I'd have to read the list chapter again, why couldn't it be a list?
rgr
I dont know. It just wont eval as one ;)
dim
ah, you want to eval it
tlyu
(A 2 "A") will _read_ as a list, but won't evaluate properly unless there's a symbol named "A" with a function binding
dim
read-eval-loop, I was stuck at the read
if you want to eval the first element of the list must be a function, or a macro, or a special thing (not sure about special things in Elisp)
technomancy
tlyu wins.
listen to him
tlyu
"quote" is itself a special form. -- see C-h f quote
dim
ah yes the 7 axioms of McCarthy's lisp?
rgr
thanks, need to re-read the read section ... btw better to ask silly elisp Qs here or another channel?

aidalgol
rgr: ELisp is directly related to Emacs, so it's on topic here, but #lisp may be of more help for some ELisp questions than others (although #lisp is for Common Lisp).
tlyu
i've seen reasonably detailed conversation about elisp here in the past
technomancy
rgr: it's fine; don't worry about it

true :-)

that looks suspiciously like The Karate Kid
damd
i wonder what his real name was
condor?
rgr
is there any tool to draw out lists as in the cons cell diagrams in the elisp manual?
damd: or Condon.
shabble: lol ... you're right.
Karate Kid .. *chuckle*
shabble
rgr: I'd imagine either (or both) artist-mode or graphviz.
not sure if you could do it automagically though
rgr
shabble: I mean like a pretty debugger output.

what is the latest and greatest mode for posting to blogspot? istr it took me four hours to set it up the last time years ago, and I would not like to repeat that experience

I heard g-client is http://emacspeak.blogspot.com/2007/03/emacs-client-for-google-services.html

rgr
writing html to blog something is pretty ridiculous. YOu might as well just use an html editor and pubish your own web site.
shabble
there's some mozilla plugin that lets you shell out to a local editor for text fields iirc
proq
rgr: um... like <html><head></head><body>Yawn</body></html> ?
you could pretty easily make a text wrapper with a keybinding if that's the case

you could always export some org to html

I do that already. But thats not a blog in the true dynamc sense.

do you folks ever version control your share/emacs/site-lisp?
so you can set up a new machine's emacs modes instantly?
shabble
bits of mine are, although I've never really tested on a fresh machine
it's more for backups
fualo
ah, yea. Getting everything working can be tricky
that's also the idea behind this
Aquamacs came with everything in the .app file, which is both good and bad

it isn't the default
fualo
proq: neither is caplock = ctrl though..
but that's an improvement
proq
the rest of the emacs versions on all OSes are set up that way

how much work would a multitouch emacs be?
shabble
what would it do?
if you're on osx you can already use something like multiclutch to bind gestures to keys

How can I have a new register with an initial value?
(For example 35)
maxalwings
where can I locate init.el file on mac OS X Leopard
fualo
maxalwings: locate?
proq
hylje: not much work at all. the real work would be what the multitouch accomplishes
maxalwings
Yes I need to customize emacs
fualo
maxalwings no, I am saying open terminal and use the command locate
it could be all over the place
maxalwings
thanks
rgr
if it even exists.
fualo
if you have macports, aquamacs, and emacs 23 (cocoa) it could be in many places
rgr
the Q should be where should it be located.
shabble
'mdfind init.el' should work
and uses Spotlight, so should be fairly quick
fualo
I don't have it on on my os x machine, strangely
maxalwings
I have found this file in /usr/share/emacs/22.1/ediff-init.el.gz
I dont have it too?
shabble
maxalwings: if you don't have it, you could just create ~/.emacs
and put your configuration in there
kodein
well... go to your home dir, make the directory .emacs.d, touch ~/.emacs.d/init.el and presto
maxalwings
Ok
fualo
maxalwings: which emacs are you using?
e1f
init.el doesn't typically exist. it is user created, iirc
and site-init.el also
maxalwings
I used macports to install it
proq
I don't have an init.el file either - what is it supposed to do?
kodein
proq: the same thing as your .emacs.
proq
spotlight doesn't search parts of the system it deems as the system itself. locate is better
maxalwings
Even locate in command line dont find it (init.el)
proq
are you sure it exists then?
did you update your locate db as root?
maxalwings
I dont know how
proq
read the locate manpage
shabble
there's a good chance you don't have one, as e1f said.
maxalwings
thanks
I have find the locate.database any tip on how to upadate it to root
proq

rgr
"sudo updatedb" on linux.
proq
on os x update-command is: /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb

I'm playing around with emacs, without any customizations, and I'm editing a python file, but when I hit tab on a continuing line, emacs won't let me tab more than a certain offset on the next line. I have to resolve this by hitting C-q tab which is a hard-tab. What option/mode is doing this?
tomoj
looking through the emacs lisp reference and can't seem to find what I need
I've got the name of a directory that's an ancestor of the current buffer's filename
alpheus
w00tz: M-x describe-key RETURN TAB
tomoj
need to trim the filename to just the part that comes after that directory
w00tz__
alpheus: is that newline-with-indent?
alpheus
could be; I don't have python-mode handy
tomoj
so e.g. given "~/foo/" and "~/foo/bar/baz.bing" I need "bar/baz.bing"
seems like search-forward is for searching in the buffer?
oh, damn
I must be stupid, eh?
yeah, ignore me
w00tz__
alpheus: it says that it's boutn to newline-with-indent which i sfine
alpheus: but it does give some options I can look at, I guess
alpheus
indent-according-to-mode is probably the next function to read
ovnicraft
hi folks, anyone here with experience in ipython conf with emacs?
JordiGH
Oh, god. Google now shows twitter results.
alpheus
also, tab-always-indent can be customized, but some "modes have their own variable to control this"
JordiGH
Anyways, is there an Emacs thingie for generating random words of a specified length from a dictionary?
"Markov chains", as the computery people call them.
I'm pretty sure I've seen something like this.

alright, I'm researching tab-always-indent and indent-according-to-mode
JordiGH
Man, this is hard...
Finally, found a word that isn't in the googles: kwantxi.
The "tx" are as in Basque, so it's pronounced "kwan-chee".
Win?
fsbot
I heard win is See meta
JordiGH
...
You don't get to tell me if this is win or not, fsbot.

,meta
fsbot
I think meta is [0] M-x means press and hold [META] (on PC keyboards, this is often ALT or the Windows key), press [x], release both; If you don't have META, M-x can be gotten by ESC x --> press ESC, release it, press x.

ok, now what?

But that would be a clear violation of the GNU coding standards.

JordiGH
C'mon, "kwantxi". Is that good?

It doesn't mean anything.
It's supposed to sound like "quantchee", though.

is there any way to apply a major or minor mode to a specific region of text?
JordiGH
,nickel mumamo
fsbot
JordiGH, Is it because of the people you hang around with that you say ,nickel mumamo?
JordiGH
,mumamo
fsbot
I heard mumamo is [0] a tool for editing a buffer with Multiple Major Modes (e.g. html and php) <http://emacswiki.org/wiki/MuMaMo>
[1] better than mmm-mode,
[2] distributed with <NxhtmlMode>
