crowbar: for some reason I have a hook for deleting my address from CC in wl-draft-config-alist.
O, I see, I wanted to exclude using a regular expression.
lisppaste
bremner pasted "crowbar: FWIW" at http://paste.lisp.org/display/90526
sword
bremner: O-o
bremner
yeah, I know, what a mess
don't ask wth I was thinking re-writing a filter function.

johnw
Nexuin?
Nexuiz?

is it multi-player

what was the one with spiders
DuClare
Tremulous?
fsbot
Tremulous is a GPL sci-fi game built upon the GPLed Quake 3 engine that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS .. + other entries
DuClare
Oh. Q3 :<
Alien Arena?
Actually, I don't know if AA has spiders. I never played it.
ggole
Warsaw? That doesn't have spiders, but it's q2 engine
DuClare
It's Warsow
ggole
I always get that wrong
e1f
yeah that's the one
DuClare
Which one?
e1f
tremulous
dto
e1f: hi
e1f
hi dto
dto
we are talking about games eh? :)
DuClare
Emacs needs a new 3D fps..
e1f
there were some students here wanting to install starcraft on the uni network
who said that it was opensourced
we didn't believe them
so we wantd to suggest alternatives
dto
e1f: my old elisp engine got ported to cl and evolved into http://youtube.com/dto1138

FFighter
hi
is there any way to put a breakpoint in an elisp func so it will hang and call edebug when called
?
shabble
,,df debug-on-entry
fsbot
debug-on-entry is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `debug.el'.
(debug-on-entry FUNCTION)
Request FUNCTION to invoke debugger each time it is called.
When called interactively, prompt for FUNCTION in the minibuffer.
This works by modifying the definition of FUNCTION. If you tell the ..[Type ,more]
shabble
actually, debug isn't quite the same as edebug.
FFighter
thanks. what is the difference?
shabble
iirc edebug is more featureful, but you have to 'instrument' the functions first
johnw
edebug is awesome
shabble
whereas the debug-* functions will drop you into a backtrace buffer you can step through/over, but less configurablility?
FFighter
\and functions that are called from a hook, how can I debug them?
this one is added to a hook
and while it is being called, the debugger doesn't work :S
ggole
Just instrument it
Put point in the function definition, and C-u C-M-x
oxi
Is it possible to toggle the display of the lower "status bar"?
edw
Is there a preferred way of determining if emacs is running in a terminal vs. in X11 or another window system? I'd like to disable tabbar if I'm running emacs in a terminal.
skorpan
oxi: (setq mode-line-format nil)
not that i see *why* you would want that
oxi
"U:-- foo.tex 3% (44,3) (PDFLaTeX/F Ref BCite Spc Fill) <- that one
skorpan: thanks!
skorpan
that's the mode line btw, for future reference
oxi
skorpan: use every pixel of my screen :-)
skorpan
that's silly ;P
oxi
yeah, I agree
on the other hand I often really don't need that lower bar
ggole
edw: see the variable window-system
oxi
skorpan: how do I re-enable it?
skorpan: (setq mode-line-format 1) ?
skorpan
no
i don't know to be honest
since it is really used for setting a format string to use in the mode line, it could potentially be tricky
oxi
skorpan: hah, great :-)
skorpan
,modeline
fsbot
ModeLine -- [0] at http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ModeLine
[1] (info "(emacs)Mode Line")
oxi
umm, then I guess I'm stuck
skorpan
i still don't understand how you can not find the mode line useful
i'd be lost without it
it shows me the buffer name, the encoding, the buffer position, the line, the column, etc.
oxi
I find it usefull, but I'd like to display it when I really use it
edw
oxi, turn on line number mode and you'll want to dispense with it even less.
skorpan
line-number-mode is turned on by default i think
edw
Ah. I've been using Emacs too long.
skorpan
column-number-mode is not though
which is silly
obviously it should be
edw
Everything should be turned on.
skorpan
in soviet russia emacs turns YOU on
oh wait what..

oxi
:( ... how do I get the status bar back after doing M-: (setq mode-line-format nil) ?
skorpan
i don't think you can
oxi
gah
skorpan
i mean you could write a function which saves the previous value of mode-line-format and restores it when you want it
edw
Dude, (setq saved-mode-line-format mode-line-format)?
skorpan
jinx edw
edw
And then the reverse to restore it?
skorpan
yes
Titan8990
I just came on here to get help with unusual emacs problems... went to look to explain the problem better and it works now.. fail
edw
The question marks are there for politeness sake...
jlf
Titan8990: glad we could help
oxi
edw: I guess it's too late for me
edw
So anyway, how do I know if Emacs is running in X11 so I can do some conditional configuration in .emacs?
DuClare
window-system
edw
Thank you.
skorpan
oxi: just get used to the mode line, i don't see how you can be bothered by it
oxi: it is *very* useful to know what file you are editing
oxi
ok
DuClare
It's also very useful to see the weather, because windows are always blocked by curtains
oxi
I killed the process, now it's back, ... huh
skorpan
M-: only evaluates a lisp expression
it changes the current session only
to change it "permanently" you have to put the expression in ~/.emacs
edw
Seriously, live with the mode line. My terminal window is 80 x 55. What is one extra line going to do for you? How small is your monitor? I could see if you're on a 40x24 Apple II...
sword
I don't see why you couldn't have a dedicated "mode line window"
similar to the dedicated minibuf window
skorpan
there is not one mode line
there is one minibuffer per frame i believe
sword
There is only one active mode line per frame however
skorpan
well sure, but what does that help?
edw
Ah, much better... Now I guess it's time to turn off color...
rgr
well, its not outside the realms of possibility to enable soemthing like an OSD message on a hot key rather than force it on someone. Not that I would like it : I keep an eye on the modeline for erc updates :-;
skorpan
i still want to be able to see what buffers my other windows are displaying without having to switch to them
sword
skorpan: Not sure, but Emacs does everything else, why not this?
skorpan: For the record I like my modeline too
skorpan
sword: it's possible but hasn't been done yet afaik so i suppose it's just not that popular of an idea
sword
Well, vi isn't popular either here but it exists :)
skorpan
who do you suggest implement this feature that you speaketh of? :P
if someone really wanted it, they'd write it
sword
oxi of course
skorpan
hehe
that would be a nice exercise
rgr
as for seeing buffers C-x C-b view then q ...
oxi
edw: awesome, M-: (setq saved-mode-line-format mode-line-format) | M-: (setq mode-line-format nil) | M-: (setq mode-line-format saved-mode-line-format) worked fine! thanks!
skorpan
just throw out a few hooks and then you're done
am i the only one with an obsession of constantly switching windows for no reason at all?
sword
Maybe you'll catch a fish
Titan8990
what variable/option decides the default dir when i do C-x C-f?
skorpan
i can't seem to stop hitting C-x o when i'm not typing
sword
C-x o *twitch*
Titan8990: current-directory
skorpan
Titan8990: the "current directory" of the buffer
sword: that's not a variable is it?
Titan8990: to change it interactively do M-x cd
sword
Err, dammit, default-directory
Titan8990
I want to change it permanently, I was reading about default-directory but it didn't sound right
sword
varfail
skorpan
Titan8990: (setq default-directory "/etc") should work i think?
sword
Titan8990: (setq-default default-directory "~")
skorpan: buffer-local
skorpan
sword: what if i set it outside of a buffer?
sword
skorpan: then it's not local, huh?
skorpan
hm, can i even do that?
sword
skorpan: maybe you're in a black hole :)
oxi
How do I toggle the Line after the modeline that sometimes shows "End of buffer"?
sword
oxi: that's the echo-area or minibuffer
skorpan
hehe, you don't want the minibuffer now?
sword
that's doable, actually.
skorpan
that's what she said
oxi
argh, please repaste if anyone wrote
skorpan
00:20 <sword> oxi: that's the echo-area or minibuffer
00:21 <sword> that's doable, actually.
sword
oxi: that's the echo-area or minibuffer
oxi
thanks!
skorpan: how can I toggle it?
skorpan
i don't know
oxi
ok
how do I remove the scrollbar on the right? :-)
skorpan
scroll-bar-mode
shabble
(scroll-bar-mode -1)
oxi
perfect! mucho gracias!
sword
oxi: why don't you just look at ,,darkroom
fsbot
sword, darkroom is [0] http://www.martyn.se/code/emacs/darkroom-mode/
[1] http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/WriteRoom
sword
oxi: I think it's a "maximize everything" mode
oxi
sword: I didn't know about it :-)
sword
oxi: you should ask fsbot or emacswiki search
fsbot: maximize
fsbot
hmm, maxframe is [0] located at http://www.emacsblog.org/2007/02/22/maximize-on-startup-part-2/
[1] maximize emacs frames from elisp,
[2] alternatively you can get it from here: http://github.com/rmm5t/maxframe-el/tree/master
sword
,minibuffer
fsbot
I heard Minibuffer is [0] (info "(emacs)Minibuffer")
[1] at http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?MiniBuffer,
[2] You can switch from the minibuffer to another buffer with c-x o, and edit or even yank some text, and then c-x o to go back to the minibuffer
Titan8990
skorpan, sword, I have (setq-default default-directory "~/prog/") and it defaults to ~/ where before it defaulted to ~/Documents/
oxi
ah, darkroom seems MS Windows only
sword
oxi: eh, there's a workalike somewhere
oxi: i've never used it
Titan8990: note that setq-default only works when the current buffer has no value
Titan8990: Try C-h v default-directory
Titan8990: Every buffer will have its own "pwd"
Titan8990: Well, almost every buffer
Titan8990
sword, I am restarting emacs each time I make the change
sword
Titan8990: Also investigate HOME and PWD
