And Firefox to IE in Wine.
Then hide the cyanide.
technomancy
tromey: I realized I can't launch Emacs from the concurrency branch unless I give it the --debug-init option
if I leave it off it fails, but re-enabling it makes the problem disappear, so I can't debug it
bpalmer
technomancy: what, you expect to be able to start a program? Your faith in technology is astounding.
technomancy
tromey: anyway, if there's anything I can do to help debug let me know
bpalmer
technomancy: you might try instrumenting your .emacs
and of course try with --no-site-file
technomancy
fledermaus
pom pom pom
technomancy
never seen that --debug-init-makes-it-work thing though; made me smile
fledermaus
so, anybody here actually use elim? If so, tried the new notification stuff yet?

bpalmer
I think ersatzmaus does; he was on pretty recently
fledermaus
pff, that fake!
technomancy
fledermaus: I'm going to switch soon!
jrockway
debug-init sets a flag, right?
clearly the bug checks the status of that flag
(when debugging (work-correctly))
killown
i am trying set it in .emacs (add-to-list ‘load-path “~/.emacs.d/”) and i am got the erro >> An error has occurred while loading /home/linux/.emacs': Symbol's value as variable is void: ‘load-path
anyone help me?
fledermaus
technomancy: just wondering if anyone had tried the notification stuff yet, since it's a tricky UI thing I was wondering if there was any feedback, will probably need refining
jrockway
you need a '

killown: "smart" quotes aren't
jrockway
not whatever weird character you pasted in
technomancy
fledermaus: I'll see if I can take a look soon. I'm also interested in the reconnect logic; what's the status there?
killown
ohhh thanks man
JordiGH
How do people type those quotes anyways_
?
killown
jrockway
JordiGH: cut-n-paste from wordpress
bpalmer
killown: well, it won't do what you want, but it won't throw a warning
jrockway
or other similarly broken software
bpalmer
aartist
what is .emacs.d stands for?
fledermaus
technomancy: doesn't do anything that libpurple doesn't do by default yet... but I could have it listen on dbus or something for interfaces going down/coming up and try to restore connections
ams
interesting

killown
i am following this tutorial http://hide1713.wordpress.com/2009/01/30/setup-perfect-python-environment-in-emacs/
fledermaus
technomancy: what did you have in mind?
bpalmer
aartist: emacs directory , roughly.
quotemstr
Grr
Who summons me now and incurs my wrath?
technomancy
fledermaus: listening on dbus was basically it
I wish I had time to help hack on it myself
ams
originally, atleast to someon professor, everyone had blue eyes...
and due to genetic mutation, and relocation, we got different eye colours..
technomancy
but I'm rather swamped with patches to my own projects presently

What I want to find out is -- do parrots know much about Astro-Turf?
aartist
I like to have my editable .emacs located at some other location rather than ~/.emacs . How I can make it possible?
ams
blue eyes are low in melalnie... and green high in melaline
aartist
Is it possible to have ~/.emacs just point to the other location?
technomancy
nonsense, everyone knows blue eyes are caused by the spice
bpalmer
aartist: sure.
jlf
aartist
Similarly for .emacs.d
jrockway
aartist
jlf: I am on windows XP.
aidalgol
aartist: Then there is no hope for you.
jlf
my condolences
jrockway
aartist
jrockway: Isn't it catch22?
jrockway
:)
jlf
yo dawg i herd you like configuration so we put a .emacs in your .emacs so you can configure while you configure
aidalgol
aartist: He means have (load-file "path/to/preferred/location")
quotemstr
Dosvedanya mio Istochnik
JordiGH
quotemstr!!
o/ I've just seen a face o/`
aidalgol
Oh, sorry, I forgot you're on Windows. It should be (load-file "X:\path\to\preferred\location")
quotemstr
(Action) has been listening to too much Pink Martini.
JordiGH
Do you really need to use backslashes in Windows?
aidalgol
JordiGH: Yes.
JordiGH
I mean, from within Emacs? :-(
aidalgol
In some places.
aartist
aidalgol: Thank you. that makes sense.
aidalgol
aartist: Good. :)
jrockway
no you don't
i have never seen any place that requires \ in windows
except IE
but definitely not in emacs
aidalgol
Uh, OK, then it's the drive letter that you must use (for absolute paths).
jrockway
type c:\fo\bar and hit tab, and emacs swaps them to /
aidalgol
I was getting confused.
jrockway
yeah
the drive lettter is required
aidalgol
I call running Emacs on Windows "penance".
JordiGH
Drive letters seem so foreign after not using them for nine years.
aartist
jrockway: yep: you don't need '\' here.
jrockway
but in cmd.exe, the drive letter is ignored
aidalgol
Drive letters are a PITA for removable media.
jrockway
so you have to "d:" before you can run stuff on d:
quotemstr
Yay.
jrockway
you can't just say d:\foo\bar.exe
it is retarded
quotemstr
At least it's not VMS.
jrockway
windows is retarded
quotemstr
Just tell yourself that.
jrockway
i'm surprised emacs works on it
JordiGH
Really?
aidalgol
What's wrong with VMS?
(Action) hasn't used it.
JordiGH
You need to change drive letters to execute stuff on that drive?
jrockway
i'm surprised someone was willing to take the time to port it
JordiGH
OMG
quotemstr
aidalgol: It's path syntax is horrid.
jrockway
but i am quite grateful :)
quotemstr
Its, even.
aartist
Is there .emacs setup guidelines?
quotemstr
DKA0:[MYDIR.SUBDIR1.SUBDIR2]MYFILE.TXT;1
JordiGH
aartist: Are there guidelines for creating art?
aartist
I have around 500+ lines in .emacs?
quotemstr
JordiGH: How's that mode?
aidalgol
JordiGH
quotemstr: One sec, putting together some stuff...
aidalgol

JordiGH: Let me rephrase. Can I see samples of Good .emacs files?
technomancy
aartist: if you can make it look like Camping, then you win: http://github.com/camping/camping/blob/master/lib/camping.rb
jrockway

my .emacs is in there
it works.

fsbot
try: emacsstarterkit starter-kit starterkit http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1608/is_5_24/ai_n25469444/
bpalmer
quotemstr: that's not quite true. Look at Common Lisp's file path syntax.
technomancy
fsbot: botsmack! I just said starter-kit

quotemstr
bpalmer: That doesn't count; it's an artificial wrapper that tries to accommodate every system. No system uses CL path syntax as its native naming scheme.

What do you guys think of Gobolinux?
Or Mac OS X?
Whitespace? In *my* FHS?
quotemstr
I haven't used GoboLinux.
OS X is fine.
(Action) shrugs.
Whitespace is part of life.
dim
OS X is good if you want to use your computer for other activities than computer related stuff, I think
aidalgol
Mac OS X is better than Windows, but...
quotemstr
At least OS X is Unix.
aidalgol
dim: Right on!
dim
GoboLinux I like the idea but I stick to debian
aidalgol
quotemstr: But rather pathetic Unix.
JordiGH
I really hate the idea of Gobolinux and MacOS X.
/usr is not user unfriendly.
aidalgol
Since it's a hybrid with NextStep
dim
well you have to see it with two heads (macosx)
technomancy
aidalgol: but they are a Real Unix! it says so right on their "I am a Real Unix" certification they bought.
dim
the hacker in me does not like it, but I mainly use Emacs, so I breathe again :)
quotemstr
I mean, they took FreeBSD. broke kselect, ported the kernel it to Mach, invented a bizarre filesystem standard, patched the compiler, NIHed a window system, and added two different kinds of symlink, but it's still Unix.
aidalgol
Yeah, Eshell ftw!
quotemstr
And it comes with Emacs.
:-0
JordiGH
technomancy: POSIX is such a joke, it's such a narrow spec to be mostly useless.
aartist
Thanks for the .emacs files. I have yet to see some organization., but I guess, it is 'art'.
aidalgol
quotemstr: NIHed?
quotemstr
JordiGH: /usr is pointless in the modern era. We should do away with it.

Now Mac OS, on the other hand is a very nice little system.
For those who want simple.
jeremyw
I like it. :)
JordiGH
quotemstr: It's not. It works fine in Debian. Apps should share libraries and data, not have every app have its own copy of everything in its own subtree.
quotemstr
aidalgol: It has no memory protection or preemptive multitasking. I'll pass.
JordiGH: Fine. But do it in /, not /usr.
jeremyw
quotemstr: Feel free to explain. I guess I didn't know those things.
quotemstr
JordiGH: Nobody actually mounts /usr separately these days.
dim
quotemstr: but if I plug my JamVOX and my guitar, I just have to play and I'm happy
jeremyw
quotemstr: /msg me if you think it's OT. :) I love to learn.
dim
don't try that with linux
quotemstr
Maintaining the distinction is pointless.
aidalgol
quotemstr: I meant for the user.
JordiGH
quotemstr: I guess...
aidalgol
It would need a better development environment to be useful now.
JordiGH
jeremyw: This channel is very tolerant of OT.
quotemstr
Or more specifically, ln -s / /usr
jeremyw: Explain what?
aidalgol
(Action) is looking forward to Haiku's forst stable release.
