maybe I was too quick to delete it.

seems like yank-rectangle works like open-rectangle. is there a command that will push lines down when you yank a rectangle?
in emacs 22, at lteast
i want to grab a rectangle from w3m, then yank it as if it were an ordinary yank
hacim
ok, why the hell doesn't pasting always work from X?
(Action) curses out the cat
mns_
ryomanolonger, cua-mode maybe ? it has the ability to do that.
I use it with csv files a lot.
ggole
jlf: nice hat
ryomanolonger
mns_: thanks. still wonder why yank-rectangle does not.
mns_: do you know the command name? i don't want to run cua mode.
mns_
ryomanolonger, not really
I just do C-<Return> move point around to select the rectangle I need and do the yank.
I've only been using for a few weeks.
ryomanolonger
my use case is web pages that surround stuff using whitespace

Are you guys & gals using xft support in Emacs?
In particular, do you know of any monospaced fonts *other* than DejaVu Sans Mono that are nice for Emacs and have a reasonably 'complete' set of glyphs for Unicode text?
kodein
,terminus
fsbot
I heard terminus is [0] The Terminus font is a complete set of fixed-size fonts designed especially for the usage in terms. http://www.is-vn.bg/hamster/jimmy-en.html
[1] apt-get install console-terminus xfonts-terminus xfonts-terminus-dos xfonts-terminus-oblique, ..[Type ,more]
kodein
's what I use, at least
legumbre
(Action) uses droid sans
arm
terminus, the best fonts for console so far
and emacs of course
benny
terminus has a reasonably complete set of glyphs for unicode?
kodein
yes.
keramida
ISTR testing terminurs but it failed the 'has to include at least Greek Unicode glyphs' text
I'll give it a try again
Thanks :)
DraX
Inconsolata is nice, but i don't know about it's unicodeness
droid didn't destinguish 0 and O enough for me if memory serves
legumbre
DraX: memory serves you
DraX
Inconsolata has a slashed 0 which i like more than the dotted one that deja vu sans mono uses
keramida
indeed
DraX
there was a mac one i actually kind of liked, but i would have had to steal it
can't remember the name now though

I'd love to find a way to dynamically substitute glyphs in xterm windows too, so for example `foo' would use typographically correct quotes. But for now I'm ok with X11 frames of Emacs :)
fontconfig seems to be the way to do this sort of thing, but its manual is, uhm, let's say "a bit cryptic"
DraX
latex gave me the bad habit of doing `` ''
keramida
I blame Texinfo
DraX
my senior thesis surely cemented that behavior for the rest of my life :)
mns_
that's why I didn't do a senior theseis, all those bad habits !!
keramida
After typing the technical specifications of a few programs at an old job in *.texi format the ``tex-style'' quotes became part of my finger memory
DraX
yup, basically the same here
mns_: it was obligatory
mns_
we had a choice a thesis or two semesters of Software Engineering or one semester of compiler writing.
keramida
Yay, copy-paste of typographic quotes in DejaVu works, e.g. in Good morning, Dave, said HAL.
At least it *seems* to work for local display
qed
Erm -- I'm not sure what's going on here -- I have Meta_L mapped to one key, and Alt_L mapped to another -- For some reason xmonad is treating both of them like the meta key so I can't use it in emacs
Not sure why this isn't working -- it was working before...
keramida
qed: "xmodmap -pm" will show you the currently active "modifier keys" for X11
rzl
hello there
keramida
It looks like you have at least the following:
mod1 Alt_L (0x40), Meta_L (0x9c)
rzl
how to know when i'm being named in an erc buffer ?
keramida
qed: If that's what you see, then both keys are treated as 'mod1'
qed
keramida: yeah i have Alt_L Alt_R and Meta_L
damnit
how do I fix this keramida ?
twb
keramida: what's qed trying to do?
qed
twb: i have xmonad setup so it treats Alt_L as the meta key for xmonad window operations
keramida
twb: map Meta_L and Alt_L to different keys
qed
Meta_L needs to be a different key and not be treated as the meta key in xmonad
if that makes sense
twb
Fix xmonad so it uses mod3 or mod4 instead.
qed
mod3 is empty in my xmodmap, mod4 is all super/hyper -- how can i make Alt_L/R exist on mod3 or mod4
twb
import XMonad
main = xmonad $ defaultConfig { modMask = mod4Mask }
qed
instead of mod1
twb
qed: it's wrong to make Alt_L map to mod3 or mod4.
rzl`
how to know when i'm being named in an erc buffer ?
qed
twb: can I map Meta_L to mod3 or 4?
twb
qed: it's wrong to make Meta_L map to mod3 or mod4.
qed
hmmm bummer
mns_
rzl`, in my case in the mode line the channel where I am mentioned, turns blue if I'm not in that buffer
rzl`
mns_: yeah, but i want something like a hook
raziel
mns_: yes, but i need something like a hook
mns_
I'm sure there is a hook for it.
qed
twb: what would be your recommendation for resolving this then? you'd just change xmonad to use a different modifier? Can I not have a Meta_L and Alt_L behave differently?
twb
qed: why do you think Meta and Alt should be different?
qed
twb: so xmonad responds to one
and emacs responds to the other
twb
Then you're stupid. Use mod4 and Super_L or Hyper_L -- whichever is on mod4.
qed
I cannot do that because in my windows VM I need Meta and Alt
twb
Brokenness of Windows is not my problem.
keramida
there's your bug... you are using windows :)
(Action) runs
qed
it's a windows /VM/
jesus christ
nevermind.
twb
Brokenness of your VM is also not my problem.
qed
none of this is your problem
keramida
It was a joke. You don't really *have* to use Alt_L and Meta_L in different keys.
Emacs responds equally well to ESC x ... to
too
qed
yes im aware of this -- im just trying to differentiate the two within Linux -- ill figure out a way -- this was working fine last week
raziel
mns_: aren't you aware of any hook =
?
pity, i'd really need it
mns_: isn't there an irc channel about erc ?
keramida
The best way to make this works fine is to keep Meta_L as mod1 and remap the xev event of your 'Alt' key to Alt_L = mod4
twb
Unless you have a Sun or space cadet keyboard, you probably don't even have a meta key.
bremner
I have a list of symbols, and I want to make a new list of symbols by prefixing each one. Should I convert to string, concat, and intern each one?
keramida
at least that's what I often do
I remap one of the Windows keys to Meta_L and keep Alt_L and Meta_L separate
twb
keramida: except that some X clients are broken and will ASSUME that Alt_L means mod1 and vice versa
qed
twb: i have a happy hacking keyboard. I have a Command/Meta key and an Alt/Opt key
twb
keramida: it's simpler to just leave the mod mapping the way your find it
qed: the command key is Super or Hyper.
qed: it is NOT meta
qed
twb: not so in my case -- i have a Muhenkan_L key without remapping
keramida
bremner: it seems to be the easiest way, but I am not sure if it's the best
technomancy
maybe try Kamehameha_L
qed
bahaha
technomancy
I've got that bound to M-x hadoken
qed
my hair just turned yellow
was that the intended effect?
technomancy
as long as you have amazing fighting skills
qed
they're bordering on amazing
docgnome
anyone have any references about doing multiple imap accounts with wanderlust?
keramida
bremner: e.g. in Common Lisp http://paste.lisp.org/display/94808
bremner
keramida: like (let (fsym (intern (concat "notmuch-show-get-" (symbol-name sym)))) I suppose
qed
anyway -- keramida & twb -- the reason I want Meta and Alt in windows is so i can use xkeymacs, Windows will only treat Meta_L as Meta -- I can use Esc as meta, but it's not efficient for editing stuff in the windows VM
bremner
yeah, same idea.
seems to work. Now I'm confused about fset. Time to read
keramida
bremner: (fset 'foo (lambda () (message "Hi!"))) lets you use 'foo as a symbol at the first part of a form, e.g.
(foo) => "Hi!"
bremner
so if foo is a variable (fset foo defn) should bind the symbol in foo?
keramida
it sets the function cell of the symbol 'foo to point at the code of a callable function
if foo is already a symbol, it probably has a value cell
so (fset foo ...) will *evaluate* foo and set the value's function cell
you probably want to quote 'foo in fset
