I found linum.el to display line numbers in emacs. How to load script in emacs?
kodein
linum should come with emacs 23. just do M-x linum-mode

chetnick
kodein: i have emacs22.
dont see emacs23 available in my repos.
kodein
well, in that case, ,,install

do they even make 3.5" drives that small anymore?
moocow
hi
i just hit ctrl shift x and all the text went black. how do i invert that?
e1f
it's a 2.5" drive
jlf
moocow: that doesn't sound like a complete keybinding, but you can try M-x set-foreground-color RET white RET
moocow
that did it!
thanks!@
jlf
you bet.. don't forget to contribute to the #emacs benevolent association
moocow
actually that reminds me, i also have to signup to support the free software foundation too
indeed

In fluid/experienced emacsing is navigating to locations via the use of "search" the way a pr odes it?
pro does it?
bob2
ctrl-s/r are very very handy
Modius
Okay - in the minibuffer (say, Ctrl-X Ctrl-F - find file) when some default dir comes up, what's the quickest way to blitz that so I can start typing a new dir?
bob2
/
but you proabbly want ido anyway
Modius
bob2: Doesn't work (at least on windows)
bob2
ok
maybe it's //
who knows
jlf
Modius: ido with flex-matching enabled is very fast
Modius
jlf: What do you mean?

jlf
Modius: ,,ido

where does emacs actually make use of seconday selection?
I could see it used to sort rectangles by columns which is currently impossible (is it?)
e1f
ok, is there anyone else in portugal

jlf: Thanks. Man, I could go ape adding toys to emacs

i meant here in this chan, of course
where is cluck
JordiGH
Modius: Please do.
e1f
maybe i should mention the ipad or the iphone or os x
i think he triggers his notice off those keywords
jlf
e1f: that's nothing.. someone mentioned linux earlier and ams failed to chime in
JordiGH
Or ams.
e1f
wow. that is a shock
JordiGH
You guys make me feel inadquate
jgh
that's better
e1f
we haven't been able to modulate snogglethorpe
jlf
jgh: that nick makes you seem older..more sophisticated.
(Action) adjourns to the club for brandy and cigars
jgh
jlf: I bet the ladies will love it too.
jlf
quite so
e1f
on the other hand, with the old nick, people thought you were a girl
jgh
Who the hell thinks that "Jordi" is a girl's name?
jlf
(Action) always pictured him wearing a visor on the set of st:tng
e1f
latin names ending in vowels are typically female
jgh
I'm not sure Catalan counts as Latin... quite a bit of Celtic in it.
foul_owl
How do I set emacs to autoindent my c++ code, but only use tabs
jgh
Tabs?
fsbot
tabs -- check indent-tabs-mode .. + other entries
jgh
I hope we have another tabs vs spaces flamewar. Put some variety into the usual Linux vs everything else.
greboides
hi, how can i escape " on a string, "\"" doesnt seem to work it prints \"?

foul_owl
i don't need to know the tab size in advance
lol
jgh
lol
jwz contributes too: http://www.jwz.org/doc/tabs-vs-spaces.html
greboides
hmm \\" gives unbalanced parens
foul_owl
seriously though, can someone give me an answer
jgh
foul_owl: fsbot already did.
Ober2
heh
jgh
foul_owl: indent-tabs-mode
You know, at work there's a guy who uses a tab width of 3.
foul_owl
i want the tab key to insert x tabs, where x = how nested my { are
jgh
I had lots of fun moving the tab widths around until I had the epiphany to try an odd tab width.
foul_owl
how do i do that?
jgh
But of course, I insert spaces.
Matching the tab width of 3.
foul_owl: indent-tabs-mode
foul_owl: And what do you want Emacs to do to align code?
foul_owl
i want the autoalign to be on, but i want tabs, not spaces
jgh
You can't align with tabs.
You'll need at least some spaces.
Unless you make your code always as wide as a multiple of your tab width, hehe.
foul_owl: You realise aligning is different from indenting?
foul_owl: this is overall a very complex problem.
mns__
foul_owl, you can indent with tabs, but alignment works best with spaces only. you should read the tabsareevil document
foul_owl
sorry, not aligning then, but indenting
i want to indent with tabs, but have each { be indented by x spaces, where x is the { depth
sorry, x tabs, lol
jgh
I can't believe that jwz thinks the function of the tab key is a mere "issue of interoperability".
foul_owl: lol
foul_owl
i have been searching on google for about six months without an answer
paseante1
is there any way to make pc-selection-mode work in console?
foul_owl
but it's pretty hard to state my question in words
the default behavior of emacs is to autoindent c++ code, right? i just want it to do that with tabs only
jgh
jwz favours the "burn all the tabs" idea.
mns__
maybe you could write up sample code with the indentation you have in mind and what it currently does and put it up on lisppaste or something to give a visual clue ?
jgh
foul_owl: For the fourth time, indent-tabs-mode
foul_owl
indent-tabs-mode does not preserve the auto indent
ok, i will pastebin something
jgh
You realise that what you pastebin will not necessarily match what you see?

*Indentation can insert tabs if this is non-nil.
You can customize this variable.
foul_owl
how do i print the contents of a variable?
jlf
C-h v varname
jgh
foul_owl: C-h v <variable-name>
greboides
foul_owl: C-h v name-of-var
jlf
it's unanimous
greboides
hehehhe
jgh
On my end it looks like I won.
jlf
same here
greboides
indeed, you have faster fingers
foul_owl
how do i do it without C-h
jgh
foul_owl: Oh, you want a more difficult method?
foul_owl
On this system I am using, C-h seems to emulate a backspace
jgh
foul_owl: go to *scratch* buffer, type the variable you want, put that variable and only that variable in a region, M-x eval-region.
jlf
(Action) grumbles about kids today
ams
jlf: eh, you're the kid, C-h was backpace.
and anyway...
foul_owl
Thanks!
jlf
ams: that was my point
HisDudeness
ams: C-h is good for freedom.
greboides
foul_owl: F1 v
jgh
Guys.
It's official.
I can keep this nick.
\o/
foul_owl
thanks!
jgh
foul_owl: you can also put the variable in *scratch* buffer on its own line and hit C-j.
jlf
tln ftw
foul_owl
Ok, my apologies. indent-tabs-mode is exactly what i wanted. The source file i was testing it on, it just kept inserting tabs, there didn't seem to be any sort of auto-indent working, but every other source file I tried it on has worked. Thanks a lot!!
paseante1
foul_owl: you can do M-: and then (message variable) too
ams
ehhh
redundant
M-: variable
i enough
jeez
jlf
the horror!
jgh
(message (set 'variable))
greboides
serious now how can i escape " on a string?
foul_owl
perhaps the autoindent wasn't working because this one source file i chose is peppered with ^Ms
jgh
(message (set 'variable variable))
foul_owl
got a macro to remove ^M s?
jgh
foul_owl: Someone mixed DOS and Unix line endings in that file.
ams
greboides: \"
greboides
ams it prints "\""
ams
greboides: yes
greboides
ams i want """
sepult
(loop for i in "\r\n" () do blah) ??
fsbot
Highly likely.
ams
greboides: but that would be a invalid string.
jlf
foul_owl: M-x replace-string RET C-q C-m RET RET
foul_owl
how do you folks deal with mixing dos and unix newlines in collaborative projects
ams
greboides: what are you trying to do?
greboides
ams really? i need it to send to a shell script
ams
foul_owl: by not doing it.
jgh
foul_owl: You don't mix them.
ams
greboides: example_
_
?
greboides
wait
foul_owl
how do you avoid mixing them? if my friend edits the file in windows, then i edit it in emacs, isn't mixing going to be inevitable
ams
foul_owl: emacsdetects theline endings.
