could anyone enlighten me as to which tags tool has the best support in emacs ?
considering there is (c|e|g)tags...
I do mainly ruby and javascript though.
jlf
maybe look at ,,tags
fsbot
tags -- [0] Basically, a list of bookmarks in a file like ~/TAGS. Each bookmark corresponds to one function/variable definition. One TAGS file can cover many projects. You can also have multiple TAGS files. ..[Type ,more]
jlf
,m
fsbot
[1] to remove SGML, HTML, or XML tags without parsing a document, run M-x sgml-tags-invisible. You may need to load the sgml-mode library, first.,
[2] (info "(emacs)Tags")
jlf
not very useful, that
disturb
jlf: indeed ;)
legumbre
jlf: haha, radical indeed
(Action) ponders free radicals

Hey guys, I'm going a bit crazy
Because I'm being force to use a web irc client...
Whenever I run erc, I get: erc-update-modules: `list' is not a known ERC module
Google isn't too helpful on this one... I'm running emacs 23 from macports, just cleanly installed.
I'm not sure where to find the source for erc-update-modules either

cvandusen
seangrove: sounds like you've got a malformed list for the erc modules, or the word list in the list of modules.
seangrove
cvandusen: I think you're right...
cvandusen
what does C-h v erc-modules RET show?
seangrov`
Oh that's much, much nicer
Thanks cvandusen
I actually had to remove a few modules from my list...not sure why, but at least it works now
cvandusen
glad my shooting in the dark didn't maim anyone

"Currently, cats rarely eat humans, so there should be little selective advantage for T. gondii to specifically manipulate human behaviour."
Gotta love subtle humor in serious research articles.
bjonnh
what's the purpose of this article ?
quotemstr
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1635495/
It's a fascinating article, actually.
A protist infects rats to predispose them to be more likely to be eaten by cats. The protist can only reproduce in cats.
Nevertheless, it can infect most mammals, including humans, and cause behavioral changes.
It's been linked to schizophrenia , for example.
enthymene
mmm, I remember this.
quotemstr
This article speculates on the large-scale impact subtle alterations of personality can have on society as a whole.
enthymene
slashdot loves these stories.
bjonnh
aggregate personality : sorry I'm not an english native speaker, what does it means ?
quotemstr
bjonnh: The personality of a society as a whole; the average, if you will.
jordanb
Let's make a Warsaw pact.
quotemstr
Let's not.

niszpoligraf?
jordanb
I like it how they have *both* a macdonalds billboard and one of those obnoxious truck billboards in that picture.
damd
lol @ the big tasty commercial
jordanb
WELCOME TO THE FUTURE COMRADE

damd
183 B59AB8
that's hilarious
jordanb
What does it say?
rudybot: t8 ru en 183 B59AB8
damd
big tasty
rudybot
jordanb: Big Tasty
jordanb
Heh
damd
it's transliterated literally
"big teysti"
jordanb
I hear people in Russia think that mcdonalds is a nice resturant.
damd
i know of people in poland that have never even been to mcdonalds as it's too expensive
quotemstr
jordanb: Most people around the world do.
In some parts of the world, McDonalds even delivers.
I wonder whether the food is just better.
Do we have unusually industrial McDonalds here?
damd
i eat mcdonalds probably six times a week
jordanb
It's cachet.
The worst and most expensive place I went in Prague was TGI Friday's.
quotemstr
damd: Really?
legumbre
@5254!
damd
quotemstr: yeah, not even exaggerating
quotemstr
jordanb: I'd rather go to some out of the way corner bisto and try real Czech cuisine.
damd
quarter pounder menu, every time
quotemstr
damd: ... why?
damd
they gave me a VIP card there recently
bjonnh
5 years that I've not ate there
damd
and the other day they gave me the food for free "because i'm there so often"
jordanb
quotemstr: That's what I did most of the time I was there. But I got outvoted by a group I was with on the TGI Friday's decision.
damd
quotemstr: it's easy, fast, not a lot to think about
quotemstr
damd: You don't seem to have a big appetite for novelty.
jordanb
quotemstr: The food was crappy and manufactured and 3x more expensive than at the czech places.
quotemstr
Interesting.
jordanb
damd: I'm suprised the teenagers the have working there 1) noticed that you were there a lot and 2) had the authority to give you free food.
quotemstr
damd: Also, where do you live?
damd
jordanb: it was the manager that gave me the freebie, and that was only once
quotemstr
Philip Glass is a good composer, but horribly pretentious.
damd
quotemstr: gothenburg, sweden
why?
fsbot
Why not?
jordanb
Why on earth do you go to mcdonalds?
Surely they have real food in gothenburg?
damd
i already told you
we have lots of different cuisine here
jordanb
I like it how 7/11 is on every street corner in Copenhagen.
damd: Have you ever seen supersize me? :P
damd
jordanb: same in gothenburg
i have seen supersize me, but i lost about 20 pounds before christmas and since that i've been eating mcdonalds at this rate without gaining any weight
jordanb
http://www.theonion.com/content/node/27602
quotemstr
damd: Do you eat the fries?
Most of the fat is in the fries.
Also, weight loss is all about portion control.
damd
quotemstr: yeah, but the quarter pounder burger actually has more calories than the fries, at least in sweden
quotemstr
The best diet in the world is to eat only when you're hungry, and then, eat only until you are full.
Everything else is a second-order effect.
damd
no need to tell me about it
i cheated, went on a VLCD, worked great
i'm actually on VLCD since yesterday again, trying to lose about 12 more pounds
quotemstr
(Action) thinks most fad diets work by forcing dieters to pay more attention to food.
jordanb
So is mcdonalds really the only 'fast' resturant there? Can't you go to a kebob stand?
damd
i like VLCD because it's simple and no-nonsense, calories out < calories in = less fat
we have kebab, pizza hut, "normal" pizza (swedish pizza), greek, turkish, italian, sushi, etc.
jordanb
Heh pizza hut.
quotemstr
jordanb: Near Des Moines, that's the only pizza joint around.
Strange place, that.
Lots of steak.
But when it comes to everything else, most needs are met by chain establishments.
legumbre
mmm steak.
jordanb
I mean, at least the kebob stand will use ingredients that didn't spend five months in a warehouse..
quotemstr
You can't beat Iowa steak. :-P
damd
jordanb: don't be so sure about that when you come to sweden
jordanb
I know a guy who only eats at burger king.
He moved her from st. louis.
A little bit ago he complained about the poor concentration of chain resturants here.
damd
i would go to burger king instead of mcdonalds if it weren't so far away
jordanb
You sound a lot like him. ;)
quotemstr
jordanb: Err... did you tell him to try the local flavor? :-)
jordanb
quotemstr: He came out to lunch with us a few times, only when we were going to burger places, but even that he wasn't so keen on.
quotemstr
damd: I maintain what you're doing is less eating than simply absorbing nutrients. :-P
jordanb
The places we were going didn't have that soft mushy bread, dontyaknow.
quotemstr
jordanb: When I moved here, I made it a point to try as many of the little local restaurants as possible. I still have a folder full of menus I flip through when I want to try something different.
jlf
(Action) can't believe nobody has mentioned in-n-out
jordanb
That's only on the west coast.
jlf
that's what a hamburger's all about!
jordanb
It was good when I went there though.
quotemstr
jlf: I'm on the east coast, you insensitive clod. :-)
jordanb
Although not as good as non-chain places I go to.
quotemstr
(Can you count Buffalo as "east coast"?)
technomancy
not all of the west coast. =(
(says the guy from Seattle)
jordanb
All in-and-out does that's "special" is use real food.
jlf
technomancy: heh, they even have them in _utah_ now
jordanb
I went to one in las vegas.
jlf
jordanb: yeah but that makes a big difference
jordanb
Seems to be located in california and where california refugees tend to congregate.
quotemstr
We have *amazing* local food here. Not just wings either (though those are sublime): we have beef on kimmelweck rolls, all kinds of Polish food, an idiosyncratic style of pizza, locally-brewed beer, and even a couple tasty barbecue places.
I wouldn't trade the set of restaurants here for that of any other place in the world.
jlf
how's the pizza idiosyncratic?
quotemstr
jlf: It's sort of an intermediate between the Chicago and New York styles.
jordanb
It's not a soggy limp roll like NYC style? :P
hober
(Action) had In 'n' Out for lunch today, actually.
quotemstr
Nor is it a bread cylinder filled with cheese and sauce, like a Chicago pizza. :-)
It's less greasy too.
jordanb
Chicago pizza isn't acylinder.
quotemstr
jordanb: I was being facetious. :-P
jordanb
quotemstr
Also, people here don't fold their pizza like they do in New york.
rpg
Can anyone help me grok the behavior of texinfo mode? When I ask it to update the nodes, it skips over some, and I have no idea what could cause it to do that.
quotemstr
jordanb: It is a cylinder. Just a squat one. :-)
http://www.buffalochow.com/mt/images/buffalostyle_pizza_staggering_p2.jpg
jordanb
Lottsa topings.
quotemstr
There's a whole article about it: http://buffalochow.com/2008/01/buffalostyle_pizza_staggering.html
We also have these: http://www.buffalochow.com/mt/images/mypod_pizza_plants_inspired_po_p1.jpg
It's... almost like a calzone.
It's a pizza in the sense that a whale is a platypus is a mammal.
But it's delicious.
Damn. I meant only 'platypus'. 'Whale' had the wrong connotation. :-)
technomancy
dang... I miss working down town
quotemstr
Why?
fsbot
Why not?
technomancy
much better food options than working at home
quotemstr
Eh, I enjoy cooking.
jordanb
Where do you live?
quotemstr
(Action) is also working from home these days.
technomancy
jordanb: seattle
jordanb
Oh
There are lots of places in my 'hood. ;)
Although the density is hire in the loop.
But the waits are longer and the food more espensive.
technomancy
the only coffee shop within walking distance from my place is pretty wretched
quotemstr
(Action) just drives.
technomancy
yeah, but I work from home in order to avoid the commute. =P
quotemstr
If we *had* office space, I'd work there.
I prefer to create a physical separation between work and play.
technomancy
quotemstr: I have a converted shed in the back yard; works great
quotemstr
technomancy: How do you heat it?
technomancy
put a heater in the wall
quotemstr
Wired for networking? Or do you just rely on wifi?
technomancy
quotemstr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/technomancy/tags/laboratory/
quotemstr
Hah, "laboratory"?
technomancy
dropped cat5 and power out there
quotemstr
I remember wanting to do that with my parents' shed a long, long time ago.
Groovy.
e1f
the walls have to be painted black
zenspider
can I store off a permanent register? or should I pick up one of those templatey/snippety things instead?
I think I'd rather just do C-x r i for the few things I need often
technomancy
zenspider: here's what I do: http://github.com/technomancy/emacs-starter-kit/blob/master/starter-kit-registers.el
I don't know if there's a "save all current registers" though
zenspider
technomancy: no, that's fine. I don't need to make my current registers persistent... I just need to set some registers straight up.
looks like set-register will work fine
khaije|selen
Is there a way to view and select between/among the major and minor modes? I'm quite new here :)
zenspider
technomancy: I'm curious... why is that a macro?
technomancy
zenspider: you mean why's it use backtick?
zenspider
technomancy: yeah
khaije|selen: generally you set up auto-mode-alist to set the major mode based on the file being opened.
