,,lisppaste means paste it at http://paste.lisp.org?
fsbot
I heard lisppaste is [0] an auto-announcing listing host (pastebin) <http://paste.lisp.org/new/emacs>, <http://emacswiki.org/wiki/lisppaste>
[1] see ,lisppaste.el for an Emacs interface, ..[Type ,more]
laurus
Ah I see ;)
lisppaste
laurus pasted "untitled" at http://paste.lisp.org/display/95671
laurus
There we go, cool!
bpalmer
laurus: so it's actually complaining about the variable pub-d
laurus
Really, how could you tell that?
bpalmer
laurus: it's in the backtrace :) it goes from error on down back in time.
file-exists-p is raising the error; it ws called the previous line with pub-d
laurus
Hmm okay

bpalmer
what's the value of blorgv-publish-d ?
laurus
Wonder why pub-d is screwed up...
bpalmer
(you can check with C-h v blorgv-publish-d )
qizwiz
is there a builtin inferior lisp for elisp? or am i misremembering?
laurus
bpalmer, Value is nil
bpalmer
laurus: so set it to the directory you want to publish to.
laurus
bpalmer, I think it was supposed to get it from #+PUBLISH_DIR: in the .org file I'm running this in
bpalmer
qizwiz: there is a builtin lisp interpreter for "elisp"
qizwiz
bpalmer: what's it called?
bpalmer
qizwiz: emacs (or xemacs , or sxemacs, or ...)
jlf
qizwiz: are you looking for a repl?
qizwiz
jlf: exactly
jlf
,ielm
fsbot
From memory, ielm is [0] Interactive Emacs Lisp Mode
[1] M-x ielm RET
dim
qizwiz: try M-x ielm
qizwiz
yeah!
thanks

qizwiz
I really could play with emacs all day and never get anything "practical" done. I'm trying to make emacs recognize my "apps" key as hyper.
it says in the docs to set w32-apps-modifier to the symbol hyper
maxalwings
(Action) says Hello!
laurus
bpalmer, blah, this obviously just doesn't work

qizwiz
so would that look like (setq w32-apps-modifier 'hyper) or (setq w32-apps-modifier "hyper") ?
laurus
i just don't get why it was working for a few tries and then suddenly stopped... that's so bizarre
qizwiz
the return value isn't giving me enough to go on
jlf
qizwiz: the former designates a symbol, the latter a string
bpalmer
laurus: yeah, I don't know org-specific file variables; you could try setting it manually (how many publish dirs will you actually have, after all?)
laurus
bpalmer, I'm not really even sure. I just found an older version of the file and I'm going to try running that. One publish dir I think
bpalmer
so you can just set it absolutely in your ~/.emacs :)
laurus
bpalmer, yeah, hehe, good point, but I'm trying to get it to work from the get-go without hacking too much like that
qizwiz
ok, that worked too. thank you :-)
if I could only get ri-emacs working...apparently it doesn't play nice with windoze :-(
bpalmer
,ri-emacs
fsbot
I think ri-emacs is an Emacs interface to ri, a ruby documentation tool <http://rubyforge.org/projects/ri-emacs/>.
qizwiz
I've been debugging it for 3 days...thankfully i'm no longer married and can do my work-work when I get home :-)
dim

e1f
did emacs come between you and your ex-wife?
technomancy
qizwiz: I've got a half-assed reimplementation of ri.el; are you using that?
dim
wow, W w
technomancy
actually two half-assed reimplementations
qizwiz
heh...gambling did. I've been sober for not quite a year now
technomancy
no idea if they'd behave better on Windows, but thought I'd mention it.
qizwiz
fu*k, I really should stop using the internet as my personal catholic priest :-/
technomancy
qizwiz: 25 hail-marys, stat.
e1f
not for divorce!
qizwiz
but she's a complete narcissist, control-freak...and just plain mean
the amount of money I'm putting into therapy and drugs is just sad
pgas
M-x doctor
qizwiz
:-)
win
technomancy
pgas: yeah, that will leave more money left over for drugs.
qizwiz
yeah, and only one of the drugs is any "fun"...
prozac is worthless for anything but what it's used for
jrockway
yikes, slow connections can make you insane
i started typing "dd" into my emacs buffer...
qizwiz
and it screws you up in other ways too
e1f
they treat gambling addiction with prozac? does it help?
qizwiz
actually, I quit gamblign on my own
e1f
ok
bpalmer
jrockway: dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/irc-#emacs
qizwiz
I met a girl who showed me some appreciation and I realized I didn't have to hang on to my "spite hobbies"...and I've downgraded my "women are pure evil" to "women are partly evil"
jrockway
dd as in "delete this line in vi"
not sure how i know any vi commands, or why i would type that
fledermaus
(Action) blinks
qizwiz
jrockway: that's also a command in linux for...diskdump? datadump? somethign like that
jrockway
yeah, as bpalmer mentioned
dim
dd -> C-M-DEL just in case
dd is copy & convert
but cc was already taken
I love this one :)
jrockway
(Action) has killed many an X session after remembering the default keybinding for backward-kill-sexp
emacs says it's "ESC C-backspace"
my brain translates that to "meta-control-backspace"
and then my X session dies...
qizwiz
I actually found how to make emacs intercept my M-tab before windows gets it today. kinda proud of that
dim
C-S-DEL is what I wanted to mention
johnw
how?
jrockway
whoa, how?
(Action) uses C-M-i on windows, which he hates
dim
jrockway: option nozap
jrockway
on windows?
qizwiz
one sec, lemme grab my .emacs
dim
sorry, re C-M-DEL, tell X not to zap
jrockway
yeah
qizwiz
(w32-register-hot-key [M-tab])
jrockway
i don't mind killing my X session
dim
emacs-server?
jrockway
i use daemontools to start emacs --daemon when i log in
so i don't lose any work
yeah
dim
hehe I should consider
qizwiz
jrockway: in windows?
dim
how you get your ssh-agent in the emacs-server env?
jrockway
no :)
laurus
bpalmer, are you still around?
jrockway
the first daemontools is started after that
it is actually started in my xinitrc
dim
oh yes user level init system
I'm not sure I want to do that :)
qizwiz
I should either revamp this box as ubuntu or freebsd or something or do everything in virtual-box...I'm lazy about some stuff, though :-)
jrockway
http://github.com/jrockway/dotfiles/blob/master/xinitrc
qizwiz
I use gnuserv, but it errors out on first startup
dim
debian / kFreeBSD if you can't choose
qizwiz
it works, but gives me an error
jrockway
on windows, i just manually start emacs when i log in, then i maximize it and try to imagine i'm on UNIX
with eshell, i am usually successful in maintaining that illusion
qizwiz
'cept eshell can be painfully slow
jrockway
haven't had that problem
the only thing that bothers me is that "eshell does not support input redirection"
and it tells you that as you are trying to tab-complete a filename to input-redirect
qizwiz
and cygwin feels like the special olympics...no offense to anyone or anything intended
jrockway
yeah
i have only had to write a windows application once
and i used haskell, so i didn't really feel like i was on windows
i just stayed in ghci (inside emacs) and all was well
qizwiz
hahaha...nice
cluck
bpalmer: actually that is possible, both on plan9 and on linux compatible OSs
technomancy
jrockway: can you get rid of window decorations?
qizwiz
does anybody do anything extreme like use ratpoison or whatever the haskell version of that is?
cluck
bpalmer: meet ii: http://tools.suckless.org/ii
qizwiz
that's how I first heard of haskell
technomancy
plenty of xmonad/stump users in here
I'm a WM loser who just uses devilspie
cluck
(on plan9 everything is a fs by default so ii is likely unneeded)
dim
qizwiz: I use awesome
qizwiz
yeah, xmonad...I tried getting stump workign with cygwin and was woefully unsuccessful...I'll probably try again in a few months
jrockway
i use xmonad on unix
johnw
yay eshell!
jrockway
on windows, i just drag the window off the screen, make it bigger than the screen, and then move it so i can't see the borders
qizwiz
I miss the mac...if i didn't have to give away all my money to the ex, I'd get another one
cluck
technomancy: don't feel bad, inevitabilities do happen, i've been using wmii lately due to stump's breakage on sid :)
johnw
qizwiz: how long do you have to do that for?
qizwiz
uh...18 years :-
:-0
:-)
johnw
damn that's to SUCK
dim
,g devilspie
fsbot
[google] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Devilspie
http://live.gnome.org/DevilsPie
johnw
got to
qizwiz
child support, my friend
technomancy
cluck: the problem is it's not awful enough to get me to sink time into learning enough haskell to switch.
johnw
ahh
well, then it's more for the kid than the wife, eh?
qizwiz
my little girl is amazing, though
yeah, it is
johnw
that's cool then
qizwiz
but the way she's squeezing me hurts more than anything ever
johnw
are your ribs weak?
dim
technomancy: consider awesome if you want an easy enough escape, then join me into having it's author consider guile or sth rather than lua :)
bpalmer
... consider guile?
(Action) stares suspiciously at dim
johnw
do people really use guile?
bpalmer
laurus: partially
qizwiz
i'm probably the most sensitive hetero man ever...at least I feel that way now
technomancy
nothing wrong with lua, just don't have time for it.
cluck
technomancy: wmii can use ANY language (by default uses sh iirc), stump uses cl
jrockway
seems easier to learn haskell
bpalmer
cluck: ii looks interesting.
laurus
bpalmer, never mind, I thought I figured something out and wanted to mention it :P
technomancy
cluck: yeah, but last I checked its xinerama support was weak.
laurus
But it was just fail :P
jrockway
as the "haskell" required for xmonad basically consists of cutting and pasting
johnw
qizwiz: do you cry when you see broken birds lying on the ground?
bpalmer
cluck: not enormously sure I want people to write irc bots in sh, though
jrockway
just only cut from and paste into the middle of lists, then you'll be fine
bpalmer
jrockway: you mean using the Cut monad, right?
qizwiz
no, i'm still hetero, remember? :-)
johnw
haha
dim
bpalmer: I don't know guile enough but it's a scheme that has some elisp in it too, can't be that bad?
johnw
so, white and antique bone are still the same color
dim
there are too many schemes for extending a C program
jrockway
my favorite is "not using C in the first place"
dim
plt-scheme, scheme48, elk, bigloo, guile, and the others
qizwiz
ok, so who told me they had another implementation of ri-emacs?
technomancy
learning an FP language specifically for the purpose of UI coding seems like the wrong way to go about it IMHO
since in general FP is awesome for everything but UIs.
jrockway
why do you think that?
qizwiz
technomancy: can I take a look at your ri.el?
technomancy
jrockway: most UIs are pure state
cluck
dim: i agree awesome would suck a lot less if it used a scheme instead of lua for config (even guile's current breakage would be an improvement over lua)
technomancy
qizwiz: http://github.com/technomancy/ri.el
jrockway
technomancy: i see UIs as stream transformers
technomancy
qizwiz: one of the branches contains a rewrite that might be relevant
jrockway: it's true that window management is less stateful than most UIs
so maybe that's an overly broad generalization
