Colloguy`:
M-x info?
bpalmer
Colloguy`: well, part of it depends on what you mean by "package"
italic
bpalmer: so i should reset view-mode after?
Colloguy`
rcirc.el, say
marioxcc
italic: you should, or add (view-mode 1) to the hook of your major mode
bpalmer
italic: (with-current-buffer buf (let ((in-view-mode view-mode)) (foo-mode) (if in-view-mode (view-mode 1))))
Colloguy`
got it from M-x info
bpalmer
Colloguy`: so it'll probably be documented inside of the emacs info manual, since it's been integrated into emacs (assuming emacs, not xemacs)
italic
right, got it. thanks!

bpalmer
some "packages" will have their own info manuals; and some you'll end up needing to M-x find-library RET library-name RET
and peeking at the documentation in comments at the top of the file.
'"But more than that, Foursquare is an [endless string of meaningless buzzwords we just couldn't bring ourselves to transcribe]."'
Colloguy`
okay, thanks!
bpalmer
italic
also, there is shell-mode-hook, but i cant change a buffer to shell-mode
JordiGH
Oh, wow, mercurial.el
mfisher
oh, that's from the onion. I thought it was typical #emacs cynicism and stodginess

bpalmer
italic: why can't you?
italic
bpalmer: it doesnt exist, just shell-script-mode when i M-x
cvandusen
bpalmer: I am _so_ tweeting that!
bpalmer
italic: odd. Try M-x shell RET first, and see if that loads it.
italic
bpalmer: it does make it available after that. but then it gives an error "no process"
bpalmer
italic: well, that's to be expected.
shell-mode is designed to work with an inferior shell process.
but there shouldn't be anythign stopping you from shooting your foot if you wanted to do something contrary to design.
marioxcc
i never understood the "shoot in the foot" thing
¿what does it means when someone says "X prevents you from shooting yourself in the foot"?
AimHere
Shooting yourself in the foot == doing something stupid
jlf
so there isn't ... /me inadvertently went into zone-mode looking for zone-when-idle
JordiGH
marioxcc: If you are holding a gun without a safety, and you hold it with the cannon pointing down as guns are often carried, if it has no safety, it can shoot your feeet.
marioxcc: ¿Get it?
marioxcc
oh, yeah
thanks
JordiGH
marioxcc: Also, if you're a very bad marksman and you don't even know how to use a gun, you can also end up shooting your own feet.

marioxcc
haha, yeah
italic
bpalmer: thanks
Colloguy`
'("otherworlders.org" :channels ("#emacs")) is a list containing a string, a symbol that starts with a colon char, and a list, right?
actually, forget about the first and third thing, I'm just confused by the 2nd item
JordiGH
Haha, "here's the fu*king link".
I think this some of the best The Onion I've seen.
marioxcc
Colloguy`: no, actually '(...) is a quote
jlf
,(symbolp :foo)
fsbot
:( Symbol's value as variable is void: fs-:foo
marioxcc
wich is evaluated to (...)
jlf
it's t here :)
Colloguy`
okay, but the middle item with the colon, is just a wierdly named symbol, right?
marioxcc
Colloguy`: if you are new to Emacs Lisp maybe you want to read the Emacs Lisp Intro
it isn't weired named, is the customary naming for keywords and so
if you are talking about emacs lisp, yeah, is just a symbol as the rest ones
in common lisp it's a symbol in the package named "keywords"
bpalmer
well, it's a read-only symbol.
(setq :foo 3) will fail.

rudybot: What do you think of scheme?
rudybot
jordanb: Sorry, I don't know enough about lua to know about some features of the language that are not already present in the `scheme' language.
timur_
how can i search the last string that i searched?
cvandusen
timur_: C-s C-s
timur_
thx

jlf
rudybot: i like your scare quotes around the word scheme
rudybot
jlf: <offby1> I think you mean "Scare" "Quotes"
jlf
rudybot: what does offby1 have to do with anything?
rudybot
jlf: but the man who does this is a genius (but would have use it for anything else I think :p )

Anyone use emacs as their primary editor for Ruby?
jordanb
Tons of wankers od
Like bpalmer
do
rudybot: Do you use Emacs for Ruby development?
rudybot
jordanb: I was under the impression that development had stopped entirely.
jordanb
rudybot: quote
rudybot
Let's use Windows/386.
cvandusen
rudybot: cite that quote
rudybot
cvandusen: ...but cannot cite it properly now.
cvandusen
bah!
jlf
offby1: let's throttle rudybot
cvandusen
jlf: I think you got that backward.
jordanb
fsbot: say jlf: other bots are just as abusable.
fsbot
jlf: other bots are just as abusable.
cvandusen
Your Honor, prosecution is leading the witness.
jlf
jordanb: yet they are not as abused
jordanb
fsbot: say not that jordanb abuses bots, he's actually an excellent guy who's a real asset to the channel.

rudybot: defend yourself
rudybot
cvandusen: is anyone here _really_ going to defend that?
jordanb
rudybot: What do you think of jordanb?
rudybot
jordanb: I am a recovering addict
jordanb
"recovering"
marioxcc
¿is rudybot really a bot?
cvandusen
admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery
timur_
is there a way to call bash commands in emacs?
marioxcc
timur_: I'm not sure what do you mean with "bash commands", but maybe
M-!
is what you are searching for
timur_
yes thats wat i meant
jordanb
rudybot: Are you really a bot?
rudybot
jordanb: I want that info accessible even after the bot restarts, so I pretty much have to.
marioxcc
lol
jordanb
Is rudybot really a bot??
fsbot
Of course not!
marioxcc
haha
jordanb
rudybot: quote
rudybot
We should monetize emacs.

In a few months, it will be at genius level and a few months after that its powers will be incalculable." --- Marvin Minsky, LIFE Magazine, November 20, 1970.
jordanb
And then we'll link it with a Russian version of it.
DraX
i'm afriad my init.el will gain sentience at any moment and slaughter me
jordanb
It will then wage war against us by clogging all our communication channels with porn and cat pictures.
JordiGH
And cat porn and porncats.
Alright, now I want to name a band like that.
The Porncats.

Unfortunatly for the computer, common sense and intelligence aren't often correlated.

how can i get out the soundnotification when i chroll up and down to the end? -- i put out all the system soundsnotifications but still emacs make a notification sound!!!
jlf
chroll?
cvandusen
like chown, chmod, et. al.
"Change the roll that this person will eat."
jlf
now i understand

'cause that's how we chroll
cvandusen
Now you're just being silly. :D

Anyone have any advice on how to get emacs to properly highlight Ruby regex literals and %{} style code?

Hendrikus: Did you try setting visible-bell to t?
Hendrikus
cvandusen: you mean in my os system? Ore in Emacs?
jlf
aka InvisiBell"
cvandusen
Hendrikus: in Emacs
Ronco makes those, don't they?
Hendrikus
cvandusen: I will take a look where i can find that!
jlf
cvandusen: dunno, it was very late at night when i saw the commercial
cvandusen
Hendrikus: I know it turns off the audible bell, but then you have to deal with the visible bell...
jlf: Then it must have been him. He should sell aprons.
Hendrikus
cvandusen: why its is so diffecult to get this done?
jlf
well you can always set ring-bell-function to a nop
Sketch
Hendrikus: emacs in a shell, or in X?
Hendrikus
cvandusen: in x
fsmunoz
jlf: wouldn't it be possible to (defun ring-bell-function () t) ?
jlf
fsmunoz: it's a variable, so setting it nil should suffice
fsmunoz
(just by reading the C-h visible-bell docs
jlf: oh, right
Yes, even better
cvandusen
setting it (audible-bell) to nil didn't turn it off for me
jordanb
rudybot: quote
rudybot
I love it how Slashdot completly fails to understand what the GPL requires.
cvandusen
but, I will tell you that in my case visible-bell is the butt ugliest thing I've seen in a long, long time
jordanb
Emacs' bell usage is criminal
cvandusen
Crime-against-humanity level criminal
jordanb
emacs developers should have electrodes attached to their genitals which shock them every time my bell rings.
Hendrikus
Please is there no way to get that notifications sound out in emacs - by every litle thing i do ther eis a sound it make me thinking to get back to VIM
cvandusen
jordanb: I think that's how they used to do it. That's why the release cycles were so far apart.
Hendrikus: Did you set visible-bell to t?
fsbot: is there an echo in here?
Hendrikus
cvandusen: where can i find that?
jordanb
??
cvandusen
Hendrikus: (setq visible-bell t)
fsbot
is -- is
mu!
cvandusen
fsbot: too little, too late
fsbot
jordanb
Hendrikus: Do M-x customize-variable RET visible-bell
Hendrikus
cvandusen: sorry i am NEW in emacs where do i have to put (setq visible-bell t)?
cvandusen
Hendrikus: Do what jordanb said
Hendrikus
cvandusen: This? Do M-x customize-variable RET visible-bell
cvandusen
Hendrikus: yep
Hendrikus
cvandusen: And where can i do that?
cvandusen
Hendrikus: Just start typing
Hendrikus: Do you know M-x?
jordanb
Hendrikus: You should do the tutorial
Hendrikus
cvandusen: No I don't no M-x - this is my first moment's with emacs -
parolang
C-h t
Control h, then press t
Or press F1, then press t
cvandusen
Hendrikus: Depending on your keyboard, M may be the Alt key. Hold it down, then press 'x'.
then release both
jordanb
But you should do the tutorial first, or you'll just continue to be confused.
You can mute your speakers in the interm.
jlf
expanding foam is good for that
cvandusen
jordanb: I was about to say, he may go insane before finishing the tutorial.
parolang
Hendrikus: Where do you live?
jordanb
Netherlands surely
jlf
(Action) wonders if there's any problem that can't be solved with expanding foam
Hendrikus
cvandusen: The NetherLands
jordanb
BP aught to try expanding foam.
