(Action) fumes.
happypickle
i'm pondering how hard it would be to apply ashawley's idea to registers.
without spending more than 15 minutes on it, of course.
quotemstr
I have *never* seen anyone express such a horrible misunderstanding of what functional programming is, how Lisp works, and what self-modifying code entails, and express this stupidity with such bombast: http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1654790&cid=32241932
happypickle
there are plenty of morons on slashdot
sadly they upvote other morons.
it's a self-perpetuating circlejerk there.

quotemstr: congratulations, you found an idiot on the internets.

Where are my mod points when I need them!
JordiGH
"self modifying code"?
quotemstr
What's more, the entire Wikipedia article on self-modifying code just reeks of horrible bullsh*t.
AimHere
lambda is self-modifying!
quotemstr
Even after I edited it.
AimHere: No it isn't.
ashawley
quotemstr: http://dept-info.labri.fr/~strandh/Essays/psychology.html
AimHere
I know it isn't
JordiGH
What do you mean "even after"?
AimHere
That's pretty much a quote from the thread you linked
quotemstr
JordiGH: I cleaned up the "high-level languages" section. Check the history for the version prior to my edits.
ashawley
happypickle: Yes, we need buffer registers.
quotemstr
AimHere: Right; I just wanted to make sure you didn't actually share that delusion.
JordiGH
Does not touch typing actually slow anyone down?
AimHere
My neurons have hardened. I don't know how to not touch type any more.
quotemstr
JordiGH: I touch type all the time.
AimHere
My guess is yess.
happypickle
i don't think i ever look at my keyboard.
quotemstr
JordiGH: Do I use the traditional home-row approach? No. Does my system work for me? Yes.
JordiGH
Yeah, I know we touch-type, we're Emacsists. But do others actually suffer?

happypickle
touch-typing and 10-finger system are two different things.
JordiGH
I can't actually picture how others type moving their hands away from homerow, but they seem to manage.
sepult
touch typing ?
quotemstr
By the way: trace output is a great debugging tool.
sepult
you mean less than 10 fingers ?
turbofail
lambda COULD be implemented by self-modifying code
quotemstr
It often takes more work to get a debugger to spit out traces then to just insert tracing in a program.
happypickle
no, touch typing means you type by touch - not by sight.
sepult
oh
quotemstr
turbofail: I was talking to someone the other day in #lisp who implemented macro-expansion by patching forms as they're evaluated.
happypickle
part of the reason why a lot of us are so invested in a good text editor is because it cuts down on the amount of time we spend typing and navigating. if our brains were the bottleneck few would bother with touch typing.
quotemstr
turbofail: But even that hack is transparent in terms of macro semantics. There's nothing about lambda that requires self-modifying code.
For code's sake, the Wikipedia article claims that function pointers make code self-modifying.
turbofail
yeah, just saying he's not ENTIRELY wrong
well, did he actually say that it "has to be self-modifying"?
quotemstr
turbofail: No. He is completely and unambiguously wrong. Utterly.
sepult
ever seen the replication part of a c program ?
turbofail
haven't actually read the thread
so i don't really know what he said
quotemstr
turbofail: Implementing a language feature behind the scenes using self-modifying code on a lower level doesn't make the high-level program itself self-modifying.
turbofail: Read it.
It's short. Mercifully short.
turbofail
yeah, he's pretty wrong
AimHere
That Mybrid guy has a bee in his bonnet about Lisp and Functional programming.
"Some hoittie toittie schools, where professors have very high opinions of themselves, very low opinion of students, who shall remain nameless, like UC Berkeley and MIT, require LISP as a first-year language so as to kill all pleasure one might think one derives from programming and switch to something more pleasurable, like theoretical physics."
quotemstr
"who shall remain nameless, like UC Berkeley and MIT..."
AimHere: The stupidity is normal, especially for Slashdot.
AimHere: It's the erudition and bombast mixed in with the stupidity that makes his guy exceptional.
AimHere
British CS guy who presumably failed a Lisp course or something
quotemstr
And now I regret breaking that promise to myself to not post on Slashdot anymore.

It's amazing.
The Supreme Court of the United States ruled today that it is not acceptable to sentence minors who have not committed murder to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Is anybody using mediawiki mode, or similar, to edit/maintain a wiki site? I'm digging through emacswiki and finding several different wiki modes. Curious to know if anybody has one working well.

Left crazies: "you have no right to free speech when it offends someone's diversity", "we can't build factories anywhere because it might kill a fish", "you're not allowed to build coal power stations, natural gas plants, nuclear power plants, wind turbines, or solar panels because they all have toxic chemicals"
But at least those crazies are harmless compared to the ones on the right.
damd: At much lower rates than the population at large.
damd
quotemstr: could it be that the slightly intelligent people are atheist while the most intelligent are religious?
that would be interesting
quotemstr
damd: I highly doubt that.
turbofail
well, donald knuth is religious... and john mccarthy isn't
quotemstr
damd: Look at rates of atheism in scientists. They're less religious than the population at large.
The more distinguished scientists are *even less* religious.
