How to get the "raw" string from a string with properties ?
yrk
ngirard_: many string functions have a -no-properties variant
ngirard_: saves the work of stripping them off later
ngirard_
Hi yrk. Actually I wan to store raw strings in a list
I want the list to keep a unique instance of them
(setq l '("a"))
("a")
(add-to-list 'l "a")
("a")
(add-to-list 'l #("a" 0 1 (inherited t)))
("a")
yrk: the "a" string with props were not added, so my problem is elsewhere
was not added ^
yrk: I guess somewhere else in my code I make the assumption that
(list a a) -> '(a)
but list doesn't uniquify
Which function f would "uniquify" a list ?
yrk
ngirard_: not in regards to properties, no
ngirard_
(f a b b) -> (a b)
err rather (f '(a b b)) -> '(a b)
?
paroneayea
hm
hober
add-to-list isn't push
paroneayea
I don't see a hook for when someone private messages you or notes your name in erc

hober
add-to-list only adds if something isn't already in there before
and it compares with EQUAL, iirc
paroneayea
but presumably there must be such a hook right?
hober
"a" is "a", regardless of text properties. (apologies to any objectivists in the channel)
paroneayea
I want to send a message to the notification daemon when I get messaged within erc
yrk
paroneayea: perhaps `erc-echo-notice-hook'?
jlf
paroneayea: dunno offhand, but poke around erc-track
yrk
hm, erc-tracks sounds like a better bet
DuClare
erc-text-matched-hook
This doesn't work for private messages however

so cool that emacs supports irc out of the box
yrk
emms-lastfm-client.el lives!
rgr
wha bother with lastfm when you can emms-streams with mms etc to real radio stations?
yrk
rgr: how is "real" radio and lastfm even related in your mind?
skorpan
i use lastfm for scrobbling and i'm assuming that's what emms-lastfm-client.el does
yrk
skorpan: nope, it streams music from Last.fm
skorpan
wow, that's ... wow.

Please do not ask if anyone uses, knows, is good with, can help you with or is a guru/expert of <some program>. Instead, ask your real question.

skorpan
sorry :(
i never get to do that normally

trying to use a .folders entry of:

but the spaces in "All Mail" or the multiple "@" symbols make wanderlust barf
rgr
give it up skorpan - you are always doing it.
yrk: I said "real" not "Real".

Best emacs email client for GMail?
jlf
,gmail
fsbot
From memory, gmail is [0] at mail.google.com
[1] Try it with emacs-w3m,
[2] see gnusgmail,
[3] at http://emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/GnusGmail
rgr
defn: use gnus and amaze your friends ...
defn
I set up gnus (sort of)
I don't have a fscking clue how to use it
rgr
Its easy.
lol .. no its not. but it soon becomes easy.
did you get your mail with it yet?
defn
sort of lol
every time i start gnus i have to re-add my subscribed folders
rgr
I must admit to never having connected directly to gmail with it. I use getmails to fetch using imap and store in my own dovecot imap server. I do this of course to appear elite.
defn
s, Group: INBOX[ENTER]
rgr, lol
rgr
did you subscribe? "^" select, and "u"?
defn
u?
rgr
u to subscribe to a group.
defn
ah, so Z is unsubscribed
rgr
no. thats u too.
defn
right
rgr
open gnus. Hit "^" to see servers. select your server. press "u" to subscribe. q to quit.
defn
but the Z marks that it's unsubscribed
by select do you mean "hit enter on it"
because right now I see a list of folders on the server, all my gmail folders
rgr
Then when in folder view create a topn "T n" and call it email. The move your newly subscribed group to it using "T m"
u to subscribe to it
is there a u next to them or not?
u toggles it.
defn
there's Z's next to them
if i hit u on one of them, it changes to U
if i hit u again, it changes to a blank
rgr
right. blank means subscribed. then q to go back.
and?
defn
hehe sorry, i screwed something up and hit about 5 letters inside gnus, and wound up with a new draft
redoing the subscriptions, 1 sec
wow i have no idea how to do anything with this stuff lol
(Action) reads
rgr
well?
fsbot
well is, like, a mighty deep subject
rgr
where are you? Have you subscrined now? Can you see email?
defn
sure, ive been able to do that before
im just confused as to the format and such of the threading
rgr
are they sticky groups? Did you quit and restart gnus?
huh? You said you could not keep the groups before.
defn
yeah they're sticky
now
rgr: sorry, i mis-spoke, yes this fixed the groups
now it's syncing all my groups
when is tart up
i start up*
it's a bit slow
is this why people use bbdb?
rgr
no. bbdb is nothing to do with it.
defn
it's only showing me ! items in my inbox
rgr
start reading .... but stick with it.
defn
do you know how to "show all"
rgr
Create topics for a start and add a news server like gmane or eternal-september.
defn
and not just !'d items
rgr
I dont know what ! items are
defn
flagged
or "starred"
rgr
did you flag them? I dont know how direct pop3 works. Maybe you need to flag to download. Cant help.
defn
i guess what i feel like is happening is that at some point i accidentally filtered starred messages
is there a way to turn off filters if they exist?
rgr
no idea. I dont even use filters.
C-h i d m gnus
defn: I just added the secondary select and worked fine for gmail as described here : http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/GnusGmail#toc2

[->] linewrap is [0] M-x auto-fill-mode
[1] M-x toggle-truncate-lines affects the display engine; line breaks do not occur at word boundaries. M-x auto-fill-mode affects what you type. If you type past the fill-column, the paragraph is filled (and lines are wrapped)., ..[Type ,more]

That's the gheyest file termination idea ever.
I bet some flunky di*kwad like Kerighan came up with that.

Then someone invented truncate(2) to make creating such files easy, just to see if the file termination scheme would break :-)

ignorant elisp question: Is there a simple way to make a function private to a file?
consolers
no
you can make a buffer local variable hold an anonymous lambda that you can funcall though
but there is no concept of `file scope'
keramida
The buffer-local trick of consolers is probably as close as you can get to buffer-private code. Emacs Lisp doesn't have namespaces or the concept of source-file local data.
consolers
(hooks work that way)

and a few other things, e.g. key bindings
