quotemstr
Don't mind ams. He's the resident curmudgeon.
ams
fledermaus: ^^
meanerelk
it worked. thanks again.
dim
curmudgeon n : a crusty irascible cantankerous old person full of stubborn ideas
ams
remleduff: really, you should read the tutorial; and the manual.
remleduff: might do you good..
dim
quotemstr: that's for a compliment :)
remleduff
I have read the tutorial, it says not a single word about either loading libraries or browsing info
ams
remleduff: now you are just lying.
C-h iRead included Manuals (a.k.a. Info). This command puts you into a special buffer called `*info*' where you can read manuals for the packages installed on your system. Type m emacs <Return> to read the Emacs manual. If you have never before used Info, type ? and Emacs will take you on a guided tour of Info mode facilities. Once you are through with this tutorial, you should consult the Emacs Info manual as y
our primary documentation.
you even have:
A similar command C-h v displays the documentation of variables, including those whose values you can set to customize Emacs behavior. You need to type in the name of the variable when Emacs prompts for it.
as for loading other lisp libraries, that is a matter of programming, and not about how to use emacs.
and not suitable for the tutorial
but hey!
that stuff is in the manual..
for example
(emacs) Init Examples
jordanb_
rudybot: quote

rudybot
Let's use Windows/386.
ams
(emacs) Lisp Libraries
remleduff
Yes, I guess I was wrong.
ams
remleduff: how about buying a copy of the emacs manual from the fsf? not only will you learn something, you will help the fsf.
remleduff
No thank you
jordanb_
The fsf emacs manual is highly obsolete.
kodein
ams: I would like a new edition to come out that covers emacs23, though
ams
jordanb_: not really.
kodein: you could help.
someone has to do the work, it won't happen by itself.
remleduff
The problem with an attitude of "RTFM" is that, these manuals are huge walls of text that just about anyone is going to miss a paragraph or two when reading. Particularly if it's stuff that you don't need until the first time you do need it. I know it sucks to tell people stuff that they should already have read, but at the same time, expecting someone to memorize both the tutorial and the entire manual before they can get anythi
ams
remleduff: feel free to suggest how they can be improved then. you can do that by reading it, and sendin suggestions to emacs-devel@gnu.org.
remleduff: there is also this thing called an index...
jordanb_
ams: It's for like emacs 20.
remleduff
And assuming that someone hasn't read it in the first place, is a quick route to just pissing someone off.
jordanb_
http://www.fsf.org/ <-- haha
ams
remleduff: i find that people like you who refuse to read the manual, a manual that we have spent immense amounts of time writting to me far mor of the `piss you of' nature, than your own lazyness.
remleduff
Except that I have read the tutorial, I apologize that I missed something the first time round, but you're simply wrong when you state that I refused to read it.
ams
remleduff: expect, that you DIDN'T read it, you might stop lying.
23:18 /ignore remleduff
jordanb_: the manual is for emacs 22.
jordanb_
You computer's clock is wrong.
ams
jordanb_: you;re off by two versions of emacs.
kodein
ams: yes, and I have considered it. unfortunately I am pretty hard pressed for time at the moment.
jordanb_
ams: Last I looked, the printed one was for emacs 20, but since the FSF's website is broken, I can't verify that.

ams
jordanb_: i'm looking at the fsf website, it is for 22.
kodein: yo ucould pay someone.
http://shop.fsf.org/product/gnu-emacs-manual-16th-edition/
jordanb_
Hahaha, the fsf is selling plush dolls.
kodein
ams: yes, in imaginary money then. when I have money to pay rent _and_ food, I will resume my donating to the cause.
ams
kodein: sounds like one of those rich world problems...
kodein: `i don't have money for food or rent, but i can waste time on irc with a computer'...
kodein
when internet is included in the rent, there's not much I can do about that
ams
you could move to a cheaper place, hence having money for food.
jordanb_
Haha, they're selling a book on Knuth MIX assembly.
ams
who are?
jordanb_
FSF
kodein
but I'm very sorry about not being such a good humanitarian as you. but please, do find me a place cheaper than ¬250 a month.
actually, find me somewhere they pay me for living, seeing as I have no income
ams
kodein: and if i do? will you update the emacs manual
?
kodein
of course.
jordanb_
kodein: I thought they did that everywhere in Europe.
ams
kodein: one, move to sweden.
kodein
done.
ams
kodein: two, go on unemployment.
kodein: three, get money from the gov.
WIN!
or...
bojohan
every emacs release has an updated manual. you just have to print it on paper.
kodein
I can't even get alfakassa, you know.
jordanb_
This is ams' economic development plan.
ams
bojohan: there is far more work to be done than `print it'..
kodein: well, neither can i :)
then again, i'm employed.
remleduff
Aha, the instructions at the top paredit of paredit-21.el say to (autoload 'paredit-mode "paredit" ...yadda yadda...), the problem is that the "paredit" is a filename, I assumed it was related to the (provides 'paredit) at the end of paredit-21.el. Found that out through C-h v autoload
ams
you could also just find a job
jordanb_
I can't believe people pay ams money to be around them.
ams
not really that hard
kodein
oh, so that's what I've been doing wrong these last 13 months.
I actually have to look for the jobs?
ams
kodein: it isnt that hard to find jobs
bojohan
LauJensen: i would hook into erc-track, using erc-track-list-changed-hook
ams
kodein: where you at?
kodein
linköping
jordanb_
kodein: If ams can get a job, **anyone** can get a job.
ams
poor sod.
LauJensen
bojohan: I'll give it a shot, thanks
ams
kodein: seriously though, not hard to get a job in sweden... i don't get why people complain about it
kodein
jordanb_: yes, and I'm actually starting on one in april, but until then I won't get paid
ams
kodein: i quit my previous job just cause i got a bit fed up for half a year, and got a job in gothenburg now..
kodein
right.
ams
you could do consulting
kodein
you should give blambi a visit some time ;)
rryouumaa
somebody was dissing phpbb a while back, but i didn't get the reasons (besides the fact that it is a web forum package in the first place). why specifically is it worse than specifically vbulletin? can anybody answer?
ams
kodein: we have a unscheduled date...
kodein
ams: does his wife know?
;)
ams
kodein: how should i know?
kodein
meh
ams
i think i met his wife..
oh well
i need a smoke
rryouumaa
do most people's clients format /italics like this/?
ams
rryouumaa: no.
rryouumaa
(Action) will consider recommending phpbb to replace vbulletin
cluck
that used to be used on BBSs and on IRC way back when
ams
not on any BBS's i frequented
or any irc channels i've wasted immense amounts of time on during the last 15 years or whatever
cluck
_foo_ is still commonly used and recognized in/by email clients as underline
ams: irc started to die 15 years ago
ams
if you say so
cluck
we can partially thank ms comic chat and mirc viroses for that
ams
ok, if you say so.
hylje
instant messaging with their fancy multimedia and proprietary stuff is what we can thank for keeping the unwashed masses mostly off IRC
mns
anyone used jira-mode with Jira 4 ? Is it any good ?
quotemstr
I'm pretty sure this tethering program is buggy: it claims I've used 279,813,018 megabytes in the past hour.
cluck
thankfully irc seems to be like the BSDs and zombies, the deader the better
quotemstr
cluck: Theo de Raadt *is* remarkably like a zombie mob.
ams
i'm trying to comprehend why people have so strange values for PS1 in sh..
multi-line prompts...
showing uptime, date, colours, and what not..
kodein
blinking in all colors of the rainbow
ams
yeah
$ echo $PS1

jordanb_
Theo De Raadt is proof that computer people are so charmed that it's impossible for us to destroy our lives through obnoxious personalities.
remleduff
Is there a faster way of closing a bunch of buffers other than "C-x k<RET>" over and over?
offby1
remleduff: M-x ibuffer RET, then select 'em en masse with something like % f, % m, etc
kodein
kill-some-buffers
jordanb_
Let's make like the Japanese and kill whales.
kodein
M-x kill-some-whales
offby1
(Action) makes like a tree, and leaves
remleduff
Thanks, the %f %m stuff is something else new to blow my mind :)
offby1
you need to lash that mind down, boy
don't want it blowing away
remleduff
I thought %f was a more general way of marking things than it actually is, didn't realize it was related to ibuffer mode
How many buffers do you have open after a while editing, is trying to keep the numbers relatively low just a futile endeavor/counterproductive?
jordanb_
offby1: :)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/12/Strv_103c_a.jpg <-- Swedish people try to build a tank.
kodein
stridsvagn s <333
more of a tank killer, tho
jordanb_
Seems like it's missing some important bits.
cluck
quotemstr: jordanb_: don't insult zombies, not even them are so persistent and illogical
kodein
jordanb_: like?
quotemstr
cluck: Isn't that the precise definition of a zombie?
jordanb_
Some means of adjusting the cannon?
kodein
that fence on the front was classified up until it was taken out of service
jordanb_
Usually tanks are designed so they can point their gun in the directon of the enemy, rather than obliging the enemy to manuveur in front of it.
shabble
kodein: to screw up shaped charges, at a guess?
kodein
shabble: anti-HEAT "shield"
shabble
yeah
cheaper than reactive armour :)
kodein
jordanb_: yes, but this was really designed to ambush tanks and then retreat quickly (hence two engines)
ams`
bah
ams
T-34 for life.
bremner_
Is Sweden at war with denmark again?
cluck
quotemstr: well if you want to go all intellectual on zombies, according to their creator they are a metaphor for our consumerist society, a mob of mindless (but not illogical) drones
quotemstr
(Action) rages some more at New Urbanism.
jordanb_
It would be even more useless than the N1A1 in Iraq.
M1A1
kodein
a tank designed for defending sweden would have a hard time being useful in a desert-ish country?
cluck
kodein: the arctic _is_ a desert
kodein
yes, the arctic is
hylje
most of sweden is more like subarctic and temperate
more forest than empty space really
even factoring in farmland
jordanb_
I mean, you're completly safe if you're physically outside the field in which the tank can swing its entire body to address.
kodein
3/4 of sweden is forest
ams
hylje: eh? wtf you smoking? nothing subarti about sweden
arcti
c
cccc
hylje
feels good man
kodein
above the treeline would probably be considered subarctic
quotemstr
Err, you can talk about this empirically.
,g "winter war"
fsbot
jordanb_
kodein: Wouldn't trees cause huge problems with that thing trying to aim at the enemy?
quotemstr
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_War
Granted, that was Finland, but is Sweden all that different?
kodein
jordanb_: the biggest problem for the S-tank was heat dissipation, or rather the huge amounts of heat a turbine engine produces
hylje
quotemstr: the heartland of sweden is more south
kodein
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4eL1G8yyoo
jordanb_
kodein: I think, had it gone into combad, other problems would have surfaced.
ams
quotemstr: helsinki is about the same level as stockholm...
dpro
well there's /some/ subarctic climate -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden#Climate
ams
quotemstr: which is where finland ends, while sweden still drags around 1000km down south
plutonas
i am configuring gnus with gmail, i think i got it configured, i wrote a test message, but don't know the function/shortcut to send it, what is it?
kodein
jordanb_: not really, surveillance flight would've spotted them like that, and that'd've been the end of it, really.
ams
also, finland has lots of lakes... which weden doen't
bojohan
plutonas: C-c C-c
kodein
actually, sweden has a lot of lakes too
ams
kodein: compared to finland, no it doesn't.
faux
jordanb_: if i remember correctly the german tank commander with the most kills during ww2 preferred to rotate the entire tank instead of using the turret to aim.
kodein
about a hundred thousand lakes in sweden.
plutonas
thanks
offby1
remleduff: I regularly go to some effort to clear out the old buffers.
