outsid3r
damd: but why it makes more sense to you?
damd
outsid3r: it's all just parentheses! makes sense.
not "int hello(char[] what) { return something ? foo : bar; }
(defun hello (what) (if something foo bar))
aep
i'm getting "Enabling Flyspell mode gave an error" all sudden. any idea how to debug that?
outsid3r
damd: well i prefer C syntax, it's more expressive
damd
outsid3r: depends on what you mean by 'expressive'
outsid3r
damd: in my opinion a language should have symbols for many types of operations
technomancy
tromey: I've got two mainline package.el fixes since 0.9: one bug that prevents installation of one of my projects, and also multi-server capabilities
outsid3r
damd: sure, i agree
technomancy
the former is a no-brainer to push out in a release
the latter perhaps could see more usage before calling it ready

outsid3r
damd: anyway lisp doesn't look bad at all, it looks very simplistic, i must check it better
damd
outsid3r: people tend to think lisp is silly because of the parentheses, so did i. but they slowly grew on my and then i saw the light... it's a beautiful language.
outsid3r
damd: i will study it
damd
outsid3r: fwiw, another way in which lisp is not bloated: "x + y + z + w" vs "(+ x y z w)"
+ is a function in lisp, not an "operator" like in many other languages
outsid3r
damd: yea it's a neat idea
never seen that in any other language
damd
"operators" are really functions with different syntax for virtually no reason and many languages will not easily allow you to create your own.
greboides
ruby shares this idiom(not syntatically though)
bremner

outsid3r
a frame in emacs its like a small window inside a master window ?
bremner
frame is emacs jargon for window
outsid3r
what?
bremner
what you call windows, emacs calls frames
emacs is older than you are
clop
and more senile !
bremner
that isn't clear yet
outsid3r
bremner: i know, it started around 1970
docgnome
is there a way to close all buffers that match a pattern?
outsid3r
bremner: that's why this is the most powerful editor around
technomancy
docgnome: if you've got ido on, just C-x b, type the pattern, and do C-k until they're all gone
mnemonikk
docgnome: ibuffer can do that for you.
outsid3r
so, an emacs pop-up it's a window that appears inside of a frame?

greboides
a popup doesnt appear inside a frame its detached
mnemonikk
docgnome: M-x ibuffer, use `% n' to mark and `D' to delete.
docgnome
hrm.
cvandusen
I wonder what the rationale for % to mark was
outsid3r
how i use emacs elisp interpreter?
technomancy
outsid3r: M-x ielm is a good way to start
greboides

ams: did you write this perchance? http://toroid.org/ams/git-website-howto
specksynder
Is there a light weight extension for abbrevations? I find yasnippet useful, but heavyweight for small things
ams
retroj: no.
retroj
ams: alrighty then, thanks!
specksynder
I just want iter to expand into Ptr< Iterator<> > - and I find it excessive to write an entire snippet file for it
ams
retroj: though, i sure fu*king wish i did
retroj
ams: it's a useful article... i've been using git like that for a long time, and i just happened to notice that the writer's login is also "ams"
ams
retroj: ah.

i'm a completely different ams, with a name that is easily pronouncable in europe.
abbe
specksynder: ams of toroid ?
ams
jeez....
<-- ams of gnu
abbe
:D
ams
retroj is speaking of ams of torid.
ams of gnu and ams of toroid are no relation, and ams of toroid probobly hasnever heard of ams ofgnu
and like uhm, ams of gnu is much much cuter....
he has a cuddly gnu as his mascot
abbe
:D
ams
ams of toroid has like what? a fu*king doughnut?
A FUCKING DOUGHNUT I TELL YOU!!! the insanity
actually, there is one ams that annoys me, he stole my account on sourceware.org by many years...
very annoying to have a completely weirdo, non-standard account that is not ams.

jordanb
It's not an ad hominem because I'm not trying to undermine an argument you're making by attacking you.
I'm just calling you a twit.
ams
jordanb: you are attacking my person, so yes, it is ad hominem.

jlf
anyone know if make supports backtick interpolation? e.g. gcc arg1 arg2 -o`shell-cmd-to-create-filename`
mzz
jlf: afaik the answer is: that'll work in practice, because make just passes all that to the shell, and shells tend to support those backticks
jlf
oh, actual backticks? huh, i'll try, thx
olognation
what's the captcha?
mzz
so the literal answer to your question is "no" (make doesn't support backtick interpolation), but if I'm not completely confused the exact line you gave does work

olognation: also defun has implicit progn's, so your explicit ones are nops
ams
uhm, yeah
Novice Emacs Lisp programmers often try to use the mark for the wrong
purposes. See the documentation of `set-mark' for more information.
from set-mark-command.
mzz
jlf: of course if you use $() you'll actually need $$() because make expands $(this) itself :)
jlf: but yeah, I agree that's more readable
olognation
(Action) is enjoying the yasnippet video.
ams
and
like
olognation: use save-excursion...
olognation
yasnippet looks kind of like having an ide.
(Action) is reading set-mark and set-mark-command docs
(Action) substitutes save-excursion for set-mark-command
specksynder
jlf: how many n00bs did you catch using superflous progns? I remember getting ticked off by you for doing the same thing
olognation
jlf, yasnippet looks really fun.
(Action) must rush off to an olog class.

Hrm. I just did "M-x visit-tags-table" and specified my TAGS path (generated with ctags-exuberant -e). When I do "M-: tags-file-name" I see the correct path. I can visit that file. Yet, in my source when I do "M-." it says "Find variable: no tags file loaded."
