the xcode .dmg contains more than one .mpkg that you can install. i only installed xcode, not webobjects. i think that's all that's nec, but wanted to make sure.
programble
madpickle: um, that code causes an error on startup
python-mode-map is void

is there a way to make lisp errors/stack traces less intrusive? Things that would be nice: 1) not having the buffer seize focus, 2) having it go away if I hit a key
googling is just providing me with lots of tips on how to debug lisp errors.
rryouumaa
you can mod the code
another nice thing would be putting it into sexp form
Derander
the thing that inspired this question was: I opened a customize group and hit a key by accident which prompted emacs to pop a half-screen window informing me that that was not allowed
I had to kill that buffer and then the window to get it to go away
wanders
It entered the debugger? Couldn't you just press q?
Derander
I'll check
interesting. now of course it just shows a message down at the bottom. I'll trigger an error some other way and get back to you
wanders: yes, I can just press q. wasn't aware of that keyboard shortcut
thanks, that makes it much more tolerable

wanders
You might also want to have a look at the debug-on-error and eval-expression-debug-on-error variables.
Derander
wanders: *that* is what I wanted!
thanks so much.
leo2007
rryouumaa: fwiw, i didn't install those webobjects.
rryouumaa
ok
delYsid
Remind me, what does emacs use for version control these days?
ml-n_
bzr afaik
delYsid
ah, thanks
ml-n_
but there is also git and cvs

what does it mean when there is a comma between keystokes in a keybinding string?
hmm, it seems to mean I mush press the comma

fledermaus, sword : y'all clearly aren't familiar with feckbot, the funniest bot on IRC
programble
i'm trying to set a binding in python-mode in my .emacs file
i get python-mode-map variable is void
how do i fix that?
offby1
programble: at the time you get that error, has python-mode been loaded?
programble
probably not..
how do i force it to load before that, or only run that after it is loaded?
offby1
that's probably the reason. Typically you put your binding-setting code on "python-mode-hook".
(add-hook python-mode-hook (lambda () (local-set-key (kbd "C-m") 'newline-and-indent))) e.g.
programble
lol knew exactly what i was doing O_O
thanks

what in bob's name is a "frito-lay"?
bremner
well, you know the expression "to get laid"?
offby1

That'd be like me having never heard of Cadbury

Cripes!

ggole: That should be their motto.

And of course they want me to log in to download the document. Bah.
quotemstr
"Enhanced water" WTF?
cvandusen
Also known as "heavy water".
ggole
quotemstr: take water, enhance it, and voila! Enhanced water.
I mean, duh
quotemstr
Man, I wish it were heavy water.
Then I could make ice cubes that sink.
programble
is there a default keybinding to switch to the scratch buffer?
fledermaus
getting your D‚O on?
hm, would deuterium ice cubes sink?
cvandusen
fledermaus: Only one way to find out!
fledermaus
fine. I'll get the balaclava helmets and bolt cutters, you go get the van warmed up.
just about, apparently.
assuming it was pure D‚O ice
quotemstr
God I hate my camera.
Blown highlights and black shadows in the _same photo_.
It has the dynamic range of a twig.
fledermaus
of course, getting pure deuterium oxide would be difficult.
quotemstr
fledermaus: They do sink, actually.
fledermaus
quotemstr: density of 1015 kg/m³ vs 1000 for water, according to wolfram
well, wolfram gave 1107 for deuterium oxide, I assumed a straightforward density increase for deuterium ice
ggole
"Heavy water is 10.6% denser than ordinary water, a difference which is difficult to notice in a sample of it (although it looks like water, it reportedly tastes slightly sweet[3])."
Tastes slightly sweet? Why on earth would that be?
quotemstr
Only toxic in huge amounts.
fledermaus
I have no idea.

how can i type a key combo and have emacs tell me what it is

i dunno if i should feel happy or enraged
i got a fta satellite dish for my parents
JordiGH
Is there a way to revert all buffers?
I'm using hg to move files around with buffers visiting them.
leo2007
folks, in my remote server, I have an external program that does some error parsing and output to stand-output. I want that info to be show in local emacs. Obviously tramp is one solution here. But I am thinking of using make-network-process?
cluck
on the good side it should receive one satellite but it actually gets signal from four
leo2007
Am I heading the right direction?
JordiGH
And I don't think vcs-mode has Mercurial Queues support.
ggole
JordiGH: select everything in ibuffer and make use of E?
JordiGH
leo2007: Why not use ssh?
ggole: Ecstasy?
ggole
The key
Actually never mind, there's a revert key: use V instead
JordiGH
Alright, I've been using C-x C-b
leo2007
JordiGH: like to elaborate?
cluck
on the bad side NOT A SINGLE GOOD CHANNEL among the 2631 available, and there's nothing emacs can do for me
JordiGH
leo2007: Put ssh into your compilation command. You're compiling, right?
leo2007: So you can do M-x compile <RET> ssh "command in remote machine" <RET>
leo2007: And the output will show in a compilation buffer.
leo2007: And of course you've got ssh keys set so that you won't get prompted for a password.
leo2007
that won't be a problem.
cluck
should have got them a T1 instead and taught them to use bittorrent
JordiGH
ggole: Nice, ibuffer works.
(Action) rebinds it to C-x C-b
leo2007
JordiGH: My remote server automatically builds the tree when there's any change. So I don't normally invoke compile.
JordiGH
leo2007: Well, then how do you normally get the stdout of that command outside of Emacs?
Also, is there a daemon in that remote server watching for any changes? o.Ô
leo2007
JordiGH: it is a shell tool. run it in terminal.
JordiGH
leo2007: I don't get it. You run a command or you don't?
leo2007
the build command is automatic running on the remote machine. I am writing the code in local emacs
JordiGH
leo2007: So... do you type stuff, hit enter, and then get stuff in stdout?
Or is there a daemon in the remote machine watching for changes?
leo2007
automatic
JordiGH
That wasn't an option!
(1) Do you type stuff, hit enter, and get output?
(2) Is there a daemon running in the remote machine?
leo2007
yes
JordiGH
...
legumbre
haha
(Action) is enjoying this
JordiGH
(Action) isn't.
But I'm laughing anyways.
cvandusen
It's like Abbott & Costello Meet the Build System.
JordiGH
Who's on remote server?
No, who(1) is.
cvandusen
ha!
legumbre
:)
cvandusen
(Action) gets the idea to create a user called whois on the remote server.
legumbre
ah, interesting. auto-revert-tail-mode claims to support remote files.
(Action) tries
JordiGH
leo2007
alright
legumbre
some files you just can't reach.
leo2007
I'll figure it out anyway.

crikey. the completion and context api help in eclipse are superb.

we've lost rgr to the eclipse camp
JordiGH
Losing a negative is a win.

he's already building abstract factories of great beauty
JordiGH
Like... those things in that Design Patterns book?
rgr
JordiGH: you never cease to amaze me with your self regard.

those
rgr
you really need to use eclipse if you program java and want to use stuf like mobile device SDKs.

it seems bp has turned to twitter in asking for ideas on how to stop the oil leak
rgr
and lets face it, jdee is barely installable never mind usable.

sheesh.

British Petroleum

where is the leak, at the sea floor or half way up?

e1f
next, an "ask slashdot" post
cvandusen

about 5 scousers with a syphon hose should cure it ...
JordiGH
Waitaminute.
cvandusen
Talk about marketing speak. This from their website: "Subsea efforts continue to focus on, firstly, progressing options to stop the flow of oil.."
e1f
largest spill in us history. 1m barrels a day
JordiGH
It wasn't even a US company who created this oil spill?
cvandusen
_progressing_options_
JordiGH
Some other country is fu*king up our neigbhouring ocean?
rgr
actually it was.
BP just owned the mining rights.
but dont let that alter your view ...
JordiGH
I guess it doesn't really matter who did it.
Good job, humans, being responsible for the greatest mass extinction in 65 million years!
e1f
bp is actually notorious for having accidents
typically one a year
cvandusen
I think they're set for the next 10
rgr
and dont let the fact that Union carbide poisoned 500,000 people in India colour your flag waving either ...
JordiGH
Is there anyone we can blame anyways? Even if it's not going to stop the spill?
rgr
BP were not to blame for the leak. They are taking responsibility however.
The makers of the seal and supporting materials were Transocean and Hallibuton. ....
ggole
Responsibility doesn't end at manufacturing faulty parts.
rgr
of course not, but I am just clariying that its not just down to shoddy old BP.
cvandusen
Wasn't there lack of oversite from the US government, as well?
quotemstr
'It's amazing how much you can cheat with black and white photography.
e1f
but it seems to happen a lot at bp mining operations
rgr
And in fairness to them they do seem to be pulling their finger out with regard to trying to solve the issue.
quotemstr
Does the red bring out the detail in the foreground? Blue in the background? Does the resulting picture look like a technocolor mess?
Desaturate the result and you have an awesome-looking black-and-white thing.
rgr
e1f: not really. if it was hundreds maybe. They are on of the biggest exploratory companies and things to happen.
