gui emacs for a while.
SirNick
is there any way to make espresso mode take the place of javascript-mode entirely? For example, mumamo still uses javascript-mode
cvandusen
SirNick: When you say 'mumamo', do you mean nxhtml?
SirNick
perhaps... I'm only requiring mumamo-fun in my .emacs though
cvandusen: would you know how to do it for nxhtml?
cvandusen
SirNick: Well, I was going to say that espresso became javascript-mode (aka js-mode) and that is what nxhtml uses.
I know that nxhtml has mumamo in it, but if you're not using it, I don't know what that is.
When I say 'it' I mean nxhtml, and when I say 'that' I mean mumamo. :)
SirNick
cvandusen: well I am using just mumamo from nxhtml util, not requiring the nxhtml autoload directly so maybe its the same thing
cvandusen: But I require espresso mode and it is automatically used for .js files, however when in an html file with javascript, it doesn't seem to use espresso because its not getting the same intention level settings I have for espresso
in the mode bar it also says Javascript/eruby-html while when just editing a javascript file it says Espresso
cvandusen
You'd have to override mumamo/nxhtml's usage of js-mode, which (I think) would require digging into the guts.
SirNick
Hmm that's unfortunate
thanks though
cvandusen
You could ask on nxhtml's launchpad site. Lennart is very quick to respond.
SirNick
alright I might try that
cvandusen
SirNick: If the indentation level is the only thing that's different between espresso and js in html, you could set js-indent-level to the same thing that you have for espresso.
SirNick
hmm alright I'll try that and see if it works... so is it using js.el or javascript.el? I don't know how to tell
cvandusen
js.el
SirNick
I saw a mention that says js.el was formerly espresso.el, is that correct? I'm very confused with all the different versions of javacript modes
cvandusen
yep
SirNick
ah so I should be using js.el instead?
cvandusen
IIRC, javascript.el is the old one. espresso became js.el, and js2 is another thing altogether.

SirNick
ah i see
cvandusen
Yeah, it comes with Emacs.
SirNick
cvandusen: maybe the problem I have been having is that I seemed to have had javascript-mode and js-mode both installed and was using javascript-mode settings to try to alter js-mode...
cvandusen
SirNick: Sounds like it.
SirNick
cvandusen: yep that was indeed it. Thank you
cvandusen

pizzledizzle
is it possible to tell if the function was called interactively?
fledermaus
,df interactive-p
fsbot
interactive-p is a built-in function in `C source code'.
(interactive-p)
Return t if the function was run directly by user input.
This means that the function was called with `call-interactively'
(which includes being called as the binding of a key) ..[Type ,more]
pizzledizzle
thanks
lamdk
hey is there a key which marks a html tag?
so that you can like, mark the tag, then M-w to copy it

marioxcc
hi
¿is there a refractoring facility for emacs?
Eraldo
Greetings
marioxcc
¿is there a refractoring facility for emacs?
technomancy
marioxcc: what language?
marioxcc
technomancy: i'm looking for a general utility, if any
if not, i need C and Common Lisp
technomancy
refactoring is very language-specific
marioxcc
technomancy: sure it is but some thing in emacs have a uniform interface beside backend, like is VC :D
technomancy
true, but VC is several orders of magnitude easier to implement. =)
marioxcc
¿really?
hober
indeed
marioxcc
oh, lol
hober
marioxcc: If you're using Python, I've quite liked ropemacs
technomancy
maybe not for C, but for truly dynamic languages, I'd say yes
marioxcc
hober: i don't use python

rryouumaa
marioxcc: depends. in some cases.
some problems are genuinely refractory

anair_84
how do i make control characters visibile
i have a file with ^M
AimHere
They're visible be default on my 23.1.1
anair_84
23.1.90.1
JordiGH
Unless every line has a CRLF endings.
In which case, they're not.
anair_84
cat behaves weird it shows a single line and keeps scrolling through it
less shows ^M characters
but i don't see anything special characters in emacs
AimHere
Emacs probably automatically assumes you've got a mess-doss text file and is treating it appropriately
anair_84
if i do tr '\r' '\n' it seems to show properly in cat
marioxcc
anair_84: cat?
turbofail
meow
marioxcc
is your question about emacs or cat?
if cat, maybe you want to try cat -v
if emacs, i don't see the problem, they show up by default in a different face
(at least in my 23.2)
anair_84
they show ups as ^M s>
?
marioxcc
¿what does the above show as?
it must be ^M
anair_84
it shows up without any special characters at the end
marioxcc
anair_84: ¿what emacs version do you have?
anair_84
23.1.90.1
JordiGH
Roger that, anair_84. The fox is in the lair, over.

hi everyone
any ideas how to cut text without getting it copied to kill ring ?
,kill

delete-region ?
abbe
legumbre, but no default keybinding exists for it, thanks.
legumbre
wait, I don't understand. Where do you want the text you cut to go?
abbe
legumbre, i just read the manual, and i noticed i need delete rather than cut.
legumbre
yeah, it's not bound by default
parolang
That way you won't overflow the kill ring.
QinGW
since it's ring, How will it overflow?

Hey some of the emacs commands conflict with my virtual-desktop key shortcuts. How can I change the meta-character for emacs?
abbe
,meta
fsbot
I think meta is [0] M-x means press and hold [META] (on PC keyboards, this is often ALT or the Windows key), press [x], release both; If you don't have META, M-x can be gotten by ESC x --> press ESC, release it, press x.
[1] see METAKeyProblems,
[2] (info "(emacs)M-x"), ..[Type ,more]
jlf`
ldleworker: what platform?
ldleworker
Ubuntu, but I'm using emacs over screen.
over ssh for that matter

I think MetaKeyProblems is [0] at http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?MetaKeyProblems

parolang
GNOME 3 is going to be epic fail.
JordiGH
parolang: Why?
parolang
He left...but I'm imagining a KDE 4-level fiasco, when everyone decides they don't like the new interface + bugs.
I just read Tom's Hardware review of latest Ubuntu...they were impressed. Maybe I'll give Ubuntu another shot.
abbe
parolang, +1
parolang
abbe: You use it?
abbe
parolang, no i don't use ubuntu, i meant +1 for GNOME3's destiny.
parolang
Ah, right.
People need to dig up GNUStep.
abbe
i don't use GNOME either, but my dad uses GNOME :(
parolang
They've been working on GNUStep for all this time, they don't get no recognition.
abbe
and I wonder what would his reaction be if he sees GNOME3 ;)
parolang
Good question :)
technomancy
gnome is boring
parolang
Yes...it is.
abbe
he used KDE 3.5.x and liked it, and but KDE4 is too much eye-candy
parolang
But...GNOME is the sort of thing that a Windows or Mac user expects.
abbe
Xfce is getting there...
parolang
Ubuntu seems to be the only people interested in the whole competing with Microsoft thing.
jlf`
let's see if linux is ready for the desktop yet
parolang
heh
Linux will be ready for the desktop five years after desktop computers no longer matter.
abbe
emacs was desktop-ready since day-0 :)
sword
I like Xfce
It's nice
parolang
I've never tried it.
abbe
same here, xfce rocks!
(Action) uses xfce with xmonad
parolang
Is it like a fast version of GNOME?
sword
I dunno, I couldn't use GNOME for very long without my compu consuming all ram
Was a bit old
abbe
parolang, xfce is another desktop environment, nothing to do with GNOME except Gtk and some other small stuff
GNOME sucks even on my 8 GiB memory, core 2 duo box :(
parolang
(Action) needs a new netbook.
sword
Graphically it looks similar but the guts are all different
