wgreenhouse
jabot: maybe initial-major-mode is being modified twice in your init process
try emacs -q -e "(setq initial-major-mode 'text-mode)"
jabot
doesn't work
wgreenhouse
hmph.
r4yner
aartist: pass it 3 instead of "03"
wgreenhouse
my version is
jabot
shows Symbol's function definition is void: \(setq\ initial-major-mode\ \'text-mode\)
wgreenhouse
jabot
: let me try again
hevalbaranov
Is it possible to set horizontal width for a file, using file variables? I'm writing plain-text documents and truncating lines manually.
wgreenhouse
probably a shell quotation error on my part
hevalbaranov: you could set fill-column on a per-file basis

jabot
hevalbaranov: auto-fill-mode perhaps?
aartist
r4yner: I still get the same results. I like to have monthly or yearly view of my agenda rather than just weekly view
r4yner
aartist: hmm. make sure you have an agenda buffer open already when you do it maybe?
aartist: if that's no good, M-x org-agenda-month-view , when the agenda buffer is open, will take you to month view for the current month
jabot
wgreenhouse: if i start it mit --eval instead of -e it doesnt show said message
aartist
r4yner: thanks. It did the job
r4yner: is it possible to add the 'key' while viewing agenda?
jabot
but *scratch* is still in lisp-mode
hevalbaranov
wgreenhouse: I've set fill-column value but it does not affect.
aartist
r4yner: also, how I can see the month-view for next month?
r4yner
aartist: for your 2nd question, right and left arrow keys should do it
jabot
hevalbaranov: hit M-q
for filling a paragraph
or turn on auto-fill-mode
r4yner
aartist: the answer to your first question is yes but i am rusty
hevalbaranov
jabot: m-q it truncates just one line by regardless of fill-column value
aartist
r4yner: I was surprised to change the dates in files, via agenda-view
jabot
hevalbaranov: m-q should not truncate but insert line breaks
and for a whole paragraph
r4yner
(define-key org-agenda-mode "m" 'org-agenda-month-view) ?
hevalbaranov
google doesn't return any satisfying results for emacs and auto wapping
jabot
try it on a loooong line
Colloguy
how do I convert the result of (point), a byte position, to columns and lines?
r4yner
aartist: yeah i used to like the agenda when i first started using org, but then the keybindings changed and i just stopped using it
jabot
hevalbaranov: it's called filling within emacs

r4yner
aartist: which just goes to show how lazy i am
jabot
hevalbaranov: try setting fill-column to a ridiculously small value
and then hit m-q
r4yner
aartist: that (define-key ...) i wrote down is wrong
aartist: see http://xahlee.org/emacs/keyboard_shortcuts.html to set keys for a particular mode
aartist
somehow that site is blocked for me.
r4yner
aartist: haha
aartist
r4yner: well, I am going to study : M-x customize-variable RET org-agenda-custom-commands ( Blocking came from my workplace, rather than personally :-)
r4yner
aartist: (add-hook 'org-agenda-mode-hook (lambda () (define-key org-agenda-mode-map (kbd "m") 'org-agenda-month-view)))
hevalbaranov
jabot: thanks. is it possible to apply m-q to whole document?
r4yner
aartist: yeah that site has some nudity and stuff on it, amidst pictures of mathematical shapes. it's just a random collection
aartist
r4yner: that key-binding doesn't work ,
technomancy
heh; you have to wonder if they're blocking xah's site for the porno or just because he's xah
jabot
hevalbaranov: there's fill-region
rgr
whose blocking Xah's site?
r4yner
aartist: it should if you kill the agenda buffer and reload it
rgr: aartist's work
jabot
hevalbaranov: http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/emacs/Specifying-File-Variables.html#Specifying-File-Variables
rgr
a shame. an interesting site. An interesting guy. good elisp tutorial.
hevalbaranov
Do we have to define file variables at the first line of documents?
rgr
arg, I cant deal with clipboard issues anymore moving between emacs and irssi in a term. back to erc for me.
jabot
hevalbaranov: no. read on :)
rgr
Evaluate this using C-x C-e with cursor at closing bracket --> (info "(emacs)Specifying File Variables")
would someone be so kind as to /msg me so I can see if my osd is still working in erc
hevalbaranov
jabot; I will put file variables in my resume document and it's better to put them in the footer
rgr

erc-current-nick is a compiled Lisp function in `erc.el'.

hober: ok, my site is a google blog at blogger, so it shouldn't ever be down for any major lengths of time (if at all)
rutski
This is really weird, whenever I open my objc code now, it forces me into "Objc Abbrev" mode
which does more forced-auto-formatting it seems
and I don't know how to get out of it
I didn't change anything either :-p
wasn't doing this yesterday
nm, put (abbrev-mode 0) in my objc-mode-hook
that fixed it
I still find it odd though
ologNation
I want to use a "queue" in an elisp program. Should I use elib, or can someone recommend something else?
quotemstr
Grr.
Why hasn't anyone covered Benny Goodman's songs using decent recording technology? Great songs, awful fidelity from the 30s.
benzap
hello, I want to install an auto-completion script, but I have no idea where i'm supposed to install it
legumbre
,install
fsbot
legumbre: install is [0] To install a <file>.el, save it to, say ~/elisp
[1] add to the beginning of ~/.emacs: (add-to-list 'load-path "~/elisp"),
[2] now FOLLOW THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS IN THE FILE, typically adding (require '<file>) to the end of ~/.emacs, ..[Type ,more]

[3] For packages comprising many files, first download to a directory like ~/elisp/packages/ and follow the included instructions,

[5] the site-wide emacs extension directory is usually `/usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp'

howdy. what do blogger users here like for doing stuff via emacs?

Um...
dash: There's a plugin for Firefox called It's All Text! that lets you use Emacs to edit text boxes, which would be nice for web-based blogging engines.
dash
sure
but then i gotta open my web browser. ;)

i guess i'll go see if there's a channel with human emacs users in it

fsbot
From memory, WebloggerMode is at http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?WebloggerMode
cluck
i knew it was there somewhere

how do I run an elisp script?
is it something along the lines of emacs --eval script.el ?

dmhouse
Can I get M-x man to default to manpages from chapter 3? (I.e. definitions of C library functions.)
benzap
cluck: i think emacs --script install.el worked
cluck
legumbre: javascript won the web2.0, emacs will win win web3 =)
fsbot: tell benzap about install
fsbot
benzap: I heard install is [0] To install a <file>.el, save it to, say ~/elisp
[1] add to the beginning of ~/.emacs: (add-to-list 'load-path "~/elisp"),

hi , I'm somewhat lasy when it comes to emacs 'configuration menus' , and in particular what has to do with colour-schemas. Is there a magical clicking way of trying different colour - schemas for different major modes ?
cluck
legumbre: i fixed it for you emacs delivers!!!
:)

is it possible to edit Windows files having those ugly carriage returns (^M) everywhere?
i do not mean convert them to UNIX line endings, only to hide the CR
jabot
paseante: open them with the correct coding system selected
paseante
i forgot a "without" in the first sentence
jabot
rgr
could some kind erc user please confirm that (erc-current-nick) does indeed return your nick.

yes
rgr
strange. returning nil here in an emacs -nw.

are you in an erc buffer?
rgr
yes
legumbre
strange indeed
rgr
scratch that. user bork.
thanks.

hey. anyone know if i can merge a change set with git visually in emacs?

I heard git is [0] a dVCS, notable for its speed: <http://git.or.cz/>, <http://emacswiki.org/wiki/Git> and #git
[1] see magit,

jabot
yes
w00tz
In emacs, how do I get the information about the current display on emacs? Primarily what are the exact settings on face-attribute?
JordiGH
w00tz: M-x describe-face, I think.

Let me try, thanks JordiGH

dmhouse
w00tz: C-u C-x = also gets information about the face/character at point
rryouumaa
,backups is also if emacs backups stop working, maybe you initialized a version control system outside of emacs, and a ridiculously poorly conceived default made emacs stop making backups without any action on your part. see vc-make-backup-files.
fsbot

[->] hmm, MultiTTYSupport is [0] at http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?MultiTTYSupport
[1] If you only need X, `make-frame-on-display' might be for you...,
[2] In Emacs 23,
[3] emacs --daemon then emacsclient -t (text) or emacsclient -c (graphical)
cluck
i'm tempted to add an "is also rryouumaa got pwned by this" but since i know the pain of dealing with 'smart' AIs first hand i'll refrain myself :)

,elib
fsbot
Elib is, like, the GNU Emacs Lisp Library, manual at http://theory.uwinnipeg.ca/gnu/elib/elib_toc.html . Elib provides several data structures, like (various) trees, stacks, queues, doubly-linked-lists, etc.
phobbs
wow
that's awesome
ologNation
(Action) wonders if it would be helpful to write tests and docs for elib.
phobbs
=/ avl trees, not red-black trees
ologNation
(Action) likes elib
phobbs, I know.
I'm really digging it.
I installed the source and it's really pretty. Very simple.
rullie
hi folks, flyspell-buffer gives me: No such file or directory, ispell. I'm on 23.1.90.1 x86_64-apple-darwin. Any suggestion?
writer
rullie: install ispell
phobbs
you need the ispell program
yeah
rullie
but locate-library ispell says /Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/Resources/lisp/textmodes/ispell.elc
or does that not mean anything at all
yo?
