ams
i've been trying for years to write a pamphlet about free software...
like an A4 page, less...
legumbre
cluck: still, I shared the link with my lawyer friends.
ams
but either it gets really boring, or just to long..
madpickle
ams: you can be like those guys from watchtower who go door to door and annoy people.
legumbre
cluck: I don't think it's that hard to grasp, for non-geeks I mean.
cluck
legumbre: your lawyer friends will fight for the competition since it provides more jobs for them
*duh* :D
confounds
anyone seen the peepcode emacs screencast and recommend it?
legumbre
cluck: I'm sure they're not *that* evil
confounds
anyone see the peepcode emacs screencast & recommend it? (i just asked but my irc client crashed - not sure if message was sent)

jlf
confounds: i haven't seen it, but the creator frequents this channel
bozhidar
confounds: I've seen it
confounds
jlf: thanks. bozhidar what'd you think?
bozhidar
there was little for me to learn there, but I've been using Emacs for about five years
I think that the screencast will be of great help for newcomers to Emacs
or people that haven't used many aspects of it
there are good configuration tips and examples in the screencast
it's complemented by the emacs starter kit
cluck
ams: well, i can tell you WHY, but you won't like it
bozhidar
developed also by Phil(technomancy)
damd
ams: since you live in sweden, i'll ask you... when i send back the FSF copyright assignment crap, how many stamps should i put on the envelope and what kind should they be?
ams
cluck: truth hurts?
damd: uhm, depends on how many assignments?
damd: international stamps? cause it is .. USA..
confounds
bozhidar: okay, thanks a lot. sounds worthwhile, i've only done a bit of the emacs tutorial so far, so i'm totally new to it
damd
ams: it's just one A4 paper
ams
damd: uh, letter paper...
damd: the fsf sends letter paper, not a4...
you even get a cute envelope.
bozhidar
confounds: you're likely to benefit greatly from the screencast then
damd
looked pretty A4-ish to me
ams
i just put one stamp on mine.
bozhidar
make sure to have a look at the starter kit as well
ams
was one page too..
bozhidar
it's good example of a modular emacs configuration
confounds
bozhidar: thanks i will. just curious, what language do you use it for mostly?
bozhidar
originally I used it mostly for C/C++
then for PHP, Perl & Ruby
now I use it mostly for Lisp(Emacs, Common, Clojure)
confounds
the whole enchilada then
cool.

bozhidar
but I do some occasional hacking in scripting languages as well
ams
damd: ask the cute chick at the ice store? ;-)
bozhidar
it's also my preferred editor for markup languages(HTML, XML, ...)
ams
damd: frankly, i'm not sure now.. hell,i'm wondering if the post machine ate my assignment that i sent...
bozhidar
for writing documents(with LaTeX) and many other things...
damd
ams: after having looked it up, i think one stamp should suffice, the "outside of europe" kind
madpickle
and that, ladies and germs, is why you use your work's office franking machine.
damd
i read this at http://www.posten.se/c/postguideLetterWorldNotEurope
ams
damd: i think they call it international ones..
bozhidar
confounds: Emacs is really great and I'm sure that in time you'll come to this very same conclusion yourself :-)
ams
damd: damn has the post office fu*k sh*t up here...
damd
ams: on posten.se i could choose between "inrikes", "brev europa" and "brev utanför europa"
ams
damd: ah
damd
the price seems to be the same though
12 kr
confounds
bozhidar: sounds like yeah :) just a matter of getting into it. i'll check out the screencast. did you force yourself to do everything in it when you were starting out?
bozhidar
confounds: no, it was an incremental process for me
the more time passed, the more unwilling I become to do anything without it
ams
you cheat on emacs?!
bozhidar
it will be helpful for you, though, to force yourself to use the Emacs navigational keybindings instead of the standard ones
ams: I was young and foolish
ams
best tip...rm ~/.emacs
and use that.
confounds
bozhidar: right, the tutorial had suggested that. will do. have to ween myself off textmate.
madpickle
e1f: that's beautiful.
bozhidar
e1f: nice topic, instant classic
e1f
thank you. except i'm ripping off a quote from 'the secret pilgrim' by john le carre which i'm currently reading (replace 'emacs' with 'love')
damd
is (setq x 1 y 2) any faster than (progn (setq x 1) (setq y 2)) ?
ams
the later is `slower'
damd
even when compiled?
e1f
the quote works because emacs=love
ams
damd: when compile, those are equal.
depending on things..
cluck
e1f: i think you're confusing love with marriage
ams
damd: turn on svt24...
damd
ams: i don't have a TV at the moment, recently moved from my parents
ams
bloak goes into exchange office, and takes out 185k in cash..
damd: ah
madpickle
swedish soap opera
*yawn*
chrisb
(Action) missed the quote, i think
darn connections
cvandusen
chrisb: see the topic
chrisb
cvandusen: thanks
(Action) like john le carre
cvandusen
(Action) needs to read more by him
chrisb
i just finished the one about the chechen refugee, the english banker and the german lawyer
jlf
that quotation is patently false
chrisb
jlf: patent number?
jlf: and we're against software patents in general
ams
nah, sleep.
night hackers
e1f
there's always a nay-sayer in the bunch
jlf
no there isn't
e1f
probably because jlf hasn't experienced emacs
madpickle
jlf is a brief fan to the max.
jlf
(Action) stares blankly
legumbre
are you... experienced?
e1f
of course, we're paid professionals
bpalmer
I wouldn't say jlf is so experienced, but he's already earned himself a gold watch, if you know what I mean.

yonkeltron
I LOVE IT
cluck: i sent it to my gf
cluck: she asked me if this is what i do all day at work
i really wish inkscape had brushes
like illustrator
madpickle
yonkeltron: and surely you told her that you read reddit and hang out on irc?
yonkeltron
yes.
the irc part is true
reddit, less so
madpickle
at the end of the day, you goof off most of the day.
Sketch
so you're a sysadmin?
madpickle
or just a developer
lots of goofing off to be had as a developer.
cluck
yonkeltron: cheapskate, at least get her the T http://www.zazzle.com/rawr_dino_tshirt-235781568174132756
yonkeltron
haha
no
i'm a developer
but i'm in a bunch of channels
cluck
yonkeltron: Brushes - There's no brushes palette in Inkscape yet, but you can have an editable path with any brush path applied. Select the brush path (called pattern), copy it to clipboard, then select the path you will apply brush to (called skeleton), open Path Effects (Ctrl+Shift+7), select "Path along path", click Apply, select "Single, stretched", and click the Paste button to apply the
pattern. http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Inkscape_for_Adobe_Illustrator_users
yonkeltron
and cluck yeah, i know. it's not the same, though
cluck
seriously, have people suddenly forgot how to use google search?
yonkeltron
i google all the fu*king time!
jlf
what google needs is an easy-to-use web interface
cluck
jlf: ooooohhhh... I KNOW, I KNOW! like bing!! right?!?

Hello all, I'm having trouble getting M-S-RET in a terminal (with emacs -nw) .. gnome-terminal gets C-M-j, xterm gets S-return, and rxvt gets M-RET . . . other key bindings seem to work fine in both rxvt and xterm, what's going on?
cluck
yonkeltron: regarding the "why can't i just point and click?" thank software patents
yonkeltron
cluck: actually? that's the real reason?
domino14
#vim banned me
yonkeltron
domino14: actually?
cluck
yonkeltron: probably, i know that's the reason why we can't have intuitive path manipulation like flash (animator/cs/whatchamaycallit)
yonkeltron
cluck: gosh, that's fu*kin annoying
domino14
yeah cuz i made fun of tpope
yonkeltron
domino14: well. whatever.
domino14: we'll always love you, i guess.
unless you pulled a hans reiser or some sh*t
then there'd be some discussion
technomancy
there's a pretty highly-ranked article on programming reddit about how tpope is a douche
or how he acts like one on IRC anyway
yonkeltron
cluck: i really fancy inkscape. i do. i just get annoyed when i try to follow illustrator tutorials and the like and it never quite works out
like when i go to design a poster or something
benny
technomancy: you mean where some idiot gave false information and tpope correctly pointed out what an idiot he was?
cluck
yonkeltron: and despite all there's xaralx
technomancy
benny: sure, being correct and being a douche are not mutually exclusive.
benny
for me tpope is a hero and I will celebrate him as such!
yonkeltron
cluck: i dunno if i'd want to use that
technomancy
everyone has bad days
yonkeltron
cluck: i like inkscape a ton. it makes me feel good
technomancy
benny: anyway, all I meant to say was that was what this article was about.
not whether or not it's true
benny
I hope the thread backfires, no point in having people that can't read get lots of hits on their blog :-P
bpalmer
(Action) has never heard of tpope before this, but correctness alone should not a hero make.
technomancy
bpalmer: what? you mean you don't idolize ams?
bpalmer
yeeeessss, rather. (Except he's quite often wrong, but won't admit it).
benny
especially his clock
bpalmer
hmm, gnus is on git nowadays.
how long to nngit?
technomancy
bpalmer: I have been waiting for nngit for ages
yonkeltron
nngit?
bpalmer
as we all know, life, the universe, and everything can be modelled on usenet. nngit would model git commits as newsgroup messages.
benny
maybe it's like gitk, where the summary is your history
yonkeltron
interesting

[In the distance, you hear a dog bark]
Gla
hey people, we've been working on a project to create real-time communities on the web that are easily accessable and useable outside the realm of IRC. We've created a test group for emacs at http://tap.info/group/emacs , which you can join and link to your freenode account for moderation credentials. Let me know what you guys think, we're focused on bringing technical/software projects a real-time community presence on the web.
would be great to hear what you guys think
hober
Gla: doesn't seem to work very well in Chrome
leo2007
hober: do you know how to use the url package to upload a file to imagebin.org?
Gla
hober: really?
should work perfectly in Chrome for sure
