if anyone is interested, I was able to get the conky EPEL maintainer to fix the bug in the spec file, so it should be in epel-testing soon
(not sure if there are any conky users here)
GlenK
hmm, yum is failing on me saying it can't resolve hostnames. I can resolve them just fine with nslookup though. any ideas what's going on?
Zathrus
yum clean all -- and nslookup isn't a good tool here; try curl directly
GlenK
nah, I have some wierdness going on with lookups. git clone was failing before this too
yeah, curl can't resolve stuff either
Evolution
proxy in the way?
wolfy
broken dns
GlenK
no proxy
wolfy
proxy gets involved AFTER dns resolution
Zathrus
ahem... /etc/hosts
nslookup works, curl doesn't. There's relatively few things different there, but name resolution order is one.

GlenK
dns lookups are udp, no? wonder if they're just getting lost because there's so much traffic hitting this thing?
wolfy
usually DNS but not always
but they should not just "get lost"
unless there is a maze and no directions
Zathrus
they could certainly be dropped... thus is the nature of UDP. But it shouldn't be all the time.
Bahhumbug
GlenK: Mostly UDP, not always.
And a lot of equipment in this day and age still has issues with large reply packes (EDNS0)
Zathrus
iirc, tcp is only large replies though (incl zone transfers), no?
Bahhumbug
In theory all dns can be tcp.
Nahual
Anything over 512 byte if I recall.
GlenK
40000 kbps seem like a lot? RX dropped says 7978337, but that doesn't seem so bad compared to the ammount of packets
Bahhumbug
I seem to recall m$ screwing up a few years ago with that.
Nahual: I'm not sure of the cut-off off the top of my head.
But it's close to that, yeah.
Zathrus
GlenK: 40 Mbit isn't all that much nowadays
Nahual: believe so, but that's way above the response size for any individual DNS lookup... which is what curl should be doing
phy1729
Is there a way to get firefox -CreateProfile default to work from an rpm post script? Currently it errors with Error: cannot open display :0
Zathrus
pretty sure that opens a dialog box, so no.
Bahhumbug
Zathrus: I would tend to agree with that statement. A simple A/AAAA lookup, sans zone keys, would trivially fit in a single standard udp packet.
phy1729
Zathrus: it doesn't
seems to just make $HOME/.mozilla/firefox/<something>.default/prefs.js
wolfy
if RX dropped says 7978337 , you have larger issues than DNS, I say
phy1729
but I can't predict what the something will be
GlenK
well hell, turned off most of the traffic, shut off all the stuff using up cpu time. yum and curl still aren't resolving hostnames
switched to using 8.8.8.8 as a server too.
jaelae
had a weird call
had to get someone connected to a new rhel server - screenshared my computer
but they wanted me to launch XWindows
:|
Bahhumbug
Ok. We care about this here.... why?
jaelae
ha sorry centos server - but they wanted to launch xwindows from an ssh connection using putty

Zathrus
which you can do. As long as you have an xserver running.
jaelae
hmm it actually will work?
i never thought to try
Zathrus
enable x forwarding in putty and it will.
GlenK
hmm, I shut off docker and now the docker network interface isn't up. And dns lookups work. What might docker be doing that's getting in the way of dns lookups?
Bahhumbug
GlenK: .*
GlenK
ha
Bahhumbug
Sorry, I think docker and similar are immature junk "solutions".
jaelae
whats better than docker in that case?
Zathrus
just ignore Bahhumbug... he's being humbug-y.
also, get off his lawn.
jaelae
mom told him no xbox for a week I guess
Bahhumbug
He can stay on the lawn. The lions will take care of it for me.
jaelae
our centos servers are being blamed why an application is not running correctly since we did not use a "business distro"
great to fight
Bahhumbug
...
Yeah, not a "business distro".
Jesus...
jaelae
the OS kept locking up - details on why were scarse
built additional centos servers - same issue
anyway we figured it out today. the storage team had configured the SAN incorrectly
Bahhumbug
Imaginey that.
jaelae
it's the whole - when the issue moves up the ranks they see CentOS. Oh why? that has to be the issue
Zathrus
there's an exceptionally slim chance that it would run on RHEL and not CentOS. But that really is exceptionally slim, as much as my bretheren would like otherwise.
Bahhumbug
...
Sigh...
(Action) &
oniMaker
I'm getting a permission denied error when trying to sudo chgrp on certain files
file looks like: -rw-r--r--. vagrant vagrant system_u:object_r:fusefs_t:s0 /var/www/blah/blah/my/file
changing group of that file: "Operation not permitted"
What's the deal?
DiscordianUK
SELinux labelling I suspect
oniMaker
DiscordianUK: how can I check that?
when I try lsattr I get "Function not implemented While reading flags on file"
Khaytsus
fusefs? What's the real filesystem?
oniMaker
that directory is mounted in a vagrant vm with nfs and then bindfs adds it to the /var/www path
the main filesystem is xfs I think
DiscordianUK
auditctl -m avc -ts recent onimaker
oniMaker
DiscordianUK: The -m option must be only the only option and takes 1 parameter
DiscordianUK
Hmm yes I forgotten the exact command
oniMaker
so it's due to how the directory is mounted?
selinux is in Permissive mode
so it shouldn't be affecting anything, right?
In the NFS mount point I'm seeing entries like:
-rw-r--r--. 1 503 games 5630 Aug 5 18:15 composer.json
Bahhumbug
oniMaker: I will be blunt. There are few in this venue that understand and use the technology enough to be able to offer assistance.
oniMaker
Bahhumbug: That is frequently the case.
Bahhumbug
There is a #vagrant channel here on freenode with 434 people in it; perhaps they can assist?
oniMaker
why is that being mounted under the games user? with a strange group id?
Bahhumbug
Or at least point you to a source that can help?
oniMaker
I'll check there, but it seems like a filesystem issue between nfs/bindfs
Zathrus
what's the original uid/gid? Is there mapping in effect?
oniMaker
Zathrus: on the host box?
Zathrus
on wherever that filesystem is natively.
oniMaker
Zathrus: it's on osx natively, as myuser:staff
Zathrus
and what is the uid/gid for those?
oniMaker
503 and 20
