eraldo
kodein: may I ask you to guide me durring bbdb installation?
I downloaded the source and read the INSTALL file
but as it seems there are parameters like where gnus and co are located
and I am not sure what to enter there
kodein
I can't say I remember much of how I installed it, but it was probably just the old ./configure, make, (make install) procedure
eraldo
when I try to issue the 'make all' command... I get feedback 'nothing to do'
http://pastebin.com/iYYku0FP
kodein
eraldo: well, works for me: http://pastebin.com/Y3S5xDg4
shader
how do you change emacs' font?
kodein
,,fonts
fsbot
[->] font is [0] see http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/SetFonts
[1] http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rf10/pstex/latexcommands.htm,
[2] http://ctan.org/tex-archive/info/Free_Math_Font_Survey/survey.html
kodein
[0] applies, methinks.
eraldo
kodein: any idea what I could do?

kodein
well, what happens when you run the same commands I did? or rather, like, show me the output of ./configure at least
eraldo
kodein
the message you get might also imply that you've actually already have run make.
eraldo
I doubt that ^^
kodein
do a make clean
then run make again
eraldo
I have no idea why but it looks good
and now I move the "lisp/" directory to ~/.emacs.d/plugins/bbdb/lisp/ ?
is that correct
kodein
yeah, sounds about right
then you add that dir to your load-path
eraldo
how can I tell that dir path to be recursive?
kodein
http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/LoadPath#toc1 by doing something like this, I guess. I haven't really bothered with it myself.
eraldo
it worked
it is installed now...
kodein
great :)
konr
Is there a web-based org-mode editor?
eraldo
kodein: is there a beginnertutorial for bbdb somewhere ^^
kodein
I don't know really, I mostly refer to the info files and the mode help
the former is also available at http://bbdb.sourceforge.net/bbdb.html
mustelo
is there a way to jump to matching paren/brace?
eraldo
kodein: thank you I found what I wanted (there). what app/tool are you using to handle you emails?
kodein
eraldo: I use wanderlust, myself
unicoder
The docs are telling me that revert-buffer "is bound to s-u"
but I have no idea what that means
I don't see any C- or M- prefixes there
(Action) scratches head
damd
that's "super"
often the "windows key"
unicoder
oh, wah
(Action) is on OS X, with an apple keyboard

damd
but s-u isn't bound to revert-buffer here
unicoder
interesting
quotemstr
Yay
My Lisp now have a macroexpand.

I have a rather annoying white bar on the side of my emacs window, covering the last two columns or so of text. Any idea what caused it, or how to get rid of it?
I can't see the last letter of most lines, or the \ to show that the line wraps
quotemstr
tty or graphical Emacs?
shader
graphical
quotemstr
,-Q ?
fsbot
quotemstr: hmm, -q is if you start emacs with "emacs -q" and the problem goes away, it's YOUR FAULT; check your .emacs. If "emacs -q" has problems and "emacs -Q" does not, it's caused by your distro or local admin.
shader
nope, it's not there
any ideas on what I could have messed up?
quotemstr
,binarysearch
fsbot
binarysearch -- Try using a binary search on .emacs to locate the cause of a problem. That is, split the file in two, either by commenting half of it out or by using M-x eval-region ononly half of it (starting from emacs -Q). Then split the problematic half in two and repeat etc.
shader
ok
sounds like fun ;)
is there a way to execute the sexp after point, instead of before?
quotemstr
C-M-f C-x C-e :-)
shader
lol
jordanb
I had an amazing rant for you guys but I posted it in the wrong channel.
shader
ok, so I don't get it...
I did emacs -Q
and then loaded my emacs file, and eval-buffered it
and no issue
actually, I take that back
I evaled each sexp individually
no issue, so I eval-buffer
no issue
I reload emacs -Q, and eval buffer without evalling individually, and the white bar shows up
so, the issue seems to be when I disable the scrollbar, menu bar, and tool bar
if I execute the lines individually, it works fine
but as a group, it breaks
so, any idea why executing the lines together works differently then evalling them individually?
yugioh
Hi people. How can I programmatically erase the contents of a buffer I created ?
shader
the entire contents?
yugioh
mm, erase-buffer ?
yeh
offby1
I have truly marvelous rant, however this channel is too small to contain it.
jordanb
Heh
So apparently according to Sarah Palin, there are two Foxes.
shader
yugioh: what's wrong with erase-buffer?
yugioh
oh, erase-buffer acts on current buffer
jordanb
Fox News: The reporters of unvarnished Truth, and Fox Hollywood, the makers of the Family Guy and associated sitcoms.
upward
Which one jumped over the lazy dog?
yugioh
shabble, I was looking for a way to erase a non-current buffer
offby1
make it current, then erase it.
many emacs functions only work on the current buffer; that's how you use them
yugioh
mm, ok. I should save the old current though, to restore it after the erase, rght ?
jordanb
Meanwhile, Sarah Palin has been making the rounds of the media with which she has so many issues, including "Fox Hollywood," pitching them a "docudrama" about Alaska.
^-- haha
yugioh
mm save-excursion
offby1
no, ,,df with-current-buffer
fsbot
with-current-buffer is a Lisp macro in `subr.el'.
(with-current-buffer BUFFER-OR-NAME &rest BODY)
Execute the forms in BODY with BUFFER-OR-NAME temporarily current.
BUFFER-OR-NAME must be a buffer or the name of an existing buffer.
The value returned is the value of the last form in BODY. See ..[Type ,more]
shader
yay macros
yugioh
ok thanks, will look into it
quotemstr
GAH!

i'm trying to install the org-mode.el6 port on freebsd, but it keeps pulling in emacs (gtk) although emacs-nox11 is already installed. anyone familiar with freebsd and emacs can suggest a way to install org-mode.el6 so it recognizes emacs-nox11 and does not pull in emacs?
offby1
yugioh: hm, on second thought, it looks like save-excursion will indeed work.
yugioh
offby1, yeh, but with-current-buffer looks more elegant. Trying it at the moment
offby1
wow, I haven't used freebsd in years
yugioh: whatever works :)
shader
though it sounds like with-current-buffer is exactly what he was looking for
because it handles the saving, switching, and restoring for him
offby1
apparently, save-excursion does too, although I never knew that
yugioh
man, I find lisp surprisingly logical, which is worry in itself
shader
really?
offby1
looks like save-excursion saves even more
yugioh: it is indeed worrying
I recommend you consult a physician

m-x doctor
yugioh
haha
jordanb
FreeBSD is for lispertarians who think RMS is a socialist saboteur.
shader
what's wrong with lisp?
jordanb
yugioh: The road of lisp ends with flying an airplane into an IRS office.
parolang
jordanb: yeesh :)
yugioh
LOOL
I fail to see the relation
or rather the causal link
parolang
mad as hell and ain't gonna take it anymore :)
jordanb
Lispertarians tend to develop an unreasonablness about them as they come to regard reality as being insufficiently correct.
shader
heh
so does with-current-buffer not leave the mark, etc. where they were?
jordanb
Do they know anything about the guy who shot at the pentagon.
?
I was *SO* hoping it was Eric Raymond.
quotemstr
He was a right-wing nutter.
jordanb
He's too much of a coward to actually make good on any of his threats though.
quotemstr
Check the New York Times.
And I don't hope it was ESR. I don't hope that for anyone.
jordanb
You gotta hand it to airplane guy, he was one lispertarian nerd who wasn't all internet di*k swinging, he actually eventually went through with it.
yugioh
Do you recall the threats of Raymond towards some debian project leader ?
jordanb
Props to him for that.
quotemstr
The airplane guy was a lisper?
jordanb
Yeah, he threatened to shoot Bruce Perens.
yugioh
right! And Bruce disclosed the threats to the lists.
jordanb
Probably. His website sure did read like something a lisper would write.
Bruce is a bit of a drama queen himself though.
yugioh
encyclopedia dramatica links him as 'pu**y' :P
jordanb
You don't call the cops because of an internet threat from a known blowhard.
quotemstr
yugioh: ED doesn't like him at all.
jordanb: Sure you do.
jordanb: That's one way to make blowhards stop being that way.
jordanb
That clearly worked on Raymond.
Supposedly his wife is a lawyer who helps get him out of sh*t his mouth gets him into.
yugioh
LOL
this whole drama is amusing
fledermaus
esr is always spouting on about how he's going to defy local gun laws and carry a firearm.
I'm tempted to punt copies of those rants to immigration next time he's scheduled to be cisatlantic
quotemstr
ESR is a rightie?
yugioh
has he written any open source s/w at all ?
jordanb
http://encyclopediadramatica.com/DO_IT_FAGGOT <-- This was *MADE* for ESR.
fledermaus
yugioh: mostly he talks about how great he is.
DraX
he was involved with fetchmail
fledermaus
and tries to take over projects and reimplement them in python
DraX
that's about all i know about
jordanb
Yeah he didn't even write fetchmail, he forked somebody else's project and added bugs.
http://encyclopediadramatica.com/File:Fais-le.jpg <-- haha
http://encyclopediadramatica.com/File:8ball_says_do_it.jpg <- Haha

magic 8-ball says ====> CERTAINLY
yugioh
at least his book, the bazaar and the cathedral(?) is it any good ?
fledermaus
not really.
parolang
Hmm...esr also wrote parts of emacs, remember :)
fledermaus
overly trite "analysis" masquerading as insight.
jordanb
That was the book that made a thousand buisness managers think that they can get people on the internet to write their software for free for them.
parolang
yugioh: It was original for the time, IMHO.
fledermaus
parolang: you mean the bit where he rips off aesop?
yugioh
mm ok. But perhaps it is over referenced nowadays ?
fledermaus
not _terribly_ original
jordanb
It was always weak.
The central analogy is totally idiotic.
parolang
I think most of the claims have turned out false :)
fledermaus
it doesn't stand up to scrutiny, it's just aimed at bandwagoneers and wannabes
jordanb
Bazaars are where things get sold, nothing more or less.

And cathedrals weren't built through top-down archtecture.
They were built by thousands of craftsmen, many working pretty independently.
This is espeically true of Gothic cathedrals.

quotemstr: Clearly there was a disagreement between spire-makers.
parolang
But IMHO the GNU Manifesto is a lot more striking for all sorts of reasons.
quotemstr
jordanb: Actually, they were built 200 years apart. It's still amusing though.
yugioh
heh, I remember a pic of Eric with some really hot chick kissing him. That was a huge shock to me. Hold on if I can find the link
