boscop
emacs throws an error "Invalid read syntax: )" for: (global-set-key (kbd "C-c C-h") 'toggle-highlight-word-at-point)
why? is this symbol too long?
Paczesiowa
how can I force a window to always take 1/3 of frame space (mostly buffers with interpreters)?
shabble
Paczesiowa: split-window-(horiz|vert) take a size argument
Paczesiowa
shabble: but I usually use mode-specific binding to show interpreter window, and if it's not already visible, it splits screen in half
shabble
Paczesiowa: I'm not sure what interpreter you mean, do you know what the function or binding is that triggers it?
Paczesiowa
shabble: I mean ghci for haskell-mode, ocaml for tuareg etc.
Han
Anybody else notice when you open a file and you hit the arrowkeys the first keystroke is something you didn't want?
shabble
hrmm, I don't use either of those modes so I can't check easily. What function does C-h k <binding to trigger interpreter> give you?
keramida
Yes, I've seen this happen in `emacs -nw' sessions

Han
keramida, that's all I use.
keramida
Han: e.g. in new TeX-mode buffers I often get a spurious {\bf } inserted if I start editing by pressing <down>
I think this is related to the way emacs initializes the terminal state, but that's a wild-ish guess
Han
yes, and that bug is pretty persistnat.
boscop
emacs throws an error "Invalid read syntax: )" for: (global-set-key (kbd "C-c C-h") 'toggle-highlight-word-at-point)
why?
it's in my .emacs
shabble
boscop: ,,tdoe
fsbot
hmm, tdoe is [0] type M-x toggle-debug-on-error RET, reproduce the problem, then lisppaste the contents of the backtrace buffer.
[1] NOTE: you dont *have* to lisppaste, just contemplating the backtrace will often give you enlightenment
boscop
shabble: http://pastie.org/private/ncagh7mgqcbdjhjaw0y8qq
hm
it's weird. if I execute that statement with C-x C-e it doesn't complain at all, only when loading
cluck
boscop: maybe something to with load order?
evanmeagher
anyone want a wave invite?
boscop
evanmeagher: no, toggle-highlight-word-at-point is defined before the call to global-set-key
and that wouldn't by syntactic!
MrTorque
why does (- (beginning-of-line) (end-of-line)) not work?
boscop
MrTorque: because that moves the point
doesn't give a position
ieure
MrTorque, line-beginning-position, line-end-position.
Gnu_Raiz
Anyone use nnmaildir I can't get my mailbox to work with gnus.
MrTorque
boscop: i thought that would be move-beginning-of-line.
ieure: thanks.
Gnu_Raiz
If you want details look in the emacs.help newsgroup. Gnus can't find my maildir and emacs wiki is very limited on the subject.
boscop
MrTorque: both
what else could be the reason?
http://pastie.org/private/uiaacqjsmvxdnsnoa4oa
the error occurs at the last line
o.O wtf now the exact same error seems to appear somewhere else in .emacs
on a totally unrelated line
legumbre
boscop: unbalanced parens?
boscop
legumbre: no
they are balanced
wouldn't it be a different error anyway with missing ")"?
ah I found the reason
a ) too much
I forgot too comment that out with a function last tim

kiba
hello
I accidently temporary binded C-p to a command

ieure
I have a method that sets my frame to the size and position I like it in. It works fine if I run it after Emacs has started up, but if it runs from .emacs, it goes to the wrong place. Whats up with that?
kiba
and I don't know how to get rid of the binding
ieure
kiba, (define-key (current-global-map) "\C-p" 'previous-line)
Hi, I am trying to load in .emacs the google go mode but I get this error : Symbol's value as variable is void: 'load-path I assume it is not finding the .el file but I don't know why
kiba
thanks
hmm
(Action) wonders how to copy emacs command
err
emacs minibuffer
boscop
uffiole
hi, pls how to use same colors as in konsole?
chpln
kiba
does anybody know how to copy a line from the minibuffer?
google isn't getting much of anything for me
kodein
like you do ordinarily.
kiba
never mind
kodein
oh, you want to access the *Messages* ?
C-x b *Messages* <ret>
chpln
SpinachHead: And the same for the double-quotes, of course.
with single apostrophe's I still get the same error. You mean 'load-path 'PATH .el' t) ?
boscop
kiba: click in it
then it will open in a buffer
then you can copy
only the folder
it is in
ieure
Hmm. I guess theres a bug; x-display-pixel-height / x-display-pixel-width return zero from .emacs, so I cant calculate the position correctly.
kiba
nvm
ieure
That really sucks.
still won't work. I guess the tutorial is wrong...
chpln
kiba
yo
how do I use a variable like this?
ericP
can't quit emacs -- seeing: require: Recursive load: "/usr/share/emacs/23.1.50/lisp/net/tramp.elc", "/usr/share/emacs/23.1.50/lisp/net/tramp-cmds.elc", "/usr/share/emacs/23.1.50/lisp/net/tramp.elc", "/usr/share/emacs/23.1.50/lisp/net/tramp-cmds.elc", "/usr/share/emacs/23.1.50/lisp/net/tramp.elc", "/usr/share/emacs/23.1.50/lisp/net/tramp-cmds.elc", "/usr/share/emacs/23.1.50/lisp/net/tramp.elc", "/usr/share/emacs/23.1.50/lisp/net/tramp-cmds.elc", "/usr/share/emacs

(defvar *pastie-last-url* ""
"The last url pasted.")
I am trying to get information from pastie-last-url
so I can paste the url on erc chat client
jimi_hendrix
slime question: its C-c C-c to tell slime to compile this buffer right
ryoma
why did google name it go? so that you are forced to say "google" in searches?
(Action) leaves aside the koan-like question of why invent another stupid language
s/stupid/redundant/g
I still can't get the go .el file to work
kodein
ryoma
eh, i am losing ability to care about all languages like that
kiba
yo
kodein
I only really care for erlang out of them
kiba
does anybody know how to retrive stuff from (devar *pastie-last-url* "" "The Last url pasted.")?
ryoma
c-h v
kiba
I am trying to write a function which allow me to paste a link from my last pastie
oh thank you
hmm
BrianRice-mb
quick question: what would be the simplest way to highlight a buffer at a given point for debugging purposes of elisp?
ericP
so, anyone got a theory on how i can quit my emacs despite a recursive load dependency between tramp and tramp-cmd?
BrianRice-mb
ow, that sounds unpleasant
shabble
kill -9? ;p
ryoma
is that because provide is after require
?
teedex
I want to push 3 lines of text to the right by 3 tabs, how can i do that, is there regular key binding
ieure
teedex, Mark the lines, C-3 C-x TAB
I dont know what your tab width is, but just pass the width you want as a prefix to C-x TAB
Or a negative argument to move the lines left.
ericP, Maybe you could (unload-feature 'tramp) ?
ericP
oh, cool. would have guessed C-x r t C-q TAV C-q TAV C-q TAV
ieure, oh, i wish i'd tried that
ieure
ericP, You can probably do it with the rectangle commands, too, but I dont know how those work offhand.
ericP
xkilled it, and fortunately, i got all my buffer context back
shabble
the CUA rectangle commands are really quite ncie
ericP
ieure, i learned the rect cmds. use them for everything now
ieure
Hm. Interesting that CUA saves the rect, but plain yank does not work. C-x r y does, as does cua-paste.
kiba
hello
Symbol's function definition is void
what does that mean?
it contains nothing?
it is for pastie-last-url
ieure
kiba, pastie-last-url is probably a variable, not a function.
kiba
then how do I get it?
ieure
Get what?
Oh, its value? It evaluates to it.
kiba
http://pastie.org/private/jhxycd8fbgta4no2s3aw8w
oh
ehehehehe
I should have read the pastie.el more carefully
uffiole

what is the deal with that thing where tramp-mode doesn't see a new directory? driving me crazy
any way to force tramp to re-read the contents of a directory, in order that it stop obstinately denying the existence of a subdirectory I just created?
restarting emacs has been tried, multiple times...

My PC is running little slow, what is the effect of degragment?
