meandrain: well, I don't have any errors on md. I can mount and rebuild the array from the rescue env without problems. I just can't get grub to boot the root from an md device
meandrain
try your setup in virtualbox to see if your problem is because of a hardware incompatibility (if same setup works in virtualbox). Just out of curiosity is it the version from 6.6 ISO CD?
or is latest 6.6: ...23.4
blackflow
meandrain: 7
and yes, I'm testing this under kvm before I deploy on the server. I'm trying to switch from a single disk installation to a raid one. Did that many times with Debian and FreeBSD, this is the first time I need to touch dracut, and bah.
meandrain
my error was weird. Booted ok, then tried to mout /home, return md error. I've recreated md, it looked ok, reported no errors. Rebooted, then ... md error. Swithing back to 2.6.32-504.el6.x86_64 fixed the problem
so a system with soft raid works ok with 2.6.32-504.el6.x86_6, will return md errors with vmlinuz-2.6.32-504.23.4
blackflow
meandrain: this is CentOS 7
meandrain
are there other types of soft raid (other than md thing)?
blackflow
there's that dmraid fakeraid but I'm not using that
meandrain
this is kind of bad advice but you could try 6.6
blackflow
meandrain: naah, it's 7 I need to set up. If I can't, CentOS is of no use to me.

meandrain
I don't know much about this but did you add the modules? like this: dracut --mdadmconf --fstab --add="dm dmraid mdraid" --add-drivers="raid0 raid1" --force /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r) -M
also grub must load some modules: GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES="part_gpt raid mdraid raid5rec raid6rec dm_nv mdraid09 mdraid1x xfs"
blackflow
yes, not those, but I added mdraid module, and raid1 raid10 drivers. Thing is I can recreate and mount the array once the boot process falls into dracut shell, so all the tools ARE THERE. I just don't get it why there's no /dev/disk/by-uuid/... of the root md device
realistowl
Hi, all i wonder if anyone can help with an issue i am currently encountering with NFS
blackflow
meandrain: it does, part_gpt and mdraid1x
meandrain: the bootloader can find the kernel, and it can see and load the kernel from the very same partition on which /root (and thus /boot) are.
realistowl
I am currently working on setting up nfs with kerberos, however when i try to enable to the nfs-secure-server.service
i get a message stating Failed to issue method call: No such file or directory
i can see the relevant file is there when performing a systemctl list-unit-files
kichuku
Hello. Does anyone here use keepass with Centos 7? Or do you use any other password manageer?
Other than lastpass
DiscordianUK
keepassX
Though I'm moving away from it as it doesn't support yubikeys/U2F
kichuku
DiscordianUK: Does it provide easy login when using browser? And is it using keepass in its background?
DiscordianUK: Does it support any other 2 factor auth?
TrevorH
yum info keepassx
DiscordianUK
I'm looking for a decent solution that does 2FA
TrevorH
there's a libyubikey but I suspect that's too low level
DiscordianUK
if it's like Fedora there are yubikey* packages
In many ways OAUTH is the way to go
TrevorH
yubikey-personalization-gui.x86_64
that's all that appears on list yubi\*
DiscordianUK
Which most of the yubikeys support
kichuku
DiscordianUK: I am curious. Why do you choose to use yubikey. What if you lose the hardware token?
DiscordianUK
Well quite
But with standard passwords , what if you forget them?
kichuku
I will choose to use software based 2FA like Authy instead of yubikey
Atleast there is no single point of failure
DiscordianUK
A fair enough point
kichuku
Currently I use lastpass with Authy. Now I want to move to keepass
DiscordianUK
I'm not claiming my solution is the right one

kichuku
I am not saying you are wrong too. I just wanted to know the viewpoint of the person who uses a hardware token.
DiscordianUK
I must say I used RSA fobs at one place I worked
OneM_Industries
So, is there an easy way to find out how many hard drives with what capacity are in a centos 6.6 system?
DiscordianUK
They are perhaps better
kichuku
Yes, we too use PKI cards and RSA fobs in our workplace.
DiscordianUK
But need infrastructure
I'm just a hobbyist these days
TrevorH
OneM_Industries: post-install or during the install?
OneM_Industries
Post install.
I have the command line in front of me, but no idea how to find out if the new disk that I put in is being seen.
DiscordianUK
fdisk -l?
OneM_Industries
Odd.
It shows /dev/sda and /dev/sdb, but they have exactly the same stats...
The thing is, I have two different HDDs in the machine..
DiscordianUK
that is a little odd
Different UUIDs?
OneM_Industries
Odd, I don't see the UUIDs in the output.
DiscordianUK
blkid
OneM_Industries
blkid: http://pastebin.com/YG17F1Q3
fdisk -l: http://pastebin.com/Cw1MXGaF
Looks like two different disks, oddly enough.
DiscordianUK
The fdisk -l entries for sda and sdb look very different
OneM_Industries
Hm.
It was capacity that I was worried about.
As one disk was 70GB, and one was 80GB, according to the specs.
DiscordianUK
Both look like 80Gb according to fdisk
OneM_Industries
Odd.
DiscordianUK
dmidecode will show what the hardware is seen as by the BiOS
OneM_Industries
Heh. On top of the machine is a sign of the state of the hardware. "Cooling fan failure: plug in PS2 keyboard and hit F12 to boot."
DiscordianUK
Maybe you should address that first
OneM_Industries
Oddly enough, all the fans appear to be working...
Ah well. One 80 GB SATA drive, and a non identifiable IDE drive.
Well, thank you anyway. Documentation must be wrong.
TrevorH
smartctl -a /dev/sdX will tell you lots too
OneM_Industries
Currently doing the first ever S.M.A.R.T check on this machine.
Any good SMART status reporting repos that will list the full SMART data?
bdonnahue
hello. i have tried to install centos 7 on xenserver 6.5 using multiple copies of every iso from multiple mirrors
all the installs fail
well... that is... they all succeed but on reboot they enter security mode
im sorry they all enter emergency mode
the os always fails to mount boot
im installing the minimal os
OneM_Industries
#1 thing. Have you googled centos 7.0 emergency mode?
DiscordianUK
yum install smartctl
OneM_Industries
Thank you!
bdonnahue
i have been googling but i cannot find a solution
OneM_Industries
No package smartctl available.
Bother.
Bahhumbug
OneM_Industries: smartmontools
DiscordianUK
Apologies
OneM_Industries
No big issue.
So..how do I use this?
Bahhumbug
man smartctl
OneM_Industries
Thank you!
-bash: man: command not found
Bahhumbug
And the useless minimal strikes yet again.
yum install man
