fledermaus
you bound RET, not TAB, how are the two items related? Or am I missing smething?
boscop
fledermaus: oh sorry, I quoted the wrong line
rgr
kodein: people tend not to get it right for a reason if you're talking about cedet/ecb. They were a complet mess. Out of date docs and impossibly convoluted to get working. It#s hopefully improved a lot as cedet has the potential to be great - if it works,
kodein
I was talking about rss/blog publication dates
rgr
Still need a date since things change.
kodein
yes, there's an dateupdated thingy too
rgr
As someone that came to Linux quite late in life (!) I can assure you that tghe biggest hurdle by far was figuring out which Howto was uptodate and which were not.
(The reason I mention it is I just looked at JDEE again and ... forget it : no idea what is old and what is new from the manual/web page and of course the fabled install script fails).
ovnicraft
i am reading cedet doc, for projects but i see that conf is for C++, so i want to configure it with python dir, and menus for that i cant see them

I want that TAB expands when I press it but it completes when I press SHIFT at the same time. how do I do that?
s/completes/indents/

rgr
boscop : what completion mechanism are you using
boscop
rgr: the default, I guess that is dabbrev-expand
rgr
shift tab should not be tied to completion IMO since its a common "naviagte backwards" key.
C-h k S-tab
boscop
should I just bind TAB to dabbrev-expand and <backtab> to indent-according-to-mode ?
rgr
why not use hippie-expand?
boscop
what's the difference?
rgr
hippie includes many potential completion mechanisms
C-h f hippie-expand
boscop
dabbrev only considers abbrevs?
rgr
abbrevs? nop.
"abbrevs" is a total misnomer IMO.
,df dabbrev-expand
fsbot
dabbrev-expand is an interactive compiled Lisp function in
`dabbrev.el'.
It is bound to M-/.

rudybot: seen keramida
rudybot
fledermaus: keramida was seen joining in/on :#emacs two days ago, and then keramida was seen quitting in/on ppp-94-64-242-88.home.otenet.gr one day ago, saying "Read error: 60 (Operation timed out)"
boscop
that's what I've been using
worked pretty well
rgr
FWIW, I settled on using compan-mode and tied TAB to complete. You can see the (simple) set up here : http://richardriley.net/projects/emacs/dotprogramming#sec-1.1
boscop
hm
Eraldo
.I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and there is already an emacs version ...however I was wondering if the snapshot version would be better
well... "better" is hard to tell because it depends
but I thought of maybe having limitations when using the newest git org-mode version
boscop
how can I cause backspace to delete-horizontal-space if there is no non-whitespace char between beginning-of-line and point + delete the previous newline? else it should just delete one char.
rgr
hungry-delete or something
boscop
rgr: hungry-delete deletes all whitespace backwards
I only want one line
how do I test whether there are no non-whitespace chars between beginning of line and point in elisp?
rgr
Cant help I'm afraid. I normally look at whats there these days as opposed to what I want - its amazing how often I realise that the concensus which built an emacs feature has outthought my own needs :)

boscop
I guess someone thought about this earlier but it's difficult to find exactly this
dim
boscop: M-b M-f should get you back to point I'd say
ol3
hello is there a predicate to test for `.' and `..' files?
boscop
dim: that doesn't answer my question :/
dim
With zero argument, kills the text before point on the current line.
It is bound to C-k, <deleteline>.
boscop: better this way?
C-0 C-k
but you have to care about whitespaces yourself
boscop
dim: then I could just call delete-horizontal-space on my own
I want it to take care of that
dim
oh yes, didn't know about that one
boscop
dim: it's bound to M-\

In Python mode I'm not getting the highlighting of matching parentheses behavior... anyone have a clue as to why?
jlf
laurus: have a look at ,,dv show-paren-mode
fsbot
Non-nil if Show-Paren mode is enabled.
See the command `show-paren-mode' for a description of this minor mode.
Setting this variable directly does not take effect;
either customize it (see the info node `Easy Customization')
or call the function `show-paren-mode'.
You can customize this variable. ..[Type ,more]
laurus
jlf, it seems to be related to my font
If I do the customize-apropos-faces and set my own font, restart Emacs, the show-paren-mode doesn't work even when enabled...
It added a line:
'(show-paren-match ((((class color) (background light)) (:background "azure2")))))
So maybe the background just isn't working or something?
jlf
see also ,,dv show-paren-stylre
fsbot
not documented as a variable.
jlf
see also ,,dv show-paren-style
fsbot
Style used when showing a matching paren.
Valid styles are `parenthesis' (meaning show the matching paren),
`expression' (meaning show the entire expression enclosed by the paren) and
`mixed' (meaning show the matching paren if it is visible, and the expression
otherwise). ..[Type ,more]
laurus
No, it still doesn't work even if I (setq show-paren-style 'parenthesis) in my .emacs file
jlf
try setq-default or use the customization interface
laurus
jlf, it's a Microsoft font, maybe that's thep roblem.
It doesn't show up in xfontsel
(I'm on GNU/Linux)

I wasn't specifying the name properly

Anyone use firefox with gtk emacs mode enabled know how to reliably close tabs? C-w only works occasionally. Maybe know of a keymap listing?
fledermaus
M-w
crowbar
no dice
jlf
crowbar: C-F4? (try at your own risk)
crowbar
hah, thanks jlf. that works. not exactly the most convenient.
rgr
anyone here have a nerer version of babel.el to copy with the new html layout of google translation services?
jlf
there might be some addon that maps it to something saner
crowbar
was trying to avoid an explicit addon and rely on gtk's emacs setting, but i'll take a look
jlf
maybe even some about:config voodoo
rgr
C-w certainly always works without those enabled.
boscop_
when I am in the minibuffer, it doesn't complete as usual anymore
neither with hippie-expand, nor dabbrev-expand
it doesn't find the elisp functions
I just did: (global-set-key (kbd "<tab>") 'dabbrev-expand)
but in the minibuffer it should normally complete
^0
How do I dump current emacs behaviour configurations into a file?
jlf
boscop_: TAB is normally bound to minibuffer-complete in the minibuffer
boscop_
jlf: how do I have to set it so that it doesn't affect the minibuffer-TAB?
jlf
don't use global-set-key
nopedia
^0: custom themes?
boscop_
jlf: what else?
it should work in all modes
jlf
boscop_: using local-set-key in a mode hook is a common idiom
boscop_
but I would have to do that for every mode I use
jlf
what is tab bound to by default in all of these modes?
hellyeah

Hey there. I've recently installed emacs 23.1.1 with haskell-mode, but it seems that that the menu at the top that appears for .hs files is 'empty'. I assume that is a bug.
Anyone have an idea of what might be wrong?
^0
I understand that I barely can dump loaded files, but saving fonts and colors configuration may be possible, doesn't it?
boscop_
IceDane: I have the same bug for YASnippet, AUCTex and other custom menus
jlf
boscop_: when you do C-h c TAB in a window that's what it says?
IceDane
boscop_: Did you ever try to fix it - if so, get anywhere?
To be honest, I don't know what functionality i'm missing, heh. It's never worked
But I don't want to miss out on something that could potentially be awesome!
hellyeah
hey
boscop_
IceDane: no. and now I'm working without menu bar
hellyeah
i have no .emacs file
in my home directory
IceDane
Alright, thanks
boscop_
IceDane: everything in the menu is also available with M-x
jlf: <tab> runs the command dabbrev-expand
because I set it in .emacs

i compiled matlab.el with command
emacs -q --no-site-file -batch \

-f batch-byte-compile $*.el
now i ask i open my .m file with emacs
it all sets
to work with matlab in emacs i installed emacs-goodies

In tabbar mode, is there a way to change the order of the tabs?
hellyeah
not it all set
JordiGH
Other than closing and opening buffers. :-/

I'm using emacs-w3m for HTML mail in Gnus. How can I make it so left click on link opens it in external browser? Now left clicking on link does nothing, but I can open it in external browser using right click menu.
