junis: you need to set the env variable properly. export LPDEST="OfficeJet_6100_Series" for example in your.bash_env or wherever.
junis: sorry, printername in emacs . e.g (setq printer-name (quote OfficeJet_6100))

karme: define properly? e.g I print from emacs -nw and I had to set it.
I remember though I had issues with CUPs, so I might revist that since it should just use lpr afaik so if that works form a shell then print-buffer should "just work" too.

when starting an emacs server for the first time using emacsclient is it possible to get a frame up earlier in the process? Currently it sits there at full cpu for the emacs startuptime before drawing a frame with the server is properly fully initialised.

Anybody know of a quicker way to jump to the definition of an elisp function than F1 f 'function-name' and then clicking on the link?
damd
malsyned: C-h f
;P
malsyned
damd, I've re-bound C-h to backspace. So, snarky *and* inaccurate.
damd
it wasn't my intention to be snarky..
legumbre
find-function
malsyned
damd, it's possible I don't know what that word means :P
legumbre
,df find-function
fsbot
find-function is an interactive compiled Lisp function in
`find-func.el'.
(find-function FUNCTION)
Find the definition of the FUNCTION near point.
Finds the source file containing the definition of the function
near point (selected by `function-called-at-point') in a buffer and ..[Type ,more]
damd
how do i find out what function a button click executes?
malsyned
damd, C-h k <click someplace>
just like with a keystroke.

jlf
malsyned: legumbre linked you the function
damd
i just get "<down-mouse-1> at that spot runs the command mouse-drag-region"
malsyned
legumbre, jlf: that works great, thanks.
damd, keep reading, the help will have a few sections.
damd
well i also get "push-button" and "mouse-set-point" but that doesn't help me very much :(
malsyned
damd, you want to know what function push-button runs on that button, perhaps?
damd
yes
malsyned
damd, yeah, I'm not sure how to get that. I went digging through push-button and the things it called once, but I don't remember learning what I needed.
damd
it could be useful for things like what you just asked about
malsyned
damd, agreed. I tried that before I came here to ask.

Hi all, I am having issues with tramp. I am using it to edit remote files over ftp. It works well for a while and then it freezes while writing. The minibuffer says "Writing <filename>" and the entire emacs session is locked. I have to kill it from the command line. Google isn't helping, has anyone seen this before?
damd
i've had nothing but bad experiences with tramp myself
technomancy
same
deech
then what do you recommend to edit files over ftp?
malsyned
I've used it with good success with ssh and sudo, but I've never tried it over FTP. FTP is a pretty sketchy protocol to begin with.
technomancy
deech: ftp is deprecated
sshfs works well for sftp
deech
I don't believe the client I am working for has the ssh port open.
technomancy
that's a pretty huge red flag
malsyned
does gnome's gvfs system work with ftp?
technomancy
if you're transfering important files over ftp, how to best do that with Emacs is the least of your problems
if the files are actually important to you, that is
deech
technomancy: they are just php files. I am working on a remote website
fledermaus
tramp rocks
technomancy
sorry to be a smartass about it, but if it doesn't work well there's a reason for it
"Doctor, it hurts when I [...]"
fledermaus
but you can't use tramp to edit over ftp, tramp doesn't handle ftp file paths, ange-ftp does
technomancy
my biggest beef with tramp is that it often breaks simple sudo usage in eshell
even when I've turned tramp-mode off
fledermaus
dunno anything about that.
are you sure that's not a bug in eshell?
technomancy
actually... it might be
it might just not be checking tramp-mode at all
M-x report-emacs-bug time
deech
actually it might be an ange-ftp issue. I just found out that the site disconnects you after 15 minutes of idle time. That might be the issue.

tommylommykins
urm, Am I about to get support from a bot?
bob2
you're being encouraged to provide more detail
so you can be better served by the emacs hivemind
deech
Just an update, I quit using ange-ftp and installed curlftpfs(http://curlftpfs.sourceforge.net/). Works great so far!
tommylommykins
ah, the upshot is that I've tried editing various .el files (can't remember which ones) trying to find pointersto the location of the interpreter
bob2
right, so, don't do that
undo whatever edits you did
unless you're just talking about ~/.emacs
malsyned
tommylommykins, is there no variable like inferior-scheme-program?
fledermaus
,install
fsbot
fledermaus, install is [0] To install a <file>.el, save it to, say ~/elisp
[1] add to the beginning of ~/.emacs: (add-to-list 'load-path "~/elisp"),
[2] now FOLLOW THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS IN THE FILE, typically adding (require '<file>) to the end of ~/.emacs, ..[Type ,more]
tommylommykins
Generally, these edits have some sort of effect, since my changes change th eerror messages I get..
fledermaus
,more
fsbot
[3] For packages comprising many files, first download to a directory like ~/elisp/packages/ and follow the included instructions,
[4] see http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?LoadPath,
[5] the site-wide emacs extension directory is usually `/usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp'
tommylommykins
urm, where do I find the windows equivalent of ~/.ena
~/.emacs ?
fledermaus
you see the it where it says "randomly start hacking on miscellaneous library files without taking backups" ?
No?
Because it doesn't say that!
remove your local hacks and start over.
jlf
oh snap!
bob2
literally ~/.emacs
tommylommykins
bob2: On windows? I fail to spot/find/generally locate
fledermaus
seriously. If you've been randomly editing, you're not in a recoverable position, and there's no telling how many bugs you may have introduced.

bob2
tommylommykins: seriously
tommylommykins: C-x C-f ~/.emacs
tommylommykins
Thanks; apologiess for being a failperson
bob2
tommylommykins: it might be easier to reinstall, if you're not 100% sure you can undo all that you did
tommylommykins
Yeah, I will do
hmm
That didn't dig anything up
I guess I just generally fail
bob2
you're obsessing a bit
jlf
tommylommykins: C-x C-f ~/.emacs RET ;; oh hai C-x C-s
bob2
suspect you just need: (setq scheme-program-name "mzscheme")
etc
sm
buffers in linum mode, possibly only when window is split horizontally, sometimes start flickering the numbers on and off. Would anyone have a fix ?
emacs 23.1.50.1 in text mode
bob2
can you reproduce it with -q + (global-linum-mode)?
(ie is it linum itself or some interaction with some other thing you're running)
sm
that's something to try, though it takes a while to show
bob2
,,-q
fsbot
hmm, -q is if you start emacs with "emacs -q" and the problem goes away, it's YOUR FAULT; check your .emacs. If "emacs -q" has problems and "emacs -Q" does not, it's caused by your distro or local admin.
bob2
maybe I mean -Q
no, -q
Lorde
why is all text in my emacs suddenly bold? i can change the default font to oblique, bold and bold oblique, but when i go back to regular it says regular in the font selector but the text comes out bold anyway... i use arch linux. any ideas?
jlf
Lorde: C-u C-x = with the point at a bolded character might be informative
Lorde
huh? it worked the first time (i got a new window showing tons of info) but when i try again it triggers upcase-region...
oh, i pressed C-x C-u xD
yup, here's how it is: i created an HTML file with 4 rows: <b>,<u>,<i> and plain text. C-u C-x = tells me the bolded text is bold, underlined is underlined and italic is italic. the regular text has no "face" property but is still rendered exactly like the bold text
(in the emacs text buffer i mean, not when rendering the HTML)
jlf
Lorde: wbat's the font name? (under the display: line)
Lorde
xft:-urw-Nimbus Mono L-normal-normal-normal-*-13-*-*-*-m-0-iso10646-1 (#x46) for the "regular" text and exactly the same for bold text
hm, it seems this only happens for the Nimbus Mono L and Monospace fonts...
also, ALL regular text gets bolded, including the minibuffer and mode bar
malsyned
damd, the answer to your question before is something like (button-get (button-at (point)) 'action)

I use color-theme.el, this is for a friend
parolang
That's how I did before I started using color-theme.
Yeah...just M-x customize-face, then it will prompt for a face, enter "default"
To my knowledge, all the faces inherit from default.
