how can i formulate something for but, which should be on the current character, word or sentence ?
but-char, but-word but-sentence ?
or but-line
but-paragraph
instead of writing something new, we can just use oop not ?
so is there something we can use ?

hi i'm using emacs with viper and vimpulse mode (can you tell i'm a newcomer from vim?). i'm trying to emulate vim's softtabstop option
and have found this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1450169/how-do-i-emulate-vims-softtabstop-in-emacs but i can't get it to work
any tips?
ams
don't use viper, and embrace the one true editor as it was written by god
_oggy
haha
ams
t'was an serious suggestion
_oggy
ok, let me rephrase: any sinful tips?
ams
well, you could use non-free softwrae, and be sentenced to use vim.
vim it self is not a sin though... it is free software

_oggy
i'm using opera for my web browsing... i guess that's a start!
Riastradh
_oggy, this is not an answer to your question, but you may find it helpful to use M-\ (delete-horizontal-space)or M-SPC (just-one-space). Try typing them when the point is as in example 2.
Ober2
browse-url-opera?
_oggy
Riastradh: thanks, but i'd have to tab my way back with the first one
Riastradh
_oggy, just use M-; (comment-dwim) for that.
_oggy
could it be that the SO solution is correct, but that something (viper?) is getting in the way of remaping?
Riastradh: but that then takes me back to the original level of indent. i want to go one back
w00tz
hmm, i thought tabbar was what i wanted, but I dont' think it does what I want. In vim7, there's the option of tabs, which is basically a group of buffers defiend under that tab (think of it as a group of buffers). I can cycle through these tabs to context switch between say something like an XML file vs a tab that has 4 buffers open. Can I do something like this in emacs?
sepult
yes, you have to get elscreen
w00tz
thanks, i'll look into it

hello all, how do you drop to shell mode using emacs GNU 23
ysph`
xx7sinsx: you mean the underlying shell from whence you lauched emacs, or a shell mode within emacs?
xx7sinsx
Shell mode within emacs
kodein
didya try M-x shell
xx7sinsx
that worked thank you.
im new to using emacs and trying to get use to it
ysph
also useful, M-x ansi-term (will let you run bash) and M-x eshell (accepts lisp as well as shell commands)
snogglethorpe
anyone else notice their connection getting dropped frequently?
damd
no, not really
fualo
weird, M-delete is not longer kill word right
I shouldn't have to define that in .emacs? right? backward-kill-word
something must have broken it
damd
fualo: it should be bound to that by default
but "kill word right"? do you mean "right" as in "correctly" or as in the direction?
fualo
damd: yea
damd: when I press it, it says M-kp-delete is undefined
is kp something macish?
I am on the latest build of emacs 23 on OS X
damd
i have no idea what kp is

so it's something in emacs
not my configuration, pressumably
damd

oh, I see
option (meta) - delete doesn't kill word, and I'm trying to figure out why
I think I need to find M-kp-delete to kill-word, as my keyboard thinks M-kp-delete = M-delete
er, I guess emacs thinks that
jlf

Bound to: nil
hober
When you type C-h k, and then type M-DEL, what does Emacs say?
fualo
hober: M-kp-delete is undefined
this is in emacs -Q to avoid any mess with .emacs
hober: is it as simple as binding the normal M-delete function to M-kp-delete? or is there something deeper here
M-delete (the button next to end) is supposed to kill words right of it right? Or am I taking crazy pills?
I guess OS X needs: (global-set-key (kbd "<M-kp-delete>") 'kill-word). Can any other OS X users confirm this?
twb
I'm not licensed to run OS X, sorry.

fualo: maybe (define-key function-key-map (kbd "M-<kp-delete>") (kbd "M-DEL")) does TRT? Untested of course.
fualo
I think I should just stop using Del and us M-d instead
I found the source of my confusion: aquamacs defines M-delete as kill-word, and I thought this was a default emacs command until I switched to emcas 23
well, one source of confusion
srbaker
how do i make a buffer read only?

sepult
wtf
why does autojoing skip some channels ?
in erc
jlf
sepult: possibly because the channels are +R and you have not yet identified
sepult
really ?
oh
wait
jlf
(Action) keeps meaning to make autojoining happen as a post-identify hook
sepult
no, i have a key-binding for the erc server set with a password even
i mean i defined a key-binding for joining the server, and the
server-spec has the :password in it
jlf
that doesn't mean the transaction with nickserv is done at the time autojoin happens
could be something else, but that's my guess.. are those channels +R?
sepult
wait, is nickserv module not enabled for erc ? i did change some
configs maybe i deleted it ...
cluck
sepult: it's a glitch in erc, the autojoin function is dumb and doesn't wait for the nick to be identified before issuing the join commands
jlf
(Action) .oO("why didn't i think of that?")
sepult
cluck: i don't get it, if that be true, it would do the same with
other channels too, and besides i am using the nickserv module of erc so....
jlf
(Action) gives up
technomancy
(Action) has noticed that too; very annoying

yeah found that by accident and got next-buffer working in s/xemacs but not previous-buffer :(
e1f
(Action) was disappointed at the non-existent reaction to his call for a post-modern emacs
mantis
Hm. I've activated the keybindings by editing my .emacs like it says on the homepage for windmove. But when I try to use it, all I get is an error message:
No window left from selected window
Anyone know how I can fix this ?
twb
mantis: that would be because you're in the leftmost window, and are trying to move left
mantis
I've got a about three buffers open. If use <shift+right> I get the equivalent message for moving right.
sshelagh
e1f: so tell us your vision of a post modern emacs. I'll listen for a short time
mantis
But I don't really know what a 'window' is.
will these commands actually work from emacs -nw ? I use emacs from a term all the time.
