is it possible to enter a full-fullscreen on Aquamacs?
cmd-shift-return still shows the upper menu bar
SiggyF
you have mac-hide-menu-bar
oxi
SiggyF: awesome!!!
SiggyF: ... and how about the "Open, Save, ..." bar?
Andorka
menu-bar-mode

Hi! I recently upgraded to Karmic, and now when I start emacs-snapshot, all the letters are screwy--they look like a barcode or a bunch of rectangles. emacs in terminal works fine--I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction?

sorry

consolers: ha =) OK; thanks!

no its just as useless
k-man
anyone here find that the in ear canal earphones tend to sort of "boom" in your ears as you walk? like you have water in your ears? or is that just me?
e1f
i have used them for a few years now, never noticed it
oxi
is there a command to resize the windows?
wolfslack
k-man: Il answer your question if you tell me weather or not it is suitable to call a cow with wings a "cowing machine".
e1f
try a different fitting
mosburn
arsenick: change your font face and you should be good
e1f
actually i find that if i put a bit of water on the fitting i get a better seal in the headphone
k-man
wolfslack: err... no, cowing machine sounds as though its a machine to do cowing
e1f: they are fairly cheap canal phones, i'm going to try the apple ones soon (ordered already, waiting for deliver)

dotemacs
hi
im trying to add two binary numbers
whats the best way to do that
in a function
skorpan
convert to decimal, add, convert to binary

dotemacs
ok, what about if i were to do an 'and' on them
armadillo
it's ironic that numbers arithmetic is done in binary by the processor...
legumbre_
an 'and'?
skorpan
binary and?
uhm, well, bitwise and*
dotemacs
yea 101 and 001 = 001
skorpan
dotemacs: what's your current representation of the binary numbers?
dotemacs
as in, are they strings ?
skorpan
you tell me
dotemacs
well, it don't matter, but lets say that they are strings
skorpan
i wouldn't be so sure it doesn't matter, but okay
dotemacs
well, im just after an example
skorpan
i don't know the best solution off-hand so i'll be quiet
dotemacs
hence "it doesnt matter", but i know that it matters
ok, how about this
how can i use some of calc's functions to do a binary and in a function
but not use it interactively
or calculator's
oxi
is there a nice summary that shows what emacs can be used for?
skorpan
oxi: just about anything to be honest
k-man
what is the difference between an rss feed and an atom feed?
skorpan
k-man: atom is an rss format
oxi
can it be used: ... as browser? ... as ftp client? ... as application launcher? ... as ssh client? ...
skorpan
oxi: all of those with ease, yes
oxi
... as irc client?
skorpan
i'm using irc from emacs as we speak
oxi
skorpan: very cool! ... but does it make sense?
e1f
read emacswiki.org
oxi
skorpan: awesome, I need to try that
e1f: thansk
k-man
skorpan: is one format better than the other? which should I choose when subscribing to a feed?
skorpan
oxi: i don't use it as a browser, ftp client, app launcher or ssh client, as i have other programs that i'm used to for that
oxi
ok
skorpan
k-man: i'll have to suggest some wikipedia article for an answer on that one
oxi
skorpan: can you summarize what you use emacs for?
skorpan
oxi: coding (of course), irc, writing documents, TODO lists, ...
dotemacs
oxi: how about - for creating beautiful things :)
oxi
I'm using it for TeX/LaTeX now and I'm planning on using it for Java, MS/Mono C#, irc
cool
skorpan
oxi: it has lousy C# support to be honest, i wish i could use it for that
oxi
ok, then I'll stay with VS2008/10
skorpan
are you using auctex for your latex editing?
oxi
skorpan: yes
skorpan
good
oxi: oh, and i use emacs for version control as well
and diffing files
k-man
skorpan: ok, thanks
oxi
So it seems like Eclipse/Netbeans do a better job in java integration and VS does a better job in C# integration
boscop
emms-lastfm <3
skorpan
well eclipse does have this weird compile-and-no-need-to-restart-the-app for java
oxi
skorpan: cvs, svn, hg, git, other?
skorpan
oxi: at the moment mostly hg and git
oxi
exactly
boscop
skorpan: which hg mode do you use?
oxi
yeah, I was looking into using hg with emacs
skorpan
boscop: i can't recall, i only use it at work and i'm at home right now
boscop: the binding for pulling is "C-c h <" if that tells you anything
anyone else want to tell oxi what they use emacs for? i feel like i'm not really selling emacs here
,salespitch
fsbot
We aren't gonna lie. Emacs sucks. Some of us tolerate it, but we can't tell you if YOU'LL be able to. Try it and make up your own mind.
boscop
not really. I wan to use hg in emacs but there are many different modes
oxi
hehe
boscop
so I wasn't shure which to take
I'm using emacs for writing code and doing cmdline work and chatting
oxi
boscop: let me know if you find a nice mode
boscop
and now trying to get emms to work
oxi: ok
skorpan
i used to blog from emacs but lost my setup
karlw
Is it possible to use yasnippet recursively?
skorpan
and i edit wikipedia using emacs
oxi
nice
boscop
skorpan: how so?
oxi
I guess I'll stay with Eclipse/VS for OOP dev
skorpan
boscop: i use some mozilla plugin to open the edit field from firefox in emacs, then ,,wikipedia-mode
fsbot
From memory, wikipedia-mode is at http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/wikipedia-mode.el
boscop
ah
karlw
Like if I wanted to type \[f \left( \begin{pmatrix} x\\ y\\ z \end{pmatrix} \right)\]
using both a parenthesis snippet and a matrix snippet.
oxi
Is it possible to change the windows size by command?
Dabian
How do I avoid rebooting Emacs, and still get access to all the new cool stuff I installed?
dotemacs
Dabian, eval it C-x C-e
Dabian
dotemacs: But where do I find it?
dotemacs: in the site-lisp thing, or?
ashawley
oxi: ,,dk C-x ^
fsbot
enlarge-window is an interactive built-in function in `C source code'.
It is bound to C-x ^.
(enlarge-window SIZE &optional HORIZONTAL)
Make selected window SIZE lines taller.
Interactively, if no argument is given, make the selected window one ..[Type ,more]
oxi
shawley: dk?
dotemacs
Dabian: where did you put your newly installed files?
ashawley
oxi: "It is bound to C-x ^."
Dabian
dotemacs: No idea,I used the package manager
oxi
ashawley: ah, I see, thanks - I didn't notice the fsbot
Dabian
dotemacs: apt-get
dotemacs
what package manager?
Dabian
dotemacs: apt-get / dpkg
dotemacs
well can't your package manager list the installed packages
Dabian
dotemacs: I guess they're in /var/lib/dpkg/info/*.list ..
dotemacs
how about dpkg -L <your-package>
Dabian
dotemacs: but if some files are changed, its going to be hard to guess which ones. :/
dotemacs: Thta gives the same. :)
dotemacs: as cat /var/lib/dpkg/info/<your-package>.list
dotemacs
well, i would go into the file which you've just installed, this is assuming that its .el file, and do M-x eval-buffer
Dabian
(In most cases, at least)
Cool
consolers
oxi (set-frame-width (selected-frame) 80)
M-:
oxi
consolers: I tried something like that, but failed
consolers: set-frame-width doesn't show up for me in "Possible completions" when tabbing in M-x
consolers
not M-x
M-: or M-x eval-expression
then yank the whole lisp form
oxi
thanks
consolers
or put cursor at end of the lisp form form and M-x eval-last-sexp
oxi
How do I get into M-? :-)
consolers
M-: puts you into the minibuffer prompt
if you move outside the minibuffer you can use C-x o to get back to the minibuffer window
twb
"The execstack package contains a utility which modifies (or adds) the GNU_STACK program header to ELF binaries, and allows changing the executable flag."
What does that actually *mean*?
oxi
colsoers: yes, but how do I do "M-"? ... I know how to enter the "M-x" console, but not the "M-" console.
*consolers
bob2
alt, usually
but no one said "M-"
skorpan
oxi: M-: as in hold meta and hit colon
oxi
bob2: "consolers: M-: or M-x eval-expression"
twb
M- alone has no meaning
oxi
ok
twb
M-: means meta+colon, or meta+shift+semicolon on a US 104 keyboard.
If you really needed to type "M-", the closest would be ESC
oxi
ah, now it worked
twb
Since M-x is ESC x, which Meta+x translates to
oxi
I forgot the shift
thanks a lot
and what's C-x ^.?
bob2
what does it look like?
(bearing the above conversation in mind)
oxi
ashawley: oxi: ,,dk C-x ^
twb
fsbot: tell oxi about tutorial
fsbot
oxi: I heard tutorial is [0] required reading to receive support here. To start it run "emacs -e help-with-tutorial" or type C-h t
[1] will appear in your language if a translation is available and your locale is set correctly (see "man locales")

bob2
oxi: no
oxi: C = control
oxi
oops
twb
oxi: please take the Emacs tutorial
bob2
C-x C-x = hold control, hit x, release x, hit x
C-x x = hold control, hit x, release control, release x, hit x
oxi
exactly, I just didn't notice the C :-)
coldhead
does anyone know of a smallish linux distro that would be suitable to run in a virtual machine which still has emacs and a window manager?
bob2
debian
skorpan
arch
oxi
coldhead: emdebian
Andor

Andorka
oops
bremner
coldhead: any non-idiotic distro should let you start with a minimal base and install what you want. I only know debian though, so my definition of non-idiotic might be biased
