emacs-w3m automatically create ~/.w3m directory. I want it to create ~/.emacs.d/.w3m. Which variable do I have to set to ?
homovitruvius
ryoma: I keep the toolbar mostly off, but I can toggle it on/off w/ F1 for modes I'm not very familiar with
jlf
nimred: more likely w3m is creating the directory
nimred
jlf ah ok so no way to change this behaviour ?
jlf
nimred: dunno, i don't use w3m. you could always symlink it..
nimred
arf
chrisb
check w3m-default-directory and w3m-default-save-directory variables
nimred
chrisb i have already tested those variables but it didn't change anything :(
also tried w3m-profile-directory
:(
jlf
nimred: you could use strace to see who's creating that directory

bpalmer`
w3m is a separate executable , so probably has its own configuration file
jlf
that's what i told him
lisppaste
rodyaj pasted "Run shell command on save hook" at http://paste.lisp.org/display/91473
rodyaj
hi. I'm trying to make a hook that runs a shell command if a .org file is saved. I'm unsure how to check if the buffer filename has .org in it.
and would like to know how I would do that.
nimred
jlf bpalmer` ok will think about it tomorrow. Time to go to bed. Thanks anyway :)
bpalmer`
rodyaj: string-match and buffer-file-name are the key ingredients
and make sure you hang your function on the right hook for saving that's tied to a particular filename.
probably after-save-hook
homovitruvius
rodyaj: use file-name-extension or check for the major-mode to be org-mode (this is safer in case you or others decided to have org files not ending in .org)
impetuousfool
hi ... i have a few rather detailed/technical questions about the need/use of purecopy for menu text in 23.1.50 ... anyone interested?
rodyaj
is the value of the current major-mode not stored in the variable 'major-mode'? I'm using this now:
lisppaste
rodyaj annotated #91473 "untitled" at http://paste.lisp.org/display/91473#1
fsmunoz
rodyaj: it returns a symbol though, not a string
try with (eq 'org-mode major-mode)
(and string-match would be overkill IMO, (equal ...) would suffice for that.
rodyaj
fsmunoz: with eq it returns "function definition is void" for major-mode
fsmunoz
rodyaj: are you putting major-mode inside a list? Like (major-mode)?
impetuousfool
basically, when is the use of purecopy required/recommended, i.e. just for :help text or menu labels too. .... the menu-bar stoped working ... it was visible, but clicking on default menus made all default menus disappear. I issolated the problem to add on and distribution libraries that didn't use purecopy. Adding purecopy corrected menu symptoms.
fsmunoz
rodyaj: well, I know you are. Don't, it's a variable, not a function.
lisppaste
rodyaj annotated #91473 "untitled" at http://paste.lisp.org/display/91473#2
rodyaj
I have that
fsmunoz
Seems correct
rodyaj
maybe I need to restart emacs. I was doing eval-buffer on my .emacs
fsmunoz
You just need to evaluate that txt
go to after the last paren and do C-x C-e RET

rodyaj
yea it seems to be working when I do that but for some reason when I save a file it still says that
fsmunoz
Oh
impetuousfool
The top level info directory is wacked using info+.el ... Filesets.el is DOA, It does custom builds of menus. Other libraries do not use purecopy and operate normally
fsmunoz
Of course
chrisdone
in case anyone finds it useful (my personal take on timeclock.el based on being interrupted constantly at work) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0U_lUHQekpU
fsmunoz
rodyaj: restart emacs
rodyaj: all the previous versions are in that hook now
defn
Is there any way, in a buffer connected to slime, to evaluate within the document?
rodyaj
ah I see
fsmunoz
rodyaj: you can remove them one by one, but if you're not married to your current session I would just restart.
defn
like to make the actual evaluation show up as text in the buffer?
rodyaj
yep. right thanks for the help everyone.
defn
like: (macroexpand-1 '(-> true (if "clojure))) ; hit the command...and in the same buffer you're in right now:
; => (if true "clojure")
shows up
impetuousfool
There is one bug report about adding purecopy to all menu-bar :help text. 2 or more others. attributed to readkey for example, that appear to be related. If I can get more specifics my hacks could be submitted as patches
defn
anyone?
fsbot
Please do not ask if anyone uses, knows, is good with, can help you with or is a guru/expert of <some program>. Instead, ask your real question.

Quick calculator: C-x * q
quotemstr
(Action) loves GNU calc
It is one of the least appreciated features of Emacs.
parolang
quotemstr: Yeah, I've been playing with it lately :)
You just get the sense that no one knows about it.
5
quotemstr
Well, it's an antique.
parolang
nevermind, embed mode won't work in ERC :)
quotemstr
But not all antiques are obsolete or non-functional. Hell, they're often better.
parolang
Yeah, seems the last update was in 2001
jlf
(Action) tries M-x abacus, no joy
parolang
I think there is abacus-mode out there somewhere.
jlf
,abacus
fsbot
AbacusMode -- at http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?AbacusMode
parolang
Always joy in emacs.
jlf
i love the ascii art screenshot on that page
parolang
But yeah, I don't think anyone has really improved on GNU calc for what it does.
chrisdone
anyone else often type C-w in non-emacs windows and suffer the consequences?
quotemstr
ISTR some changes to calc in the Emacs trunk
jlf
what is "non-emacs windows"???
fsbot
Definitely
ryoma
non-"emacs windows"?
are you sure, fsbot?
parolang
quotemstr: cool
quotemstr
fsbot: can entropy be reversed
fsbot
[Too many DB matches] Is it clean in other dimensions?
quotemstr
fsbot: Yes.
fsbot
try: CategoryEshell EmergencyEscape LoggingYesOrNoP RyanYeske WikiBayesianNetwork yesod YesOrNoP yesterday yesudeep
quotemstr
fsbot: But I don't want any of those.
fsbot

I seldom use calc, but it has saved me a lot of times. Doing some financial calculations based on maintenance contracts in a PDF, what a bore, but at least with calc I could use the "select all the numbers in this rectangle and add the all up".
parolang
fsmunoz: I'll have to learn how to do that :)
fsmunoz
parolang: is one of those needs born out of desperation.
It was simple in the end. a key combo with a V somewhere, let me check.
parolang
I've been playing with embedded mode and the CAS.
Yeah, I'm a nerd :)
jlf
calc mode is nice for xor'ing long series of dwords :|
parolang
It's just crazy the amount of stuff in calc.
fsmunoz
C-x * r RET V R +
This "reduces", which is crazy math talk for adding a bunch of stuff up.
parolang
heh, works
fsmunoz
Yes, it's brilliant stuff.
As you can see my math needs are rather modest (adding stuff, removing stuff), but the data entry facilities alone make it a great package.
wgreenhouse
calc can also interface with gnuplot
rgr
calc can tickle your tonsils too. There is nothing it can not do :-)
parolang
Yeah. I've never really used an RPN calculator before either, but I understand why it's nice. You can just throw stuff on the stack without thinking about it.
wgreenhouse
enter numbers first, think later
parolang
yeah
rgr
can you remove numbers though from an arbitraty place?
parolang
rgr: I'd have to look through the manual.
fsmunoz
Yes, it does
parolang
Looks like you have to go into calc-edit using ` command.
fsmunoz
No, DEL deletes the last
And C-u -4 DEL deletes the entry #4
parolang
fsmunoz: That's it. ` just edits the top value.
Chalain
If I type C-u 40 *, I get 40 *'s. How do I get 40 0's? C-u 40 0 emacs thinks I mean C-u 400 and awaits further input.
offby1
ooh, that sounds familiar.
8
oops, sorry :)
fsmunoz
tried C-q?
offby1
yeah
fsmunoz
ehehe
I did the same, but didn't press enter :D
offby1
M-4 M-0 C-q 0 4 8 RET ought to do oit
fsmunoz
the radix
damn
offby1
fsmunoz: I'd blame the cats, but they're across the room
fsmunoz
Still
Chalain
fsmunoz: Nope, emacs now has C-u 40 C-q 0- in the minibuffer and is awaiting input.
fsmunoz
RET
but that will print gbberish
belak
...
Chalain
Ah. Yeah, it prints ^@ 40 times
belak
Grr
coldhead
is technomancy around?
belak
wrong window sorry
...
parolang
Chalain: That's a good question :)
Chalain
Probably because C-q 0 means char code 0 or something--since C-q C-j is the code for RET, and j is character 10, which is CR, I think.
fsmunoz
yes
Chalain
Heh. Gross but it works: C-x ( 0 C-x ) C-u 39 C-x C-e
But daaaaang I'll just type the 0's.
parolang
:)
technomancy
coldhead: hi
fsmunoz
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000
Yay
consolers
is this coldhead the same as the same old coldhead?
fsmunoz
C-u 40 C-u 0
Chalain
AWESOME!
Thank you
parolang

coldhead
technomancy: couple of questions about your emacs starter kit. what's the reasoning behind C-c y to bury-buffer?
consolers
y stands for "why" anticipating you'd ask
i used to use C-c b now i use f11
technomancy
coldhead: burY I guess
dunno
hard to find open bindings
offby1
(Action) uses f5 for that
wait, "bury-buffer"? There's an app for that!
(Action) ducks
coldhead
i'm a C-c b man
offby1
coldhead: pshaw. That's Protestant whiskey!
coldhead
SO NEXT UP, i love the username.el convention
but i'm wondering how i'm supposed to cleanly install another package
consolers
gabri.el ?
offby1
I used to enjoy the Democratic convention
technomancy
coldhead: toss it in elpa-to-submit
consolers
youre not in desmoines anymore
technomancy
then submit it to elpa
then remove from elpa-to-submit
coldhead
so e.g. ~/.emacs.d/elpa-to-submit/jabber-etc/ ?
or wait, its probably already in elpa
consolers
instead of elpa, submit it to FSF!
muahaha
offby1
submit to Allah!
consolers
youre having better luck than me derailing this convo!
coldhead what have you done to the real coldhead?
quotemstr
offby1: I'd rather submit to emacs-devel.
coldhead
i guess my meds started working
plus i was real hurt when i found out i was on twb's ignore list
quotemstr
coldhead: What? That's an honor.
coldhead
that guy was like a father to me
offby1
coldhead: ooh, you got the "plonk", eh?
quotemstr
And somehow that reminds me that I need to get back to Lennart Borgman
coldhead
technomancy: so... install to elpa-to-submit, where do i put my configuration?
(loads and (add-hooks and such?
technomancy
that can go in username.el
coldhead
so i WAS doon it rite
thanks for the clarification
technomancy
ah right; yes
quotemstr
"Des Moines" is the last city I'd expect to see mentioned here.
offby1
Mrs Offby1's family is in Des Moines
(Action) is reasonably familiar with the city
