I want to pipe a region of a buffer into an external shell command and securely escape the command line parameters to that command. Currently I have this which creates temporary files: http://github.com/avar/nopaste/blob/master/nopaste.el
(some old code of mine)
Isn't there a better way to do this?
mnemonikk
avar: why dont you use call-process-region? is the nopaste command can take its text from stdin you would get by without a temporary file. also, you'd give the arguments as a list, no need to quote anything as it's never touched by the shell, which you shouldn't need here at all.
ish
Is there a way in emacs to get some context sensitive help? Say I've just typed "memset(" and can't remember the order of arguments, etc..

results in a Man mode (manpage browsing) buffer. See variable
`Man-notify-method' for what happens when the buffer is ready.
If a buffer already exists for this man page, it will display immediately.
To specify a man page from a certain section, type SUBJECT(SECTION) or ..[Type ,more]

why must my emacs server stop responding to emacsclient sometimes, grrr

anyone know if there's a way to do something like $(PID) in a Makefile to get the pid of a make process? (i want to use it to generate unique filenames)
GSaldana
jlf: is it easier to create unique filenames based on timestamps?
jlf
i tried that first but i'm launching multiple processes per second on the host
i couldn't figure out why i was getting only one log file :)
fledermaus
why not just use $$ from the shell in your rule?
jlf
yeah i was just thinking of $(shell echo $$)
fledermaus
why echo?
jlf
is $$ available directly in the rules regardless of whether make was invoked from csh/bash/etc?
fledermaus
why not just use $$$$ directly in your rule?
jlf
uhhh.. no reason :)
(Action) <= make noob
fledermaus
if it's a bourne compliant shell, yes
if it's not, your rules probably aren't going to work _anyway_, so you have a bigger problem
s/bourne/POSIX/
jlf
it's a pretty baroque Makefile i'm editing that works for bash/tcsh now. i'll try $$$$ in the rule and fall back to $(shell $$) or something if that doesn't work.

i have found a problem with recentf where you start emacs and emacs tries to connect to the previously loaded files
so it's a bit slower than usual
at startup anyway
if you use recentf and you see those problems, you know what's happening

When I run byte-force-recompile, Emacs only compiles some .el files in the directory I specify. I have hundreds of .el files, but it only compiles 24 of them.
Does anyone know why that might be happening?
LordXe-gnu
dumb question, but do you have write permissions as the user running emacs in those dirs?
codyrobbins
LordXe-gnu: Yes, I do.
LordXe-gnu
ok, was worth a check ;)
codyrobbins
Hehe :)
LordXe-gnu
well, that command says it only rebuilds if there is already a .elc file " Command: Recompile every `.el' file in DIRECTORY that already has a `.elc' file." so if the other .el's have not already been compiled, it doesn't sound like that's what you want
there's also byte-recompile-directory
that one doesn't mention having .elc files already

g'day all. When I run emacsformacosx.com emacs by clicking the application icon, it does not pick up my PATH modifications from .bashrc_profile. How can I fix this ?

Emacs adds a trailing newline to every file I save. This can be reproduced in Fundamental mode. *-save-hooks are both nil, save-buffer and basic-save-buffer are unadvised. Any ideas?
tsp
It's probably normal. Ed does that as well
technomancy
,dv require-final-newline
fsbot
Whether to add a newline automatically at the end of the file.
A value of t means do this only when the file is about to be saved.
A value of `visit' means do this right after the file is visited.
A value of `visit-save' means do it at both of those times. ..[Type ,more]
technomancy
keep in mind that if you turn that off, you might have trouble editing crontabs
tsp
cron is that unforgiving?
technomancy
cron has this Awesome Feature" that if the file doesn't end in a newline, the last line gets ignored!
tsp
all crons? or just certain ones
technomancy
vixie cron, which is pretty widespread.
ennui
technomancy, thanks. The Starter Kit set this one to 't'.
e1f
people who edit crontabs with emacs deserve it

what are you supposed to edit them with?

something else
technomancy
tsp: get your sysadmin to do it.

I'll probably set up an emacs just to get 10 *shell* buffers with edbrowse in them, talk about weird uses for emacs
e1f
what is edbrowse
tsp
/bin/ed with a browser bolted on
I've got 12 of them open now in various screen windows, I probably had 20 or 30 earlier before I cleared them out
mjrosenb
hrmm, if you C-x C-c emacs, with an N modified buffers, it will prompt you N+1 times, the last being do you want to quit with unmodified buffers. is there any way of getting it to not give that final prompt?
e1f
of course!
mjrosenb
sweet!
tsp
I want to find a way of integrating all these tools. I work in windows, but spend 95% of my time in a shell over ssh
mjrosenb
(Action) supposes he should have asked for the elisp / function to re-bind C-x C-c to
tsp
been trying for years and something always draws me back to windows. usually winamp or browsing a site that edbrowse can't handle
mjrosenb
tsp: when edbrowse fails, what do you use?
tsp: also, what version of winamp?
tsp
winamp 5.5 something, and IE or firefox
HandyGandy
Hey in Gnome, I'm trying to paste into the command buffer but the buffer vanishes.
tsp
I've got global hotkeys set up, winamp doesn't get in my way at all
mjrosenb
(Action) refuses to use winamp versions after 2.95
e1f
c-u 1 c-x s should save all your buffers
tsp
what's wrong with > 2.95?
e1f
(Action) used to use winamp until he discovered itunes
mjrosenb
tsp: they changed the interface, and added garbage for playing movies
e1f
(Action) then bought a mac
tsp
changed the interface? z/x/c/v/b still work
e1f
HandyGandy: what do you mean by 'command buffer'? and 'in Gnome'
tsp
prev, play, pause, stop, next
mjrosenb
anyhow, it doesn't matter, since i haven't used windows in 5 years
tsp
How does emacs fit into your setups?
mjrosenb
i use it for editing, building and vcs
HandyGandy
elf, I'm running in a Gnome desktop and sigh I can't remember what the buffer is the one line buffeer on the bottom of emacs for entering commands ( M-x ... ) and parameters.
e1f
ah the mini buffer
tsp
HandyGandy: minibuffer?
HandyGandy
tsp: exactly.
tsp
The problem with Linux for me is that there's no integration between one part and the next, even in a basic way. A perfect example is an email client
e1f
when you say it disappears, it goes away completely so the last line is the modeline?
tsp
if I get an email with a link in it, I have to copy/paste the link then browse to it
e1f
don't you use emacs to read your email?
tsp
right now TB on windows
when I was using Linux for that I was using mutt
mjrosenb
tsp: thunderbird has integration with firefox
tsp
if I press enter on a link it opens in IE, which is what I want
e1f
tsp: might want to try mutt under cygwin
tsp
but windows is just unstable
