irlchris
any perforce users on tonight?
skorpan
lol, perforce
good one
irlchris
:)
no harm in trying :)
ersatzmaus
I have used it in the past.
what's your question?
irlchris
just wondering if you ever got emerge working with it
fledermaus
emerge?
fsbot
hmm, Emerge is (info "(emacs)Emerge")
fledermaus
hm
that was weird.
,emerge

fledermaus
I used the dsmit thing.
but I was basically in a team of one, so merging wasn't really on my radar
irlchris
fledermaus: thanks - will check out that dsmit link - ain't seen that before
fledermaus: half wish I was in a team of one sometimes

how would i start the emacs server from my .emacs, but only IFF there isn't already one running?
i.e. if i have >1 emacs instance running, (server-start) will supercede the one that is already running
which sucks
antoszka
pgrep emacs || emacs --daemon
or what
greboides
muhoo: i have such functionaliy here, though i dont remember where i got it from
muhoo
from elisp?
antoszka
Ah, from elisp.
Sorry, I'm not reading carefully.
offby1
I'm pretty sure someone wrote something like that already

skorpan
muhoo: Warning (server): Unable to start the Emacs server. There is an existing Emacs server, named "server".
muhoo: upgrade your emacs, 23.1 is out since long ago
muhoo
greboides: thank you
greboides
so i can delete it
quidnunc
muhoo: Like skorpan implied, this is fixed in 23
muhoo
thanks. but i am a debian user, which means, "long ago" is the norm for me :-)
skorpan
muhoo: you can still compile emacs yourself
muhoo
thanks
i will probably just work around it, unless i find a backport for 23 somewhere.
night all

what's the proper way to set the frame background color so that any new frames get the same color as the initial one?
i'm using set-background-color in ~/.emacs today which of course doesn't work

,dv default-frame-alist
fsbot
Alist of default values for frame creation.
These may be set in your init file, like this:
(setq default-frame-alist '((width . 80) (height . 55) (menu-bar-lines . 1)))
These override values given in window system configuration data,
including X Windows' defaults database. ..[Type ,more]
fledermaus

fsbot
For values specific to the first Emacs frame, see `initial-frame-alist'.
For window-system specific values, see `window-system-default-frame-alist'.
For values specific to the separate minibuffer frame, see
`minibuffer-frame-alist'. ..[Type ,more]
fledermaus
,more
fsbot
The `menu-bar-lines' element of the list controls whether new frames
have menu bars; `menu-bar-mode' works by altering this element.
Setting this variable does not affect existing frames, only new ones.
You can customize this variable.

is the function "do" the equivalent of a C do-while loop?
offby1

probably
,do
fsbot
offby1
,df do
fsbot
do is a Lisp macro in `cl-macs.el'.
(do ((VAR INIT [STEP])...) (END-TEST [RESULT...]) BODY...)
The Common Lisp `do' loop.
offby1
oh
I think it's like super-powered.
skorpan
what's with the ellipsis? i think it's a good question. :|
offby1
I never use it because I can never remember how it works.

what's the proper way to compare the result of read-key to C-g?
e1f
#7 is not a good idea. land line phoes work during disasters because they have battery backups
the cell towers fail due to volume of calls also
cell calls fail, rather
skorpan
nvm my question, it is apparently just an integer
fledermaus
read-key?
I don't have that function.
skorpan
read-key is a compiled Lisp function in `subr.el'.
fledermaus

maybe I should finish work.

skorpan
is there any function in emacs lisp which returns the last element of a list?
yonkelphone
Also the sabbath doesn't begin till tomm night
fledermaus
,df last
fsbot
last is a compiled Lisp function in `subr.el'.
(last LIST &optional N)
Return the last link of LIST. Its car is the last element.
If LIST is nil, return nil.
If N is non-nil, return the Nth-to-last link of LIST.
If N is bigger than the length of LIST, return LIST.
skorpan
thanks

yonkelphone
I heard this story of a couple of jewish soldiers in ww2 who got placed with a few fellas from kentucky who thought they were able to drink anything
Slivovitz was a little much for em
Can't blame em
offby1
skorpan: I generally just use "while"
,df while
fsbot
while is a special form in `C source code'.
(while TEST BODY...)
If TEST yields non-nil, eval BODY... and repeat.
The order of execution is thus TEST, BODY, TEST, BODY and so on
until TEST returns nil.
offby1
skorpan: very very simple, and all I (generally) need
skorpan
not always the "right" thing
